Star-divide

And so it begins. The first game of the rest of the season.

But it is no ordinary game, and may, in fact, be the most important game of the season to date.

What Agent Force has discovered in LA is a complacent media and fan-base that does not fear what they should, the Oakland A's.

A media and fan-base that already has the Angels in the playoffs as runaway Western Division Champs as evidenced in an afternoon interview with Billy Beane earlier today:

Host: "Do you realy believe that you guys can catch the Angels and win the division???"

BB in a nutshell: "Yes"

Perhaps my application of text does not reflect the influction of doubtfulness in the hosts voice, but I can assure you with the changing of topics to Billy's love of USC, the concern of the A's catching the Angels complacently dissapeared.

Perhaps another sign of complacency was the Angels announcers continually knocking the A's the last 2 nights for being a "poor road team, while the Angels are one of the best". All the while failing to mention that on the A's last road-trip they swept the White Sox, who some revere as the best team in baseball.

So we are left with tonight, and the game itself.

A win by the Angels tonight will go just as expected in So-Cal. A more talented team taking 2 of 3 from their pesky No-Cal neighbors while they await the more worthy Yankees.

Therefore I proclaim this: We must win tonight.

A win tonight will have a huge affect on the standings. In my eyes, the difference between 8.5 and 6.5 games back is immense.

But digging even deeper, you can see behind the curtain. A series win for the A's tonight will create the slightest of cracks in the armor of the Angels and thier fans.

Even the slightest of cracks will allow the fear to seep in and eventually overwhelm them with doubt.

If the A's win tonight, by this time next week they will be in 1st place.

If the A's win tonight, the World will take notice.

clever diary ;-)
and i agree that tonight's a big game in terms of the angels' mentality. however, if we don't win, i don't think that means we can't still take the division. i personally think it's better if they're not afraid of us and we beat them out anyway. just... sticking with the underdog mentality ;-)

Nah...
I want them thinking, especially the guys who have been on the team a while.  "What the hell has to happen to put these guys away?"  They traded two of their best pictures and they are still closing on us.

yeah ;-)
i was just thinking, it would be nice to have them wake up in september with us in the lead and be like, 'holy shit, how did we lose it??'

but hey, as long as we win, i'm happy ;-) the angels will get their comeuppance

Not a chance...
6.5 games is a lot.  Angels will win some games on luck alone (See: bouncing hits off home plate).  20 games minimum A's go 15-5 Angels 8-12.  And, that is a very low probability occurence.

It just may be too much of a lead.  We need a pretty big implosion of the Angels to close that gap.  Of course it happened to the A's last year, so it could happen to the Angels this year.

More importantly get the win.  Have Texas beat the Skanks.  Then, we can pound on Texas through the weekend.  Let the Angels and Skanks beat on each other this weekend, and either gain a couple games on Anaheim or put two more teams behind us in the wild card.

unfortunately, texas is NOT cooperating
i turned it on a minute ago and it was 2-1 yanks, now it's 6-1 after two yankee home runs to the exact same spot in the rangers bullpen.

Dammit...
Oh well, I implied te Skanks would be one of the teams put behind us, but maybe Tampa Bay will help (Orioles).

i really want baltimore to win the AL East
and i know that makes it tough for us in the wild card race, but we can hope for implosions of the yanks and sox... ;-)

I don't get it
It's my gut feeling that any team playing teams in our division should be rooted for to win.  Does it not make sense for the teams in our division to put up losses?

Is rooting for Texas over NYY a "we're chasing the wild-card" mentality?

by eamb on Jul 20, 2005 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, cuz we are chasing the WC.
That's a fact...The division isnt over, but I like out WC chanes a ton more than the division.

I see
I have to disagree with that mentality though... Shoot for the gold, and if it becomes mathematically impossible & we'll lose the division - then I'll focus on the WC.

no question it is big
we know zito is for real and that he's a big game pitcher.  we know byrd is a fluke.
hopefully tonight's game proves this to the rest of the world.

fluke was probably the wrong word
but let's still hope he is one!

2 of 3
Is absolutely huge.
This series is the beginning of the season.
The confidence we'll get out of besting the division leaders will carry us through to the end.

I am as nervous as a high school junior going to the prom, hoping their date will drive up.
