AN User Names & Dead Cats

Curiosity killed the cat (at least that's what I want the SPCA to believe). I'm interested to know about people's "user names". To make everyone a potential contributor to this funapalooza, a have create some neat little categories, fit into one of which your user name will...

Users like "gigglingone," "Apricot," and "alien," I'm wondering: Is there a story behind why that user name especially suits you or why you chose it? What's the story...?

Users like "Pickin' Machine," "Dirtbag Pride," and "walkoffbunt," I'm wondering: Why did you gravitate towards that name or theme?

Users like "kotsayiscool" and "R Langford," I'm wondering: What is it about that player that inspired you to want to use their name in your user name?

Users like "andeux," "Hollywood Oz," "Zonis," and "foolshgame22," I'm wondering: What's the reason for the choice of that particular name?

Users like "Sharon," Jennifer," "ohad," "Melody," etc., I'm wondering: If you were to come up with a user name that wasn't your first name, what might you choose?

Users whose user names don't fall neatly into any the above categories, I'm wondering: What can you tell us about your user name, or something referred to in your user name, that we might not know just from reading the name?

And now, without further ado...let the funapalooza begin...

Even though I wasn't singled out
I'll still answer.

I picked mine to further fuel rumors that I am Huston Street, of course. ;)

No, really. I couldn't come up with a username so I picked this one because Crosby won last year and I was pretty hopeful Street or another A might win this year.

I also figured I would be a rookie to AN and I'm young so I thought I'd be a rookie by age (turns out there are people a lot younger than me, though!)

by rookieoftheyear on Jul 24, 2005 9:54 PM PDT reply actions

Also
I wanted AN to be a site where I could be pretty much anonymous, so I used a name that had nothing to do with any of my "real" or usual screenames, just in case.

But isn't that apostrophe unnecessary? It's not possessive, so shouldn't it just be "one of the most brilliant ANers" instead of "ANer's"? That's akin to saying,"You're one of the best baseball player's." Which would be incorrect; it's supposed to be, "You're one of the best baseball players."

Name
I came up with the name, pretty much at random, back when I first started using the internet, and I needed an Alias for gaming, msg boards, and ICQ (for something other then just my ICQ#), so I picked the name Zonis. It turns out, that it is also the name of some German Professor, so I alternate between Zonis and the alt my friend suggested, Xonis.

So basicaly, been pretty steadily keeping the alias Zonis for 10 odd years, always comming back to it after a week if I ever try to change...

Though I've been gaming in Battlefield 1942 under Dr. Baron Von Evil Satan as of late.

My usual screenname is "angelhalo"
which I've had since 1998. I used to be really into Beanie Babies; the first site I've ever visited was www.ty.com, and I made an account there with a name based off of the angel Beanie Baby, named Halo. It just kind of stuck, I guess.

When I got on this website though, I realized that I couldn't run "angelhalo" as my screename because everyone would automatically assume I was an Angels fan. So I just went with my first name.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that "Foolishgame22" is named for Byrnes ;)

My screen name dates back to early AOL also. My mother had started us off on the service and had her first name followed by the first initial in her last name.

When I tried "LouisG", it didn't take. Some punk had it.

So, I went with "LouisMG". I just really liked how I would always get those Publisher's Clearing House mailers that said, "Louis M Gray, you may already have won 10 million dollars!" Had a nice ring to it.

So, from then on, "louismg" has been my Web handle almost everywhere - including AthleticsNation.com.

There's a loooooong story behind this name that involves a 1970's Colgate toothpaste commercial from another country, and some wordplay.

So I'll just explain the wordplay part.

Where I come from, "billy bucko" almost sounds like the colloquial expression "bilib ako" which translates to "I believe (in him or her)" or "I have faith (in this or that)."

The fact that part of my favorite GM's name is in there is icing on the cake.

