Favorite/Hated 3 teams

I am just curious what AN people's 3 favorite teams are (besides the A's) and what their least favorite 3 teams are.

This kind of poll is pretty standard in most Sports discussions, so it probably has been done before.  Just think of it as an update - maybe Hawk pissed you off enough to knock the Sox down to your most hated team?  Maybe the recent trouncing of the Angels by the M's has knocked Seattle to one of your favorites?  Well, lets see if people who are A's fans are also similarly fans of other teams.  So post your top 3 and least favorite 3 and a reason why (no matter how inane).  I'll get it started off:

Top 3:

  1. St.Louis (great baseball city, fan of Rolen, good team)
  2. Baltimore (Tejada, and takes on the Yanks and the BloSox every year.)
  3. Marlins (Dontrelle of Yay-yay area, small market team)
Low 3
  1. Angels (their clueless fans, rally monkey, bandwagon, the artificial lifestyle of the OC)
  2. Red Sox (their rude fans, inferiority complex to the Yanks, playoff series vs A's)
  3. Yankees (payroll, Giambi, constant coverage on all sports media, playoff series vs A's)

My...
3 Fav (excluding a's)-
  1. Toronto Blue Jays (born and raised)
  2. Cinncinati Reds (Eric Davis was a fav of mine)
  3. Chicago White Sox (frank thomas is one of my all time fav players.)
3 hated -
  1. Yankees (I need to explain?)
  2. Mets (for trying to be like the Yankees)
  3. Giants (well you know)
I hate any player thats got the initials NY on them!

Baltimore
I just dont seem to understand why theres sympathy or why people like Baltimore.  The only thing that seperates them from NY and Boston is that those two teams actually WIN.

They grossly overpay players and have as much a bloated team salary as any east coast team.  Its teams like the orioles that set the market for starting pitching by giving fat ponson 10 million a year.

by pickinmachine on Jul 9, 2005 11:08 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

According to USA Today...
... the Orioles payroll this year is $73.9 million. Last year it was $51.6 million, actually less than the A's.

Also, Ponson's latest contract was for three years and $$22.5 million. A mistake to be sure, but not all that ridiculous.

So go ahead, it's okay. Cheer for the Orioles.

With 12 votes,
3 votes each to the Angels, Giants, Yanks, and Red Sox for most hated team.  Definetely diverse hatred on AN.  Awesome.
Change is for the better. For both the A's and in life.

Mine
Although I can't really get excited about any team but the A's

Other teams I like

  1. St. Louis (lived there for six years)
  2. Twins (don't know why, just do)
  3. Orioles
Teams I hate

1)Giants
2)Red Sox (fans more annoying than any other team)
3)Rangers (all seem like a**holes)

As for the Yankess, I don't follow them, but I've never jumped on the hatewagon. They aren't as annoying as RS fans, they love their team---if they want to spend money, I don't care.

Favorite/Hated 3 teams
Top 3:
  1. Florida Marlins (D-train is making me like like a genius in fantasy baseball, so is Miguel Cabrera. Likeable players (atleast to me) like Delgado, Conine, Pierre, Lo Duca, etc.)
  2. Minnesota Twins (Pretty similiar small market team like the A's, Torii Hunter is a sick-ass player as well)
  3. Every team in the NL West exluding San Fransisco  (gotta love when those guys from SF lose)
Bottom 3:
  1. Yankees/Red Sox: Their payrolls, east coast bias, stupid selfish fans, playoff series against Oakland, etc. etc. etc.
  2. Angels: Fans are idiots (literally), thundersticks (do they still have those), rally monkey (what does a monkey have to do with Angels?), the name change ( The Los Angelos Angels of Orange County of Southern California of California of America of Anaheim.
  3. Teams that beat the A's: Basically almost every team they have played this year since they struggled alot in the beginning of the year ( Oh yeah except those MLB "best" white sox.)

  3. Any team playing the giants, angels, yankees, or Rangers
  4. Yankees
  5. Giants
  6. Angles (behind giants becuase we have to suffer through seeing them all the time on tv at the expense of the A's)

As pathetic as this sounds...
Fantasy baseball has made me more or less agnostic about teams, and I save my hate for whatever team deserves it (i.e., whichever one is playing the A's or ahead of us in the standings).

