A's Draftees

I've dug up some info on some of the A's new 2005 draftees.  This is pretty much the same stuff I posted in the draft thread, but I've decided to make it a diary.

Right on...
Thanks, that's good stuff.

Okay, so far Billy Beane has selected five highschool pitchers...WTF!!??

I can see it now: David Forst in a frantic search, scouring the Oakland Coliseum for new chairs to throw.  Perhaps Billy Beane can go out to the parking lot and single-handedly throw the Raiders' bleacher structure into the bay.

holy crap
I cannot believe the interest in the draft--511 comments and counting!!  Regarding an amature draft?!  Holy Hattebergs!

Somebody ought to send a memo to ESPN--they could pick up a whole rating point just from AN members alone by televising a draft update show.

I'd watch the MLS draft if it was televised

Draft rules
can anyone tell me the draft rules about high school players?  How long do the A's have to sign these guys?  Could they go play a year at a college and then sign?  Any details (or a link) would be great!

Thanks

I'll take part...
the only part I can really handle, and that is the part about re-entry into the draft.  Unlike the NHL, if you draft a player but he chooses to return to school (or attend college if he's right out of high school), the player will re-enter the draft the next year.  Thus, the team that drafted him the previous year loses his rights.  So in order to retain these guys the A's have to sign them...I don't know what the deadline is.

so
its a wasted pick if the player doesnt sign, its not like the A's would get an extra pick next year.

Im scratching my head just as much as everyone else is.

by pickinmachine on Jun 7, 2005 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah it's a wasted pick
I'm not a big fan of how the MLB draft works, signability determines the order way too much.  NFL rookie contracts have little room for negotiation; you're pretty much going to make less than the guy taken before you but more than the guy taken after you.  I know it's different because they're entering the league right away, but it seems skewed when Teagarden will demand a huge contract at pick #69...

signing deadlines
teams have a year to sign draftees, or just before the next year's draft.

However,if a high schooler decides on college instead of signing, the team is out of luck.

by OaklandSi on Jun 7, 2005 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rules from the link above
Players who are eligible:
  • High school players
  • 21-year-old players (regardless of school standing)
  • Juniors or seniors from four-year schools
  • Junior college players (regardless of how many years they have played)
The club retains rights to sign a player for 51 weeks or until they start full-time in a four-year school.

A player who enters a junior college cannot be signed until the juco season ends.

The player must consent to being selected again by the same team in a future draft.  Otherwise, the same team cannot draft the same player in the subsequent draft.

Mazzaro
Has a learning disability and has a hard time picking up on things. I wonder how that will translate into higher levels of ball. I hope it doesnt hurt his growth. Him being a Jersey boy and all.

My friend is the Manager of one of Rutherford's rival schools. He said Mazzaro throws low 90's (91-92) but has a wicked Knuckle-Curve. Should be interesting. Said he heard before the draft he was leaning toward going to St. Johns, but since he went pretty high, maybe he signs instead.

He is actually pitching today in a State Semi-Final game today. Ill post his line tommorrow when its in the paper.

Wondering aloud.
BB goes on a HS SP rampage. What's the reason?
  1. It's a sign of change from the new ownership (i.e., we've got more money to sign these guys now).
  2. BB thinks so much of his current prospects in the system that he thinks that only high-ceiling guys will be able to beat out the guys already in the system.
  3. It's just a matter of making contrarian hay while the rest of MLB chases his ideas.
  4. He's tired of having a "book" of tendencies by which he's known.
  5. Watching Joe Blanton throw like a RH Jamie Moyer pine for the hard stuff of Jeremy Bonderman, or...
  6. The same aliens that made him trade for Charles Thomas are still in charge of his facilities.

Pennington
Okay, I officially love this guy:

From BA

The party plans began quickly around the Pennington house. It will be a big Texas shindig with a distinctive flair--all green and gold.

"(My family is) fired up. We went on a two-hour shopping spree, and I think we bought every Oakland A's hat and shirt in the town of Corpus Christi," Cliff Pennington said after being named as the first-round selection of the A's in Tuesday's draft. "We're going to have a party tomorrow. They've ordered green streamers. They're really pumped."

Maybe not, though -- if the Trib's right about him already having signed, they may have had a deal decided on before the draft. So maybe the agent's gonna be bringing the green and gold party hats. :-)

Mazzaro
High schools: A's pick Rutherford's Mazzaro in 3rd round
Wednesday, June 08, 2005

BY ED BARMAKIAN
For the Star-Ledger
There's an entire chapter in the book "Moneyball" on why Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane, whose philosophy the 2003 book is based on, doesn't take high school players in the draft.

Maybe it's time to add a new chapter to the book since the Athletics went against their well-publicized system to draft high school pitcher Vin Mazzaro of Rutherford yesterday in the third round of the First-Year Player's Draft.

Mazzaro's selection makes him the highest high school pitcher taken from North Jersey since Willie Banks out of St. Anthony in Jersey City was the third player taken overall in the 1987 draft by the Minnesota Twins.

"They called me last night (Monday) and told me that they don't normally take high school players," said Mazzaro, who now can choose between the pros and a full ride to St. John's. "But they came out of their meeting and said they had me at the top of their list. That gave me a hint they were interested."

With the No. 1 pick, the Arizona Diamondbacks selected Virginia high school star shortstop Justin Upton. Upton and his brother B.J., the second pick in 2002 by Tampa Bay, are the highest-drafted siblings.

Mazzaro (12-1) got the word of his selection right after he warmed up to start the Group 2 state semifinal game against Wallkill Valley. The right-hander then went out and pitched a complete-game, 2-1 victory to put his team in the state championship game for the second straight year. He allowed four hits, an unearned run, struck out 11 and hit one batter.