Furious George
No my name isn't George, it's Colin actually.
The name is obviously (hopefully) a play on words for Curious George.
I got it from an episode of the Simpsons where Mr. Burns goes out of town to the Mayo Clinic for his annual checkup and allows the Simpson family to housesit for him while he is away.  Eventually Homer decides to have a party in international waters where it's legal to sell alcohol on Sunday and also where it's legal to have monkey knife fights.  Eventually Mr. Burns comes home and Homer tells him how he lost his yacht to pirates and then they show a bandaged monkey and Mr. Burns says "Furious George, what have they done to your beautiful face?  Smithers, this monkey is going to need most of your skin."

And that's my story.

Crosbino
So I decided to create a user name for this site, but neglected to give myself ample time to come up with something truly sharp/funny/memorable. In a heated moment, my mind wandered to Giambi's NY nickname: Giambino. I always liked that name, but thinking that naming myself after a disgraced former A might ruffle feathers, I chose a current A instead, and boldly compared him to Babe Ruth: hence, Crosbino.

I kinda like it. And since I came up with this name last season, I can honestly say that I and only I truly predicted the Ruthian season we are now experiencing from Mr. Crosby.

You're all welcome.

WhiteElephantGuy
is actually a reference to the White Elephant, obviously to show my love for them A's and their mascot.  But what happens is usually people think I'm a big white guy, which is weird seeing that I'm neither that big or Caucasion. Usually the banter is entertaining and I do very little in the ways of misleading once someone assumes my race.

I wanted to pick a symbol that would last forever with the A's, because if I had "Hudson and Mulder forever" or something like that, then I'd feel stupid that my name wouldn't represent the A's anymore.  Of course, now I just hope they dont' change their mascot.

Change is for the better. For both the A's and in life.

Nothinlikethetown
Its from an old Luniz song about Oakland called "It Aint Nothin' Like The Town."  It's been my screen name on everything for as long as I can remember.  It's weird, I feel like this is the 50th time I've explained this.  Everyone asks me what it means when they see it on the sleeve of my AN shirt.  I live in SF and I love wearing that thing around town, especiall considering the current state of the Giants.

You know what? A round cookie with a bite out of it looks like a C. A round doughnut with a bit out of it also looks like a C, but it is not as good as a cookie. Oh! And the moon sometimes looks like a C, but you can't eat that, so...

C is for cookie, that's good enough for me! Yeah!
C is for cookie, that's good enough for me!
C is for cookie, that's good enough for me!
Oh, cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C! Yeah!
Oh, cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C! Oh boy!

grape
Or "thegrape" and I can't really tell you why.

It involves a boy(not Danny Putnam) and it was such a cute moment it still puts a smile on my face.

I used "zonk" when I first began posting on AN. It's in reference to Larry Csonka, running back for the Miami Dolphins in the 70's. I'm not old enough to have seen him play, but I've always liked the sound of the name. It was my email address for ages. And I'm pretty sure I'll give the name to a future pet.

I morphed into "Sharon" when I realized that people were mistaking me for a guy. It also feels more comfortable to use my real name.

1st President of Czechoslovakia
Thomas Garrigue Masaryk

Czechoslovak political leader and philosopher, first president and chief founder of Czechoslovakia . He is revered by most Czechs and was internationally recognized as a great democratic leader.     Born in Moravia, Masaryk received (1876) his doctorate from the Univ. of Vienna and married an American, Charlotte Garrigue*.

*He took his wifes last name as his middle name

He was elected (1891) to the Austrian parliament and the Bohemian diet.  In 1893, he turned away from parliamentary activity to devote himself to the political education of his people. Disciples had gathered around him, and they launched (1900) the Czech Peoples party (later the Progressive party), based on Masaryk's ideas. Known as the Realist party, it emphasized the economic and social foundations of political power and strove for Czech equality, suffrage, and autonomy; the protection of minorities; and the unity of Czechs and Slovaks.

In 1907, Masaryk was reelected to parliament. He did not openly advocate independence at this point, but favored the transformation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire into a federation of self-governing nationalities. He also called for an end to anti-Semitism and opposed (1908) Austria-Hungary's annexation of Bosnia-Hercegovina.