But from a Wishing The Organization Ill standpoint, my politics and my baseball let me hate on the Rangers and Brewers without any issues. With Monaghan no longer owning the Tigers, Huzienga out on the Marlins, and Murdoch done with the Dodgers, the hate is getting more concentrated.

Top 3:
  1. Toronto - The only Canadian team left.
  2. Boston - We both hate the Yankees.
  3. Dodgers - Always liked them and then they went and hired DePo.
Bottom 3:
  1. Yankees - As a fan of the Athletics you gotta hate them and their huge payroll.
  2. Giants - Has more to do with Bonds then with the rivalry.
  3. Baltimore - No other team came to mind.

3 Up, 3 down...
Top 3 (besides A's):
  1.  Los Angeles Dodgers (dad grew up a Dodgers fan in LA, so I inherited a little of that).
  2.  St. Louis Cardinals (ever since Mark McGwire went there I've followed them)
  3.  San Diego Padres (I've always liked teams from SD.  My sis now goes to school down there, so I get to spend more time there.  I dunno, just like em).
Bottom 3:
  1.  Anaheim Angels (Their "fans," their inflated payroll as of 2002, their OCness...god, I really really hate teh Angels)
  2.  New York Yankees (I hate teams who try to buy championships.  They are usually number one, but I'm not as annoyed by their fans as I am the Angels)
  3.  San Francisco Giants (well, I grew up a Dodgers fan on the side, so I have to hate them.  And they also get more love than the A's even though we play much better, which is stupid)

Basically
  1. Atlanta Braves (Loved seeing Chipper, Mcgriff, Glavine, and Klesko as a young one)
  2. Twins (Good pitching and has a solid baseball team for years to come)
  3. Houston Astros (Awesome solid core of young players with Ensberg, Lidge and Oswalt along with Berkman)
Bottom 3
  1. Red Sox (Need I say more?)
  2. Giants (Their fans are quiet and don't know what they are talking about)
  3. Yankees (A-Rod, Sheffield, and maybe their overloaded paying)

First off
HOW CAN YOU PUT THE GIANTS??????
ok
3 Fav,
Marlins (I am cuban, all mt extended family lives there)
Red Sox (This is hard because I was tired of their whining, but my brother and sister were born there, I have family ties.)
Braves (I am a pitcher, growing up how could I not love Maddox, Smoltz and Glavine, also Avery had some good years)

3 hated
This is all a tie
Giants (their fans)
Yankees (I actually liked them when they started  to win again.  The team was young guys mixed with good vets.  There was no super star, just a bunch of good ballplayers.  But now they try to buy World Series.)
Angels (Once again fans.  Their announcers make me want to commit murder also,)

Answer
I grew up in a family that was fairly evenly split between A's/Giants fans.  My Mom, Grandpa and aunt were A's fans.  My brother, uncle, closest cousin and aunt were Giants fans.  So because of that growing up I spent my time seeing games in both parks.  I've always felt it was okay to like one NL and one AL team and those were the teams I grew up following so I've stuck with them.  When they play each other I root for the A's 100% because they're my first love but when they're not playing each other I root for both.  I know most people here at Bonds fans but he's been one of my favorite all time players and he attended the same university I attend.  Hope that explains how I can like a team from the "evil side of the bay."

  3.  UCLA softball team
3 most hated
  1.  Angels (the loathesomeness of the Angels and their newfound "fans" has been much discussed on AN, so no need to explain; also, the Pearly Gates blog)

Fave/most hated
My favorite teams list begins and ends with the A's. I wouldn't call any other teams my "favorite" teams. I do have sympathy though for a handful of small, usually crappy at the moment teams. This year that would include the Pirates and the Royals. Though small and crappy are by no means the only criteria, since I hate the Brewers (Bud Selig connection), as well as the D-Rays (arguably the most ill-advised pro sports expansion of all time).

My top three hated teams:

  1. Red Sox (I live in Boston)
  2. Angels
  3. Giants
This list however does change alot. Back when the Yankees were actually good they were higher up, and when the Angels were pathetic I actually had some sympathy for them.

