Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Are Angels fans stupid or something?

In Tuesday's game, I was watching on TV in the bottom of the 6th.  Finley's up, no one on, A's up 1-0.  Harden has him in a 1-2 count, then throws a ball.  Now at at this point, without anything resembling a rally in the works, the crowd starts cheering.  And then Finley strikes out.

So let's recap.  Even count, two strikes on their own hitter, no one on base, and they spontaneously start cheering.

Now it might just be that something happened in the stands (maybe some of them beach ballers got particularly rambunctious), but I don't think so.  It wasn't a sudden cheer like when a player makes a webgem or a fan makes a grab grab on a foul ball.  And it wasn't a "let's-go-home-team" kind of cheer either, any real baseball fan should be able to recognize those in a heartbeat.  It was more a building crescendo, like they were actually expecting something to happen now that the count was 2-2 instead of 1-2.  And it ended up sounding basically like they were cheering for Harden to strike out Finley.

Methinks they need to start distributing "How to" manuals at Angel Stadium.

Hopefully they'll remind Angel "fans" to leave those stupid thunderstix at home.

PS What the F*$# is it with Socalers and those freaking beach balls?

I think I know...
Not sure which inning it occured, but a fan threw a paper airplane from the upper-view level along the first baseline (half-way between first base and the foul pole) and it sailed over the crowd, over home plate, made smooth right turn, and flew right into the hands of a bat boy at the entrance of the Angels dugout.  The crowd let out a huge roar at about the same time Harden was in his windup.

Then after that everyone started making paper airplanes out of the posters that were given away that night.

Angel fans are idiots, but the flight of that one paper airplane was amazing.

I was going to guess they flashed "MAKE SOME NOISE" on the stadium monitor or something.

by MrIncognito on Jul 21, 2005 7:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Well...
I was there too and they did flash the "make some noise" sign at odd moments in the game. I can't recall if they flashed it at this particular point or not, but they did get overly excited for the airplanes. (If you had seen the faces on that poster you would have wanted to throw it away too. Simply frightening)

correct
This is correct. The plane was very cool. Paper airplanes definitely garnered more cheers than anything else that went on during that game. If it doesn't directly involve the Angels scoring a run, the fans there usually don't appreciate it.

Well...
if you look at the crowd, it's mostly hip, young women with Angels hats and their attractive boyfriends, thinking they're so cool because they're partaking in the sports world. Nothing against young women at baseball games (I'm one of them), but you know the type I'm talking about. The ones who chat on their cell phone most of the time, looking up occationally to wave at the camera. If they know any team members other than Guerrero, I'd be shocked. There is serious doubt as to whether 70% of the Angels fans know what is going on. I suppose going to an Angel's game is trendy in Anaheim, but only when the Angels are winning.

Yeah, I mean
who could they possibly be looking at...the Angels are definitely behind the A's in the sexiness standings:)

I cannot tolerate Anaheim Stadium
I live in L.A. and went to the A's - Angels game on April 24 (the A's lost 1-0) and vowed I would most likely never go again to Anaheim Stadium.  I purchased pretty good seats over the internet that cost me about twice their value.  Unfortunately, they were on the end of the row near an aisle that led to a nearby concession stand.  This meant that I had to get up out of my seat at least 30 times during the game, to allow people to go to and return from the concession stand.  In addition, two gentlemen sat in front of me who talked business the whole game.  They couldn't care less about the game and talked just loud enough to be a constant distraction.  Add to this the enormously high volume of the public address system and the jumbo tron displays, the tossing of tee shirts into the stands, the never ending promotions and replays of Angels highlights, and the constant beach balls being bounced about (how's that for alliteration)?  Thank God they did not have thudersticks that day.  A lot of Angels fans seem to be airheads who have no clue as to why they're even there.  I would much rather fly/drive up to Oakland and attend games at the Coliseum.

Watching A's/Angels games on TV is no better, if the Angels announcers are doing the game.  I swear that Steve Physiok and Rex Hudler must be on some kind of drugs.  They talk constantly about trivia, talk down to the listeners as if they are four year olds, and essentially do not really pay attention to the game itself.  During the series that just ended, I watched the first game on television with the sound down almost to nothing, and they listened to the final two games of the internet over KFRC.  With good radio announcers, you almost don't need television anyway to enjoy a baseball game.

watching the game last night my roommate and I also noticed that the crowd would cheer everytime an Angel hitter made contact...then they would die down when they realized it was another inning ending 4-6-3 DP

Couldn't be...
That would mean that the fans were actually watching the game, which just isn't possible. I was at the game the other night when Harden was pitching, the seventh had just ended and everyone starts leaving. It was 3-0 and still a fun game to watch. I thought it was ridiculous that so many people were leaving.

Hate it there.
I know that every stadium has its share of obnoxious fans, but this place is the worst.  This area barely supported their team before 2002, and you can tell...the fans, for the most part are bandwagon morons.  They are more interested with the fireworks that are shot off after the lineup is announced than they are with who is actually in the lineup.  More people know who the rally monkey is than Arte Moreno.  When I go to other ballparks, I like chatting it up with informed fans and discussing our respective teams...not here.  Below are some of my best things I've heard at OC Stadium over the past three years:
  • "The Bay is Gay..Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! Chant"
  • " The A's suck!"  My response, "We are in first place (this was last year, up by like 4 games)". Angel guy response, "No they aren't! They suck! YEEEAH! (followed by laughing and high fives with fellow Angel retard posse "
  • "The Angels won the World Series...you A's fans can talk when YOU win the World Series"
  • "I hate the A's players...they are so ugly"
  • "Zito? More like BURRITO! (Followed by farting sound)"
Also, they always like to fall back on the fact that they have a better stadium than us, and that Oakland is "so GHETTO bro!".  Shallow attempts to cut A's fans down, since they can't counter with any baseball related points.  I am not being biased here because they are a division rival, ANAHEIM FANS ARE THE WORST.