At the outbreak of World War I, Masaryk fled abroad and, with Eduard Beneš , formed the Czechoslovak national council, which in 1918 was recognized by the Allies as the de facto government of Czechoslovakia. Traveling widely during the war years, Masaryk raised funds in the United States for the Czech cause, and in Russia he organized (1917-18) the Czech Legion , an independent Czech army composed largely of former prisoners of war.

Upon the collapse of Austria-Hungary at the end of World War I, Masaryk became (1918) the first president of the Czechoslovak republic. He was reelected in 1920, 1927, and 1934.

He died in 1937 just before the Germans invaded in 1938-39.

So, my screen name is a nod to him and his legacy.

Apricot
I used to live with a pug a long time ago. Some pugs are classified as having apricot fur. As a joke, I gave the pug a dignified alter-ago, and called him Apricot. It sort of suited me too since I'm Asian.

Back when I played Unreal, I picked Apricot as a screen name because I thought all the macho names like Killa and MurderMachine sounded so pathetic. (My favorite anti-tough-guy name I saw was PoopyHeadDoodyFace.)

Over time it has amused me that people often assumed I was a female because who else would pick such a fruity name. I don't mind the ambiguity and I figure lots of women deal with this all the time since the default sex is male, so I've stuck with it.

It all started in Petaluma, CA
In 1968 when the A's moved here from Kansas City I was 5 1/2 and this was a big deal in my family.

My parents had moved from Kansas City to California 10 years earlier in 1958.

My mom had grown up a huge baseball fan and she followed the Cardinals on the radio as did everyone in that part of the midwest. Her father had been a minor league umpire at one time. Mom had real baseball cred. The A's made Kansas City feel like a big league town and she immediately became a fan.

Back in 1968 Dad was just a typical sports fan, with a twist. He had long hair in a ponytail, wore a peace symbol around his neck and listended to Dylan.

The A's coming to the Bay Area was exciting for my folks since they had followed the A's when they played in K.C.  and the Giants were just to "establishment for them".

My mom and dad moved to Concord, CA in 1972 and I have been there ever since.

I live in Concord and have been an A's fan since 1968.

Hence the name: ConcordFanSince1968

2nd favorite team: WHOEVER IS PLAYING THE GIANTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pickinmachine
This is from Ron Washington and Moneyball, the chapter about Scott Hatteberg. When I read Moneyball I didnt know anything about Ron Washington, and what a great coach and character he is. Basically the story goes that Wash had 6 weeks to convert Hatteberg from a catcher to 1B. He had his work cut out, but he didnt give up and had confidence in Hatteberg and that confidence rubbed off on Scotty.
Wash was helping him to fool himself, to make him feel better than he was, until he actually became better than he was. At the Coliseum it was a long way from the A's dugout to first base, but every time Hatty picked a throw out of the dirt-a play most firstbasemen made with their eyes closed-he'd hear Wash from the dugout:

"Pickin' Machine!"

He'd look over and see Wash with his fightin face on:

"Pickin' Machine!

Moneyball

I became such a big fan of Wash after reading Moneyball. I found myself saying Pickin'Machine! all the time after ANY player made a dig. It just made me crack up. I picked this because I knew that AN was full of smart, fun people and have also read Moneyball so I figured they would get it.

But alas....
It's in honor of Ron Washington and not the "pickin' machine" himself!

Who knew???

andeux
On the old version of AN I posted as Andy, which is my first name, but when Blez introduced the new version and we had to register I decided I wanted something a little more distinctive. Andeux was a name given to me by a bartender running a tab for me at my local pub (3rock). For a while there were several regulars there named Andy, and he needed a way to keep them straight in the computer, and since I was the second one I became "andeux." As someone recently pointed out in another thread, it's also disturbingly close to the way they (mis)pronounce "andouille" in one of the round table pizza ads aired incessantly during games, but that's just an unfortunate coincidence.
In high school, a lot of people called me Lew (short for my last name), and I used to use that as a handle online sometimes, but no one has really called me that in years.

FireballerHARDEN
regretable choice of user name here.

I didn't put too much thought into it, I first signed on mid-to-late 2004 season...right about the time King Rich started ripping lineups apart, limb from limb. He throws hard.