Fav and hated
MY three top teams:
  1. The oakland A's.
  2. The oakland Athletics
  3. The Athletics of Oakland of Alameda county.
Ok, seriously, I just can't get excited about other teams aside from the A's.  I did, for awhile, want the Expos to do well because maybe, just maybe, they would go so deep into the postseason that Selig could not screw the wonderful city of montreal out of their team.  But beyond that, while I do care for a few players (local guys like Willis, Lee, Dye and others and former A's favs like Tejada), I have never ever caried for another team in any way.

top three hated teams:
1:Yankees.  They act like the world owes it to them to just bow before them.  I hate them.  I hate the fact that they have a lot of fans who just like the team because it is trendy.  They suck in the most metaphysical way and it makes me happy when they suck in the most actual way.

  1. Giants.  IT bothers me to know end that the A's are the stepchild to the giants in local bay area media.  The A's have had much more sucess in the bay area and yet the Giants are the darlings.  0 SPLASH HITS AND 4 WORLD TITLES!!!!  YEAH!!!!
  2. Angels.  Sciocia is an ass but more importantly, was there such a thing as an Angels fan before 2002?  If you ever see somebody in one of their hats ask them who Bo Belinsky, or even Bobby Grinch was and watch them gloss over like a kid who has been on one too many rides at disney land.  Ask them about their favorite player as a kid and they will name a dodger.  I hate the angels....

  2. The Twins, fellow small market overachievers.
  3. The Blue Jays

Three I won't cross the street to see.

Another Take
Top three:
  1. Eugene Emeralds (My local team, single-A affiliate for the Padres)
  2. Cardinals (Wife grew up in St. Louis, plus there's the whole A's pipeline thing)
  3. Nationals (I'm from from D.C. originally, plus it's nice to see them doing well after getting the shaft from MLB, and I'm sort of rooting for Guillen to get his life on track)
Bottom three:
  1. Giants (Knee injury or attempt to duck steroid rumors?  Too much undeserved ink in the Bay Area press)
  2. Rangers (Siddown Showalter!  Oh wait, Francisco just threw your chair into the stands...)
  3. Brewers, D-Rays, and any other team whose ownership is putting less in player salaries on the field than they're taking in for revenue sharing-- shame on you!

My three
On the up side:
  1.  Minnesota.  Outside of Oakland, I think they're the best-run team in baseball.  Plus, their fans were incredibly nice to me when I caught an ALDS game there in 2002.
  2.  Baltimore.  Good baseball town.  They have Miggy.
  3.  St. Louis.  Unbelievable baseball town.  They donated several players to us :-).  Thanks, Walt!
On the down side:
  1.  New York Yankees.  They have A-Rod.  Their constant overspending is ruining baseball.  Their fans don't know how to be respectful when they visit the coliseum.
  2.  Boston Yankees Jr.  See sentences two and three above.
  3.  What Would You Like Us To Call Ourselves? Angels.  Bandwagon fans.  Hated rivals.

0. oakland.
1/2. the rivercats, the rockhounds, the cougars, the ports, the canadians, and the azl athletics.
  1. montreal, as a pity pick. i went to olympic stadium once. it was pretty awesome. i don't like washington.
  2. kansas city, as a nod to the damons and dyes they gave us a couple years ago. i don't know how anyone can root for that team.
17/6. ... the west tenn diamond jaxx, if not only for their name.
3. san diego. i lived there at some point.

bottom three:
1a. new york yankees. they have the yes network, then they have 1/2 of espn. and their fans are fake.
1b. boston red sox. they have nesn, then they have 1/2 of espn. and their fans are fake.
3/2. the los angeles, los angeles county angels of anaheim, orange county. dumb name aside, they play in our division, their fans suck, their fans suck,  their fans suck, and they introduced baseball to thunderstix.
7/4. sf giants. they suck, i hate their fans, i'm fed up with the attention they get, i hate their lame territorial rights argument, and all my "friends" claim to like them.
2. milwaukee brewers. they're run by the commish, for one, and they always complain about how small market teams can't win. screw them.
13/6. seattle mariners. bat-flippin' boone aside, i just hate this team. i think it's because they're in our division.
7/3a. texas rangers. they're in our division. that and that bandbox of a stadium is almost as bad as colorado&houston.
7/3b. colorado rockies. they suck, and don't know how to adapt to the environment they play in. STOP WITH THE SLUGGERS, GET LD HITTERS. that and their stadium is a joke, but i suppose it has something to do with the environment.
7/3c. houston astros. what is up with that stadium? it's as bad as texas&colorado.
5/2. tampa bay devil rays. they've been a joke of a team ever since their inception. they still are a joke of a team.
41/16. los angeles dodgers. their fans leave early. it seems as if they don't care. maybe they don't care... who knows? then they whine when they don't win, but it seems as if they don't care.
11/4a. cleveland indians. indians... that logo. disgusting.
11/4b. atlanta braves. the tomahawk chop. disgusting. and they have tbs.
47/16a. chicago cubs. stop complaining about curses. please. thank you. oh, and wgn.
47/16b. new york mets. do they even have fans? they sign players who fail. don't know how to run a team?
3. washington nationals. they don't belong there! move 'em back to montreal!