Ramapo High right-hander Shooter Hunt, who has a full ride to Virginia, was not selected in the first 18 rounds despite being rated in the same class as Mazzaro.

"It will be fun if I get drafted or even if I don't get drafted," Hunt said of his possible selection today.

Steve Garrison, a left-hander at the Hun School, was the second high school player from New Jersey drafted, selected in the 10th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. Other local players taken included outfielder Will Venable of Princeton, the son of former major-leaguer Max, who is a hitting instruction in the Padres organization.

Also taken from the high school ranks were Zach Braddock, a left-handed pitcher from Gloucester Catholic, grabbed in the 18th round by the Brewers, and St. Peter's Prep catcher Nick Criaris, taken in the 18th round by the Boston Red Sox.

Steve Kleen
I just graduated from Pepperdine and have seen Steve Kleen, pick #341, play a few times. It lists him as Right-handed pithcer, but the guy spent a lot of time at 1st base this past year. He is a power-hitter in the Dan Johnson/Giambi mold, throws righty but bats lefty.

He was our most consistent hitter for most of the year, and I would imagine that he would be more valuable to the organization as a hitter, since we drafted a million other, younger right-handed pitchers.

Think outside the box...
Evaluation/Reflection I wasn't too sure of what to expect when I decided to take this class... Ancient literature is not something that I was exactly familiar with. I am glad I stuck with the class though, it was a great learning experience and it was nice to be able to view topics concerning women [some of which we continue to deal with currently] from an ancient perspective. The texts were difficult to get through, but they were interesting for the most part. The lectures were great - I didn't miss a single one all quarter, and I haven't missed any sections either. Anyway, so we are asked to grade ourselves, right? This is always the worst thing to have to do. Well I received a B- on my first paper, and if I was to be honest, I have to admit that at the time I expected higher although I now understand the areas in which I fell short. I'm not really sure how my quizzes add up... There were two I did very well on, the first one was not so great, and we still have another one coming up. As far as the final paper goes, I am pretty proud of the work I did for it, especially between the first draft and the second one. I struggled quite a bit to come up with material to write about. While my peer editing group told me that I `had a good topic, but you need to make it longer' I didn't really get any specific pointers as to what direction I was supposed to take my paper in. I think I made a few original points, especially concerning Diotima's passive influence on Socrates. I'm hoping that this is an A- to an A quality paper, I'm still trying to develop as a writer and I'm not too sure where I stand, or where I really need improvement. In any case, I think/hope I have done enough quality work and given enough contributions in class to deserve a B+. - Melody Hard hit the whole way. Makes Clint Barmes' absence sting a little less :( I wouldn't have minded seeing more Nebraskans in Oakland though :) I wouldn't have minded seeing more Nebraskans in Oakland though :) Like bewildered. Half of my position players are Yankees... I didn't really win any of the offensive stat categories for fantasy baseball last week. But I did sweep pitching, since I had Zito and Haren and Street :) "Since when are hiar, eyes and smile the three deciding attributes?" "I dunno-when were girls invented?" If a guy is a good pitcher and a good hitter, their team should utilize them in the best way possible and play them both in both positions. Start a game at 1B... And move into long relief if it's necessary. Or enter the game as a starter, then move into 1B or DH to hit in the later innings.

Too bad that would never happen, especially when you consider stuff like hot streaks, tired arms, and much higher risk of potential injury. But it would be nice to see some team really go out of the box and pull a switch like that. Maybe if the game is a blowout in favor of the A's, they could throw a guy like Kotsay in to close, just for fun. Of course, that's also really rude to the opposing team, it's like, "Hah you guys suck so bad even my outfielders can pitch better than you." Oh well, don't mind me.

by Melody on Jun 8, 2005 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh noes.
Don't mind this, I'm such an idiot. This is why I should always preview posts before posting them... I ended up posting all of the random notes I had in Microsoft Word from class evals to stuff I've had to spellcheck because I selected-all and copy-pasted instead of copying just what I needed. This can be deleted, or we can leave it as a testament to how much of a scatterbrain I am :)

OK
If you don't win for "best quote" on AN, that would just be a complete injustice.

LMAO, I wondered
just how far outside the box we were going with this one.  Talking Socrates.

Love it.

Justin Sellers
Very high ceiling, not a great body, only stands about 5'11 but makes up for it with a very strong arm, disciplined plate approach, smooth fielding, and he also hits to the opposite field with some pop.

I played against him this year in our league and he won one game with a bases loaded triple opposite field, then pulled his team within 1 with a 2-run HR opposite field...Signing him could come with complications, however, because of his scholarship to Cal State Fullerton.  I'm excited to see how this will play out (signing vs. college).

Sellers was in the same boat as Chase d'Arnaud, who also received a scholarship from Pepperdine, Sellers went drafted while d'Arnaud went undrafted after the first day despite finishing the HS season batting .512.  Maybe this is a sign that Sellers is seriously considering making the jump?

A's Picks Thus Far
by position:

Right Handed Pitcher: 12 (6 HS, 6 COL)

Middle Infield: 5

Outfield: 3

Catcher: 3

Left Handed Pitcher: 3

Third Base: 1

First Base: 1

That is as of pick #791

A few late Catcher picks. But heh, can YOU tell what we focused on in the draft?

Lots of Right Handed Pitching and Middle Infielders (4 SS, 1 2B)

defensive spectrum
Clearly the focus is on pitchers this year, but when it comes to position players you have to remember that most players good enough to be prospects are the best athletes on their high school and even college teams, and end up playing premium defensive positions there, but will move leftward on the defensive spectrum before they reach the majors. As examples, Chavez and Ellis were shortstops, Giambi was a third baseman, and Swisher was a center fielder (even through AAA). So it's not unusual that a lot of the position players drafted are currently shortstops or center fielders.
