However this game ends up...
I think this game is an example of the kind of games we expected to be playing all the time. A mediocre SP performance, but with a HR-given lead handed over to the bullpen for a tight finish either way.

Games like this make me nervous. I think Beane's plans were to give us all ulcers.

I've only browsed the threads
so I may be repeating info already given, but for those who may not know Kielty is out nursing a slight groin injury (available to pinch hit).

from the game notes
"Outfielder Bobby Kielty, who said he tweaked a groin muscle while scoring from first base on Nick Swisher's triple Tuesday night, did not start Thursday but was available to pinch hit. He said he should be fine for Friday's game"

MLB audio
I'm listening to the Toronto announcers now.  They're talking about Street.

by iglew on Jun 2, 2005 9:21 PM PDT up reply actions

What are they saying?
I never did get to find out what Bobby Crosby said about Street on April 14th... The telecast is the Yankees one. [I asked my mom to tape the game, and she was erasing commercials every time she noticed, and she accidently cut out Street's inning. It's the only thing she cut out.]

Anyone else have the same problem, or is it just me?  I'm gonna try the Toronto feed now.

Try the Blue Jays audio
It's working, and they're talking about Street.  Full of praise, calling him the "potentially soft underbelly of the bullpen in the closer role," but nonetheless praising his nasty stuff and his great makeup.

That's kinda duplicitous
Is is like they're saying, "He sucks but he's still good."

"potentially the soft underbelly"
is only because of his major league inexperience.  They're full of praise

Your're going to love this, the word that won the national spelling bee was:

"appoggiatura"

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2005/06/02/national/a131227D66.DTL

As a musician I can't even spell that correctly, I always miss a "g."

Hey, I resent that!
Usually I don't even care about butts. I just thought it was weird that Street didn't get ambushed the way Kotsay did on Monday night... In fact he stood around and talked to Kendall for a good 20 seconds before anyone else came onto the screen to congratulate him. The butt slap move is usually a sign of respect, not sure why Street didn't get more tonight [only from Zito, it appears], or why he specifically targeted DJ :)

i'm a bit worried with him going back-to-back days; velocity said to drop

by oakfan808 on Jun 2, 2005 9:43 PM PDT reply actions

Back to back
Macha will have to be a little cautious with him so he can build up arm strength.  We'll need an alternative closer.  Beats me who that might be...

Then again, we probably aren't going to have too many situations where he will need to pitch on consecutive nights.  For example, we've got Etherton (against Halladay) and Blanton going the next two days.

by bear88 on Jun 2, 2005 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Calero?
I'm a bit concerned about how many innings Street will end up with -- he's being used a lot. I'd love to see him rack up the saves, but I definitely agree about having an alternate closer available. Maybe Calero, if he looks good upon his return?

Though when in doubt... just leave the Duke in an extra inning. He does everything else.

by Kyli on Jun 2, 2005 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

awesome job huston!
yeah yeah, pressure is a choice, but he had to be feeling SOMETHING there, but he was terrific. here's to many many MANY more to come!!

also, wonderful job by our pitching staff. saarloos clearly didnt have anything great today but still gave us a chance to win and kept it close. duke was terrific in a tight spot and street was as well.

another well played game. makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