I actually just e-mailed Blez about changing it, then the next time I log on, I see this diary waiting for me! If I change it, it will be something that is more personal than "uhhhh -Rich Harden is on the A's....duuuh....has good fastball."

The first time...
I saw Street pitch (on TV, no less) back in April or so, I said, "Who is that guy? He's amazing! The best I've seen in a long time...I wonder if anyone's noticed him yet?" Pretentiously, I thought I had "discovered" him. Well duh, most everybody had :)

I have to admit it was his skillz that made me a fan, not his BOYish good looks...

I chose my name to use first at the A's official site, and then found AN when browsing around one night, and kept it... yay!

Three days into the season I had him on my fantasy team. Everyone made fun of me for picking up a guy just because he was hot. [Maybe they didn't watch him when he was pitching, because he's diiiiirty.] Little did they know, they'd regret not getting him when they had the chance! HAH!

I picked mine because
the first baseball "game" I ever watched was the earthquake game in the 89 Series.  I have been an A's fan ever since.  I usually use the name gatling, in honor of my all-time favorite NBA journeyman Chris Gatling.  I don't know why I didn't use it here......

by gatling on Jul 25, 2005 12:23 AM PDT reply actions

Chris Gatling
used to be dating my mom's assistant's daughter.  As a result, an autographed poster of him made its way into our house.

So was the first game you watched the one that was cancelled before it began?

Sure was, I was 10.
Without a major league team in Indiana to follow, I just identified with the first team I ever really saw.  I don't remember if my dad turned on the game because of the earthquake or to way the game.  Became a huge McGwire fan starting the following season, my cousin was a Canseco fan.  Started out with the glory days, and lived through the lean 1990's.

i'm a nerd...
i didn't really think about my name, because when I first registered for AN I didn't know if I'd be posting a lot, and I just wanted to register quickly. And honestly, I've been thinking about changing it to something more A's related. We'll see.

Sabriel is a name I first started using about 6 years ago or so when I was obsessed with Star Wars, and I used in on the Star Wars discussion group I was a part of. The name is actually from a book of the same title - it's a good (read: quality) fantasy book that I'm sure most of you haven't read, or even heard of. Sabriel's the main character, and she's basically this awesome girl who fights the bad guys (simplified version ;-) haha), and I wouldn't necessarily say I'm like her, but I always liked her character.

Oh, and for the LJ-ers out there, I've found a couple of you on the athleticsfans comm, and I was going to friend you, but 1) I thought that might be kind of weird, and 2) I'm kind of going for the anonymity thing... But seriously, I'd be so easy to find if you looked. hahaha

Kylianna is my name on the MLB.com boards, so I just shortened it when I hopped over here, and since 'Kyli' sounds kinda close to my real name, I figured that it would be fine. I tried to think of something A's related, but I just wasn't creative. Kylianna's a name I've used a lot in gaming over the past six years, so I'm just used to responding to it and to Kyli.

In a perfect world, everyone would know Wesley
I like this thread, hope I don't dampen the lighthearted atmosphere too much with the following explanation/tribute:

"Cut The Mullet" is possibly the most popular song (tossup between that and "Rock N Roll McDonald's") written by Wesley Willis, the now deceased homeless schizophrenic Chicago street artist who wrote some of the funniest songs that will ever be written (just ask Jello Biafra if you happen to run into him in the Bay area).  Died of leukemia in August 2003; if it wasn't 2 days before I started college, I would've made a pilgrimage to Chicago to pay my respects.  When I heard the news that fateful Saturday (via a post in a fantasy football league where the password was "Wesley" and several of the team names referred to his lyrics or a song title), I cried as though I'd lost a family member.  The memory of Wes engaging me in his trademark headbutt and at his March '03 concert in Buffalo was a good one, but it offered little consolation.  I put on the autographed Wesley Willis trucker hat I'd purchased at the concert, and I don't think it's left my head since.  It's revered as sacred by the longtime friends who "discovered" Wesley during sophomore year of high school, and it consistently arouses the interest of acquaintances unfamiliar with Wes.  I'd write more, but it's almost 5:30 AM here, so I'm going to call it quits for the night, but I hope that what I've already written will be sufficient to impress upon you the significance of what may have seemed to be just an amusing handle.  Just remember that the mullet is the reason why people hate you.

