I've got to say
I don't agree with Macha sending Blanton out for the eighth even though it worked out.  Our pen is plenty rested, USE IT.

Will he pitch the 9th?
That would be crazy...?

We have half a dozen rested people who could. Save the win & his arm for next week.

by baseballgirl on Jun 29, 2005 9:25 PM PDT reply actions

I've still got to say
that Macha's choice to leave Blanton out for the eighth is a bad one.  I think part of the reason Mulder broke down toward the end of last season (besides his mental issues) was being left out too long earlier in the year.

It'd be different if half the pen wasn't well rested now.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Jun 29, 2005 9:26 PM PDT reply actions

Remember Blez
Blanton didn't have any high-stress, high pitch-count innings.  That can often play a bigger role in fatigue than the pure number of pitches or innings.
Fearing Mecir since 2000.

by salb918 on Jun 29, 2005 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Extra rest due all star break
He may also be thinking that Blanton will be getting a little extra rest due to the break.

by Donner on Jun 29, 2005 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

107 Pitches
That's not bad.  I believe he only had 89 after the 7th inning and he wasn't struggling at all.  The bullpen was ready if he got in any trouble.  Let Smokin Joe enjoy his success and raise his confidence level.

by guapobob on Jun 29, 2005 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Blez... are you serious??
He was at only 89 pitches after 7. He had just retired 10 batters in a row. Give the pen a little rest-- there will be a day soon when they'll thank Macha for it.

Though the way this staff is going we can start to seriously consider only going with 6 relievers from here on out:

Street
calero
Duke
Rincon

Then a choice between yabu, Chadford and Flores-- pick 2.
