Here's break from your regularly scheduled angst over Kotsay's departure.
As background, there is a running thread on AN about how Chicks Dig the Long Socks*. It's gotten beyond .jpgs with certain posters actually handing notes to the A's detailing why each of them in particular should wear high socks.
Now I am still getting my head around this. My wife says the high socks are cool and look more interesting but aren't necessarily sexy.
Kaufman writes about stirrup socks which I remember wearing in LIttle League. They seemed normal then, but completely bizarre in retrospect. http://www.salon.com/news/sports/col/kaufman/2005/06/21/tuesday/index.html
And he links to an absurdly detailed article about socks through MLB history. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=lukas/050602
I don't know why I'm writing about this except that I've always thought long socks looked hopelessly dorky and it turns out I could have been a hit with the ladies if I'd simply hiked up my socks on the field and now I'm filled with a gnawing sense of regret. Shucks.
ps. I'm not a complete sexist, the phrase (*) is a reference to #10 at http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/espn25/story?page=listranker/25bestcommercials