2).  TB D-Rays - I love Lou, he's so much fun to watch
3).  Mil Brewers - again why not? They smacked the Yankees too.

Not ok with..
1).  LA Dodgers - Father and brother big Dodger fans...Game 1 of 88 series need I say more?
2). Big market east coast teams (you know who) - I am sick of hearing about them on ESPN
3).  Cubs - the most overrated team in baseball. As of today the A's are 2 games better yet are given no shot at the playoffs, yet the Cubs do?

My teams
  1. Mariners (It's not really the team, but there are a couple guys I like to root for)
  2. Cardinals (Don't know why...just think they're cool)
  3. ....hard one. I guess I'll say Rockies because I live close by and watch a couple games a season.
Not so very long ago, the Yankees would have been on that list - I grew up watching their AAA team, and so it was a natural and logical progression to root for them. However, in the past season, I've noticed a nasty trend in their playing - like a bunch of superstars playing for personal stats. There are still a few players I root for, but the team...I don't really care.

Bottom three:

  1. Red Sox (I think them and their fans are all classless losers. 'nuff said)
  2. Angels (Get OVER the name, people)
  3. Blue Jays/Texas (The Rangers have attitude problems, and the Blue Jays just plain bug me.)

2.) Twins (Fellow smart market brethren; used to hate them, but that was before Pierzynski went to the Gnats)

2-4 and 28-30
I once actually did list all 30 teams in order of preference to now 10-year-old brother, who proceeded to repeat them all back to me in characteristic savant-esque fashion

2-4: Cleveland, Toronto, LA/FLA tied for third behind the A's (should probably put KC in there too so that Tornado Alley could be represented along with the San Andreas Fault and hurricane territory...but KC has nothing going for it aside from its claim to a type of natural disaster, while LA has DePodesta and once had Mondesi, one of my favorite players while he was in his prime, and FLA has 3 of the most exciting pitchers in the game).  Nationals a close 5th.

28-30: NYY, NYM, Tampa Bay out of intolerance for incompetence

my top 3 list
Favorite Teams (other than the A's of course)
1. Dodgers- I went to school in Irvine and became a fan of Vin Scully. Ever since Paul DePodesta went there, I've become an even bigger fan.

I also root for some of the rustbelt city teams. This includes Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, but not Milwaukee (Selig.) I don't consider myself a fan of any of the teams I mentioned above, but I root for them whenever I catch them on television. All those teams are in small markets (smaller than Oakland.) I just like rooting for small town teams.

Least Favorite

  1. Giants- Do I really need to explain?
  2. Red Sox- I can't stand their obnoxious fans.
  3. Yankees

Detroit...
is not small-market.  There may have been a massive exodus out of that city over the past 20 years, but it's still a major metropolitan area.  As a Rust Belt resident, I couldn't let you get away with calling Detroit a small market.  Reminds me of an announcer I heard a few years back who referred to the Phillies as a "small-market team"...luckily, his partner reminded him that Philly was actually the 4th biggest market in the country.  Feel free to root against the mid-big market Detroit Tigers.