Devina
My sn has always been Devina1212 ever since my family 1st got aol in '96.  12 is my lucky number because I was born on 12/12 at 7:12.  When I signed up for AN, I tried just Devina to see if there maybe was another Devina A's fan out there... I know its not that common of a name, but you never know.  I was excited that I could use my name without having to add numbers :)

If I could do it over, I'd probably pick a more A's related name.  I've always been an A's fan since I was a kid, but when I started to really become obsessed with A's baseball and never miss a game was in 2000. My fav player was Zito.  He was the 1st jersey I ever bought too.  So if I could do it again, I'd go with the name ZitoIsNeato :)

If I had to pick a screen name to represent right now, I'd go with KotsayIsAStud because Kotsay is stud in everyway (I even named my fish Stud after Kotsay... I also named one Swishy for Swisher, but that fish has gone to fish heaven) or HotHarden because Harden is hot in everyway.

by Devina on Jul 25, 2005 2:37 AM PDT reply actions

The great thing
about naming a fish Stud after Kotsay is that when Kots goes into a slump you can always tell people, "I named him Stud after Crosby" one day and "I named him Stud after Witasick" the next day.

I'm sorry to hear about Swishy, who probably became Flushy.

RickeySteals
I wanted it to be RickeySteals! but punctuation isn't allowed (for screen names).

My A's fandom was born in the late 80's. I was absolutely crushed after the '88 series - I even tore up all of my baseball cards from that team that shall remain nameless. 1989 was amazing, earthquake and all and somehow in my ten year old brain, I decided that Rickey was the biggest reason why we had won and that he was my favorite player. Rickey was one of the best to ever play the game. Rickey had the most rounded game, Ricky could steal, Rickey could get on base and Rickey even had some power.

If I was going to be a baseball player, I wanted to be like Rickey (without some of the crazy, Rickey had a bit too much crazy even for my young taste).

I think he'll forever be my favorite player.  These days, the fact that Rickey blows the unintentional comedy scale out whenever Rickey refers to himself in the third person, along with the fact that Rickey is still going after all these years only cements Rickey's status in my mind.

Although, in my case, and for reasons beyond my recall, SOT stands for son of "Thumper", not Thunder. And once I created one blog identity, sheer ennui prevented me from creating another for any other site, no matter how arbitrary and innappropriate it seems.

Almost Reggie
The explanation is in my profile, but who reads that anyway? I was born in Oakland in the fall of 1969 with Reggie Jackson in his sophomore season hitting a career high 47 HR. My parents apparently toyed with the idea of naming me Reggie. And while Reggie isn't one of the more popular male names among Asians, I got one even less common: Todd, which makes me sound like the QB of a high school football team in Kansas.

Anyway, not to be confused with 'Reggie' or 'Reg', I am just the 'Reggie that coulda been'.

The short answer: I'm an A's fan in Oklahoma (though I grew up in Berkeley).

The longer answer: over at dKos I started posting about a year and a half ago as "GreenSooner" (a name that reflects my party and my state).  Now I'm registered under that nom de keyboard at a variety of politically oriented blogs. When I recently registered here, it just seemed natural to add the A's other color to it.

(On an unrelated note: my brother is distinguished AN poster Nick, and I spent many days back in the eighties hanging out with him and Nico in the old, pre-Mt. Davis bleachers.  At any rate, both of them have infinitely more to add to this blog than I do. Keep up the great work!)

No, I never worked at a McDonalds.

The first website I ever posted on was a crassly humorous movie review site. I just read at first, but when I finally wanted to post something, I came up with what I thought would be a quick throw away name. I took the "Mc" from my real last name and "food" which was part of my password at work. I thought it was kind of funny by making an almost generic reference even more generic. New posters were sometimes treated somewhat harshly on that site, and I thought it was an easy name to make fun of. So, if people gave me hard time, I would give them an easy target and see if they stooped to just taking potshots at my screen name. Also, I used to never eat at McDonalds, but since I've had kids...well, sometimes the power of the dark side is strong.

