You wanted it, you've got it.

Who will the A's take?  Who is the next Huston Street out there?  Or Rich Harden?  Or Barry Zito?

Stay tuned.

Sweeet!
Blez, you're the best!

Okay.  Let's start with obscure stuff.

Here's a little known player that I'd like the A's to take in a late-round pick:

Chris Rahl played for William and Mary this year.  Scouts have compared him to Kotsay, which I think is a pretty good comparison.

My wife and I watched him play a couple weeks ago and I was pretty impressed.  He has a nice swing and hits well to the gaps.  He's also fairly patient(.380 OBP) and, like Kotsay, plays great defense.

Forty isn't old -- for a tree.

Baseball America
...doesn't think Trevor Crowe will fall to the A's. THey predict SS cliff pennington (hmmm, do we really need a shortstop. he could probably be moved), with us taking HS OF John Drennen in the supplemental round.

by Alien @ Athletics Nation on Jun 7, 2005 8:56 AM PDT reply actions

No Drenen Please!!!
If Crowe is gone and that is likely. I would like to see Ellsbury from Oregon State. Tad less power with more speed.

Either that or take a pitcher. My heart will be broken if it is a HS position player.

by novaoakland on Jun 7, 2005 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

I think
Billy Beane will surprise us all.

While it's true we need pitching pretty badly, I suspect Billy is looking for trade bait more than for players we need now.

Huston's Heir
I would like them spend their supplemental pick on J. Brent Cox, Texas's new closer. Can never have too much bullpen help.

by novaoakland on Jun 7, 2005 9:32 AM PDT up reply actions

If we got
Cliff Pennington and John Drennen, thast definitely a steal. Seriously. There are a few pitchers i'm hoping the A's take. Either Jacob Marceuax from Mcneese State, or Lance Broadway from whats it called, TCU.

I've all of a sudden started to like Pennington, i think he'd be a nice future lead off hitter.

California here I come, right back where I started from, Californiaaaaa, Californiaaaaa, here I coooooome (June 24th). (OC, i was inspired)

Carillo
I'm still holding out hope that he falls to the A's at 21. The A's need pitching. We are loaded with hitters in the minors. if not Carillo then Torra just to screw with the Red Sox. :)

is just a way of describing the kind of defensive infielder the guy is. If the A's were to require a move to 2b, he may not hesitate. Now if that's the case, do the A's take Jed Lowrie, (2b, Stanford) as the supplemental pick if he's still available?

why pick a SS??
Pennington turns 21 next week.

Presumably he's two years away from the bigs, but not much more.

In 2 years.........

The A's may not have resolved their 2B situation long-term;

The A's may not be in Oakland, or will be leveraged for a new ballpark, and thus payroll could be lower or higher than it is now. If higher maybe they have the luxury of carrying this guy as a backup in 2007. If lower maybe Crosby won't be affordable much longer and he'll be groomed to replace him;

Eric Chavez-- Billy beane's protestations to the contrary-- might not be here anymore, thus freeing up someone for a move to 3B;

Or, most likely, pennington will be a great bargaining chip to get a player necessary for a late season pennant move in 2006 or possibly 2007;

5. Flower Mound (Flower Mound, Texas)
Last Year's Record: 37-8
Outlook: Seniors Craig Italiano, Brandon Gaviglio, Jordan Meaker and Paul Kelly give Flower Mound arguably the nation's top pitching staff. Italiano, a TCU recruit, is rated the nation's No. 38 overall prospect by SchoolSports.com. The right-hander's fastball has been clocked as high as 98 mph. Gaviglio, a left-hander and Oklahoma State recruit, carried an 18-1 career record into this season. TCU recruit Kelly, who had 10 saves as the team's closer last year, is also the team's best hitter. Flower Mound would like to avenge last year's loss in the Class 5A state final to this year's preseason No. 2, Moody

It's Ok Guys
Italiano throws 98 and he's just in HS, and Lansford has nice numbers and is Carneys son. I don't think this has anything to do with Beane shifting everyeons attention away from HS pitching or anything like that.

It's simple: There just weren't that many good college arms, they were all gone by the time 36 came around. This draft was FULL of high school talent, and Billy got two he thought it was worht taking a flier on. I got criticized over on Minor League Balll for taking two high school pitchers in the seconod round. Look! Beane did it also!

You know they won't all pitch for the A's. but I'll bet more than one will prove to be a valuable trading chip

by OaklandSi on Jun 7, 2005 12:20 PM PDT reply actions

Reason for the HS pitchers
Is that the our rotation is good for close to the next 5-6 years. We wont need them to fast track to the Bigs like we did with Hudson, Zito, Mulder, etc.