To be fair...
The absolute most knowledgeable baseball fan I know is an Angels fan.  He could name the World Series champion of all 100 World Series, and I expect he could probably name a fair share (if not all of) the MVPs in both leagues since then.  He's been hardcore since back when they were the California Angels and that I can respect, because it basically amounts to cheering for a team that was utterly irrelevant until 2002.

But yes the vast majority of them suck.

by dchu on Jul 21, 2005 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

They may not cheer in correct situations...
but atleast they show up to games, and have a nice ballpark. I'm a little sick of A's fans criticizing all things Angels. They get 35k a game, the A's get about 8,500 when there isn't a promotion. Not to mention they even sell monkeys with A's jerseys at the Coliseum. You don't hear any complaints about the A's ripping off the most anoying thing to hit baseball this century. Well besides maybe the wave, which supposidly has its origins in Oakland.

by KMoAsFan on Jul 21, 2005 2:24 PM PDT reply actions

Okay
The A's haven't gotten less than 10k once this year. THey average around 20k.

You can argue all you want about how Angels fan aren't that bad--personally I don't know any so I can't judge--but at least check the attendance figures before you bash A's fans.

According to ESPN it's:
Anaheim with 41,640 at 92.4% capacity.

And yet...
They didn't show up prior to 2002.  And they don't know what the hell they're talking about.  That makes them our baseball equals?  I'm sorry, but it just isn't the case.  I hate Red Sox fans, but I at least respect them for knowing what's up, both in regards to their team and baseball at large.  The vast majority of Angels fans know nothing and I have no respect for them.

by dchu on Jul 21, 2005 5:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Chill man.
When I said ABOUT 10k a game it was in reference to a day when there wasnt a promotion like i said in my first post. The team averages a total in the mid 20ks. But thats only because they draw a huge number fans when they play the Giants, Boston, and New York. But that doesnt change the fact that the A's have pathetic attendance. Look at the 4/2-4/4 series at Texas, a division rival.  10,144 10,427 15,654. That is sickening. Or howbout a game like Friday night July 1st against the CWS, with Harden pitching. 15,293, just sad. I could go on forever listing games drawing under 20k, but it's useless. I just find it sad that people can criticize Angels fans or people at their games when they are actually there buying tickets.

by KMoAsFan on Jul 21, 2005 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions

alright
Look, I'm not trying to say that the A's have great attendance--obviously I know thats not true. But to say that "get about 8500" is way understating it.

I guess my problem is that there is a misconception that the A's attendance is worse than it really is. The A's are a middle-of-the pack team attendance wise. Obviously, they should be higher considering that they are better than most teams--but I hate it when I'm watching A's highlights and they talk about how no one is there. Its like a joke to them, and I think its unfair

"He threw me a pitch I'd never seen before, Sexson said. The umpire asked me what it was, and I said, 'I don't know.' This guy throws ghost pitches.''

Fair enough.
I just get tired of hearing how bad other fans are when the A's have attendance/fan problems of their own. It's probabaly more to do with the Coliseum not being an attractive place to go for the people who aren't die hard fans, but it's a problem nonetheless, and I don't think we should be criticizing people who actually show up to games.

by KMoAsFan on Jul 21, 2005 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Do you live in SoCal???
Cause if you don't then you have no idea how irritating they are. If you do live down here then I can't possibly understand how you can stick up for them. The only reason they go to the games is because it is the "in thing" to do. You can't misinterpret being trendy with being a dedicated fan.

by DodgerLuv1 on Jul 21, 2005 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

No.
I live in Atlanta. I grew up going to A's games as my parents had season tickets when we lived in Fremont. Going to a game because it's the "thing to do" isn't unique to Anaheim. Thats exactly what the people in ATL do with the Braves, in fact they added a gigantic HD screen, digital banners, and all kinds of stuff to make the park visitor friendly for the people who come because it's the "thing to do." But their goal was to increase their fanbase getting the people who come for fun to get interested in baseball. I just find it so dumb people criticize Angels fans just because they are the A's rivals. There was a diary about certain A's fans only getting interested because they thought players were cute, thats the same type of thing people would criticize Angels fans for doing.

okay, but
"There was a diary about certain A's fans only getting interested because they thought players were cute, thats the same type of thing people would criticize Angels fans for doing."

I think that would be impossible. When I was at the game these two older ladies who were all decked out in their Angel gear spent the whole game talking about how hot Zito, Haren, Street, Chavez, and Crosby are. They may be new to the game but they clearly would not find one of their own players attractive in any way.

bandwagoners
I attended an A's-Angels game in Anaheim in mid-July of 2002 and the place wasn't even half-filled.  There were so many empty seats I could've bought a $12 upper-view level ticket and sat at field level.  I believe the attendance was around 25,000 -- and this was the year of their WS run.  All the bandwagoners started attending Angel games in mid-August of '02 when they started winning.  God I hate Angel "fans."