My List
Favorites (other than A's, A's, A's, Always A's)
  1. Cleveland: young, spunky team; my hometown; Fossee still revered there; plus people in Cleveland need something to live for
  2. Minnesota: another little team that could
  3. Dodgers: because it drives Giants' fans crazy
Hated
  1. Yankees (that's for you, A-Rod)
  2. Yankess (that's for you, Sheffield)
  3. Yankess (that's for you, Georgie Boy)

A 3-3 Count
Fave after the As.  Hard to really "like" anyone else, though.
  1. Astros -- they used to be on TV a lot when I was a teenager, and they had Nolan Ryan, one of my favorite players.  I've never been to Houston.  At that time, the Rangers were this odd sidebar club, but they do have a nice stadium now.
  2. Dodgers -- I used to hate how they owned the Braves when I was a kid and Phil Niekro pitched for Atlanta.  But I'm friendly with a SoCal uncle who has supported the Dodgers from his Long Beach/Seal Beach digs since the 1950s.  I have finally accepted Tommy Lasorda as a baseball demi-guru.
  3. Nationals -- just keeping an eye on them and enjoying the 1-0 games they're giving fans.  I like Robinson in general.
Easier to dislike than like:
  1. Angels -- Everything that's wrong with California today is embodied in this club.  Arnold should send anthropologists to study the club and figure out how to fix this "faded and jaded pearl" of a state.  Where, oh where, to begin slagging off the Angels?  There are so many entry points.  The Angels are third-generation Okies who's cultural ancestors moved into the state for a better life and are re-manufacturing their identity as prominent Californians by the week.  The Angels <rant deleted due to conscience>
  2. Cardinals -- no real reason except some grating personalities there over the years and I'm in the minority in not liking their stadium.  I'm in the minority in never liking Ozzie Smith, for goodness sake, so there's no way I'd like the lesser lights who played on/managed that team.
  3. Twins -- Minnesota was all about the Vikings and the Purple People Eaters for me.  Baseball doesn't fit into the equation in that state.  Of course, the Vikings moved indoors and lost their tough image.
  4. Who cares if I have four?  Diamondbacks.  Inappropriate place for pro teams, for some reason, and the Cactus League be darned.  It's just odd.  And the hated St Louis Cardinals moved there too.  How many cardinals do you see winging over Yuma at high noon in the summer?  Silly, silly.
  5. And five plus?? In no particular order, the Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies, Orioles, fake-team Mariners, and the sublimely awful Devil Rays.

Favorite/Hated 3 Teams
Favorites:
  1. Saint Paul Saints (my home town)
  2. Minnesota Twins (playing next door to my home town, and in honor of 1989 and 1991 as well as the first major league game I saw on June 30, 1967 at Metropolitan Stadium.  Play was interrupted by one of the worst non-tornadic thunderstorms in the last 100 years and we were practically blown off the upper deck, and it would be eleven years before I returned to the stands, just in time for the Bombo Rivera era)
  3. Montreal Expos of sainted memory/Toronto Blue Jays (because when you're a Minnesotan you're almost Canadian)
Loathed and execrated:
  1.  Yankees
  2.  Angels
  3.  (Sorry, Tim) Braves, because of the stupid tomahawk chop
I used to rather like the Red Sox in their lovable-loser era, until I encountered a) their fan base b) Kevin Millar c) Jason Varitek. Now I hate the fans, but can't wholly loathe the team because of Damon and Bill Mueller who always seemed like the most decent fellow on the Giants.

Favs/Hates
With a few exceptions, these categories tend to be fluid for me over the years and game to game depending on matchups. At one time I really hated the Braves. I hated their dumb chop and their announcers used to grind my nerves. Now I'm failrly ambivalent toward them, and of course root for them when Hudson is on the mound. I also root for St Louis when Mulder is pitching. Otherwise, the only teams I consistently root for other than the A's are:

-Dodgers: always have, except during the World Series in '88
-Baltimore: Miggy and because I'd rather they won the east over NY and Boston

On the hate side, I will always root against these teams (except where it's advantageous for the A's for one of these teams to win):

-Seattle/Texas/Angels: division rivals, but I really don't have that visceral hate for them that I have for these three...
-Yankees: hating the Yankees is just a sign that you are sane
-Boston: at one time I rooted for this team, just to stick it to the Yankees. But then they had to go and become the Yankees Jr, and with even more obnoxious fans (which I didn't think was possible)
-SF: grew up my whole life in this area where one team apparently can do no wrong. And wouldn't you know it's the least deserving local team? I'll never get it. The A's, 49ers, Raiders, even the frickin Warriors have all brought home championships, but what team gets a free pass and more love from the media than anyone else? The Giants.