Ragnar?k
My online screenname for just about everything since 1997.  I wanted a name without qualifying letters or numbers at the end, so it had to be obscure enough to be available on most forums.  Also, I am of (distant) Norse descent, so Ragnarok seemed to fit well enough (though it works better for fantasy gaming).

Ragnarok ("Doom of the Gods"), also called Gotterdammerung, means the end of the cosmos in Norse mythology. It will be preceded by Fimbulvetr, the winter of winters. Three such winters will follow each other with no summers in between. Conflicts and feuds will break out, even between families, and all morality will disappear. This is the beginning of the end.

The wolf Skoll will finally devour the sun, and his brother Hati will eat the moon, plunging the earth [into] darkness. The stars will vanish from the sky. The cock Fjalar will crow to the giants and the golden cock Gullinkambi will crow to the gods. A third cock will raise the dead.

...

After the destruction, a new and idyllic world will arise from the sea and will be filled with abundant supplies. Some of the gods will survive, others will be reborn. Wickedness and misery will no longer exist and gods and men will live happily together. The descendants of Lif and Lifthrasir will inhabit this earth.

More info here.

I seem to love all things Miguel.  He helped win a game in 1998 and he was being interviewed post-game on the radio and it was the first time I heard him speak.  I couldn't understand one thing he had to say, but his voice was so happy, and so rapid, I was dying laughing in the car on the way home.

99 is my high school graduate year. I'm a sucker for the past...

Also coincides with when I started following the A's closer than before. Bandwagon jumper, kinda (although I rooted for them ever since I arrived in the US in 89).

You can break it into 3 parts.
  1. John - it's my first name.
  2. The #10. My last name is 'ten Bosch' so 10 is short for my last name (and, coincidentally the number of my all time favorite athlete, Manute Bol)
  3. What's with the 'go'? I like to root for myself!

Ruben Sierra
I've always liked being contrary.  The biggest example of this:  when I went to UCLA, I continued to insist that the Cal Bears were my favorite team growing up and would continue to be my favorite team, and I bought a Cal jacket and wore it all over campus at UCLA.  (In retrospect, I think I would have enjoyed college more if I'd just bit the bullet and proclaimed myself a Bruin--now it's my alma mater but I can't claim to be a truly loyal Bruins' fan.)

As a contrary fan, I tend to gravitate toward players who are underachievers.  It's a way I can support my favorite team while still being contrary.  Usually the underachiever doesn't have so many ardent supporters, and I can feel unique and contrary by being the underachiever's only supporter.  So when everybody else is calling someone "the village idiot," I stay in the VI's corner, defending him against all charges.

As for the spelling--in high school (1994, 1995) my friends and I liked to get the "kids under 12" price at the gate by claiming to be under 12--we were 16 at the time.  To aid our efforts, my friend made us these phony ID's that made us YOUNGER than we really were.  They were ridiculous--student ID's claiming that we were from Compton High School--for the Hearing Impaired.  My friend who made them spelled "sophomore" wrong, and his fake name was Babe Ruth, and mine was Rubin Sierra.

"Every time he opens his mouth he makes a fool of himself," La Russa said. "He's a village idiot."

Mike Heath......
I am 37 and loved his play.  I was a catcher in little league and in High School ball.

I loved his play and the team back then.

Billy Ball...........

My dad was a ...gulp...."Giants" season ticket up till the end of the 62' season.  When Mcovey's line drive didn't fall in he said it was over for them.

My family moved to Florida for three years then after Disney World Opened we moved back to the Bay Area.  Burlingame in fact right smack in the heart of Giants territory.

My Dad fell in Love with the 72 A's.  We didn't have much money at the time but, he would take me to games and sit in the bleachers.  I don't remember much of those early games only that I loved the time I had with my Dad.  He was always working hard sometimes two jobs so whatever time I had with him was great.

