AN Pre-occupation

Sabriel's AN confessional II brought out a lot of work/play issues, with people either leaving work to go to weekday games or sneaking in some AN time during business hours.  I am actually sometimes amazed at how much discussion there is during the day, and even though we are represented across different time zones it's clear there is a lot of creative use of daylight hours going on.  So I thought it would be interesting to see what occupations our members have, and how they manage to contribute so much to our favorite pre-occupation.

Poll
What are you supposed to be doing when you're actually on AN?
Future Billy Beane (I'm a student and what I'm doing on here is contributing to my greater edumacation).
24 votes
Molding young minds (I'd never go online in the classroom, but during office hours...).
6 votes
Not a desk driver (no computer access at work, the only time I log on is at home).
7 votes
I'm the boss so I can do what I want (including Firing Macha Now).
13 votes
I am the master of my own domain (self-employed, slacker, whatever - I can choose the time I spend on AN).
13 votes
Sticking it to the MAN (they may be counting keystrokes but Big Corp/Gov that I work for can't see that I'm picking up a paycheck for my time on AN).
27 votes
Stealing time is stealing money (I wouldn't dream of wasting work time on something frivolous, only go on AN off work).

But I just wanted to say that all companies/govt network admins can tell what sites every user visits, if they REALLY wanted to look into it.  The only time Ive ever had to do it is if people complain about someone looking at porn at work, youd be suprised how many people do it.

Being a student is fun
since being on campus means access to several HUGE big screen TVs to watch the game. If I can only get my hands on a laptop, I'll be able to AN and enjoy the blessed TVs of campus at the same time.

And personally, I'm more of a future Mychael Urban than Billy Beane!

Same here
I'm a student, but I just go to a JC, so I don't like calling myself a "college student", because I don't go to a university yet. One more year here in purgatory and I'm out. And I SO call Urban's job!

i want in on both Beane and Urban's jobs!
and Macha's too!

I'm an aspiring writer, filmmaker, and Major League Baseball Manager. Yeah for being a student and telling myself I can do whatever the hell I want! :-D

Working this season temporarily....though plan to go to Greece to save Sea Turtles soon...and maybe South America later...and India after that....I just want to get enough adventures in before I settle down.  Cuz man, working at a tech company sure makes life seem dull in the long run.  Though I plan to go to grad school eventually.   By the way, anyone with a hook up (employment, frequent flyer miles, toilet paper, anything)? I have to pay off student loans, haha

I work at a small Chiropractic
office in Danville. My immediate supervisor is online more than I am, so I m not to worried about being online. But when the Dr. comes out I have to minimize my screen so he doesn't see that I am online. Especially on AN, he's a Giants fan.

work in customer service...
I will be surfing AN while someone is blabbing to me about something...or I will surf between calls...it makes me wonder what the people are doing when I call a company...

Atleast I am not in India, like most customer service jobs.

How do you guys do it?
I have a full-time job with long hours.

I sleep at least 6 hours a night.

I spend at least 6 hours a day away from a computer.

I check AN several times a day during work and feel very guilty about it.

I have faith.

Basically
Running experiments in a biology lab means alot of waiting in between steps. I spend that time on AN, or other baseball-related sites. My boss knows about it and is cool with it since I do my job well when I'm actually doing stuff. Before, when I didn't have a computer at home, accessing AN was solely an on-the-job thing. However, my boss bought me a computer for home, so now I can surf AN at home too. I have the best job in the world. :)

by OaktownTribesman on Jul 20, 2005 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Sporadic
When I'm really busy I hardly spend any time on the site and don't post, but when there's a lull (like today) I can treat myself.  Its relatively rare, though, which is what spurred the question in the first place (that and the obvious guilt some expressed on ANCII).

I'm definitely not sticking it to the man when I log into AN, as I've never really had a "real" job my entire life.  Seeing as I'm a philosophy major at a mediocre state school, it is highly likely that I'll never have a real job at any point in the future, either.  At the moment, I play poker, referee soccer, and, coming soon, drive a Zamboni at an ice rink.  But one of these days I swear I'm going to get around to assembling the in-depth organizational assessment that I think could be impressive enough to convince the owners of either Philadelphia or Tampa Bay (Ed Wade and Chuck LaMar being targeted for their incompetence/presumed lack of job security) that I could be a front office prodigy...

Then I check AN. :)