In the 4 years it will take them to learn to pitch we will still have 2 years to let them grow into true starters.

Beane hated HS pitchers because he needed guys to step in right away and because they were such gambles. Now he can afford to wait an be patient with them. Makes plenty of sense.

by ChavyGoldX4 on Jun 7, 2005 12:20 PM PDT reply actions

High School Pitchers
It is against almost all logic to take high school pitchers so high.  Why? Not a fast
financial return It takes too long to reach the majors.  To high of a risk.  The body is not mature and the chance of injury is great.  They have much further to go to develop than college pitchers.

Given that, why did Beane draft them?  Two considerations.  First, he did not think much of the available college pitchers and second, he is relatively happy with the position players in the A's system.  He was therefore more willing to take the higher risk on high school arms.

Baseball America on Pennington
21. Athletics: Cliff Pennington, ss, Texas A&M

Pennington's best attribute is his makeup. Scouts have loved Pennington's grit and energy since he was in high school, and he won the Cape Cod League's 10th player award for his spirited play last summer. Pennington is more than just a gamer, however, offering tools across the board. He can bat at the top of a lineup, making consistent contact and providing gap power from both sides of the plate. He doesn't have blazing speed, but he runs well and his instincts make him a threat on the bases. Pennington's savvy also enhances his range at shortstop, where he can make both the routine and acrobatic plays. He has an above-average arm, a quick release and the ability to make throws from any angle.

Who kidnapped Beane?
Where has our philosophy of drafting college players gone? We've used 3 out of 5 picks on High Schooler's. High School pitchers to be more specific. Didn't Beane say in Moneyball that there was too great of a risk in drafting HS pitchers?

Risk/reward
the pendelum has swung. That's what people don't get about Moneyball. It does not advocate any specific baseball philosophies at all. Does it advocate OBP? Nope. College pitchers? Nope. Not stealing? Nope. Moneyball is an economic philosophy based on extracting maximum value by using statistical analysis to find and take advantage of market inefficiencies. Just like happened with OBP, other teams have caught up with the idea that HS pitchers were overvalued (and perhaps come to undervalue them). Rany did an excellent study on this recently in BP, which showed that, over the years, the difference between drafting HS and College players has shrunk to nearly nothing.

That's what seperates the brilliant from the smart. Having the ability to recognize that yesterday's truths aren't the same as tomorrow's and the creativity to constantly adapt to a changing world are what will consistently keep the Billy Beanes of the world ahead of the Joe Margans - in baseball, in business, and in life.

The next time I slap a guy's ass, can we all just assume it's because I wish I was a baseball player?

Moneyball was a bus. / econ. book. Only BB takes those ideas and tosses them on a baseball diamond. Look at GM right now, bleeding from the pocketbook. To completely over simplify, they are cutting jobs while other car makers gain in market share. They forgot that when gas hits high levels.. people dont want fat SUVs.

failed to see that gas prices would rise to the point of hurting SUV sales.

I wouldn't say Moneyball is gone
I think Moneyball was never a set way of looking at baseball it was all about finding inefficiencies in the market.  It appears that more and more teams are drafting college players these days.  As that happens college players become overvalued and high schoolers become undervalued.  I don't think Beane has changed his philosophy, I think the market has changed.

To be fair, they are built on free agency and lean on vets. The problem is, their vets. seem to be from the Civil War. Bonds, Benitez, Jason Schmidt.. ect. have all broken down. By the way, I remember the Giants fans / radio / manager / ect. saying how great it was that Schmidt threw 120+ pitches per game. Hmm.. I wonder why some people thought they were asking for injuries? Then their approach to finding a closer is strange. But, its their team.

Bunch
Bunch, a 6-5, 210-pound catcher, was a First Team All-CIF selection last year at Serrano High School in Victorville. He led the Diamondbacks in every offensive category, hitting .548 with 34 hits, seven home runs, and 27 runs batted in while slugging 1.065 and scoring a team-high 33 runs. UCR Head Coach Doug Smith likes Bunch's versatility, saying that, "Kevin is one of the top catchers in California. He has shown the ability to hit for average and power. He will also be used as a pitcher due to his strong arm."

Billy Beane has cornered the market on the pitching for the 2006-08 drafts!!! If he signs these kids with Wolff and Fischer's moolah, they should be primed for our move into a new stadium and help provide depth for our 2008-2009 teams.