When I graduated High School I bought my own Season tickets to the A's.  I got to see the the great teams of the late 80's early 90's.  Taking my dad to many games including the World Series.

My dad is older now so he only goes to one or two games a year.  I live in Rocklin,Ca now.  But, I make it a point to take each one of my four kids to a game alone every year to share the experience I had has a child.

My greatest moment at a game was at the playoff game agains't Boston with my oldest daughter and the walk off bunt.  We both didn't want to leave our seats and go home.

I'm originally from Huntsville, Alabama. The Huntsville Stars were the Double-A affiliate of the A's from 1985-98. The local newspaper, The Huntsville Times, would stick the phrase "former Huntsville Star" in front of the names of former Stars who were then in the majors (mostly A's then, mostly Brewers now). For example:

"Former Huntsville Star Eric Chavez hit two home runs Tuesday night..." or "Former Huntsville Star Miguel Tejada won the MVP Award..."

I moved to North Carolina six years ago, so in a way, I'm a former Huntsville Star too. :)

(Background: 3 members of my family worked extensively for Lockheed from the 70s (possibly the 60s) to the early 90s, and the mousepad was one my sister picked up while at work - some division of Lockheed that I know nothing about, but it was from the pre-Martin days...)

I used to be really into pro wrestling
Not just WWF or WCW, but also Puro and Joshi.  And I had a lot of the video games (because I thought being a video game nerd AND a pro wrestling nerd might cancel each other out and I'd be real cool).

In the pro wrestling video games, you can create your own characters.  So, me and my brother created a tag team called SweetJesusFunk.  It was SweetJesus and JesusFunk.  And that name has stuck as my handle.

Now, as to how we came to SJF.  That comes from the Family Guy episode where JEsus is at a dance party.  I believe it is the Stewie's First Birthday episode (which has that great line from Peter riding an elephant, "Hey Lois, look I'm the two smybols of the Republican party, an Elephant and a fat white guy afraid of change." ;)).  Anyway, Jesus says "Watch as I turn this water into FUNK!" and starts dancing.  We found that quite hilarious and somehow someway added that to the old phrase Sweet Jesus! to create SweetJesusFunk.

Yes, it's a long and mostly boring story with potshots taken at nerds, pro wrestling fans, and innocent Republicans.  And you'll never get those 2 minutes bakc ever again.  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

BTW, Misawa>Kawada.  ;)

I made it to the end of this thread!!!
Anyway, mine is simply my last name, which I am proud of because it is fairly unique.

Or at least, I was proud of it.

But then my dad started digging into the geneology of our family and it looks like we aren't really Vaillant's, but are actually Veneziano's.  There was some sort of name change by my great grandmother after her husband left.  She changed her name and her three children's names to Vaillant which is the name of a close "friend" of hers.  It's all shrouded in 100 years of mystery, though, so it's hard to say exactly what happened.

So, now I'm only a pseudo Vaillant and have lost what little French I thought I had.  I'm much more Italian and Maltese now.

Okay, that was a long story that maybe I only care about, but I figure if there was ever a thread to explain it, this is it.

Oh, one more thing.  My first name is pretty common and I have several friends with the same first name (not to mention a certain beer drinking ex-A's outfielder who is now in KC enjoying lots of BBQ) so we all go by our last names.  So, I suppose I'm used to being called by Vaillant anyway.

by Vaillant on Jul 26, 2005 1:20 PM PDT reply actions

It all began...
A few months ago while I was driving with my mom of all people to my aunt's house to have a barbecue for my cousin and this was during Harden's first home start against the LAA. So I'm driving and Byrnes hits a double in one of the earlier innings and I clench my fist in a positive way cause I know the A's had to score there and Korach says a hustle double for Byrnes and I said that does not sound right so I switched it around and got the name, the number comes from Byrnes and the book 'catch 22.'

Anyway, "Ty" is short for my all to common first name. My sisters got the inventive names, but surely I'm not bitter. I live just on the other side of the Sierra's, sho hopefully I'll make it down to the next AN day!
