Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Chavez interview on Dan Patrick.

Great interview....Here is the recap form what I can remember.

On Eva Longoria: She is doing the "Hollywood Hokey Doke" but would never be deperate enough to date any of the A's.

On the lineup "We're terrible."  Talked about how the road trip came at the worst time possible.  Now just fighting to someone be respectable.

People in NY need to stop crying about A Rod's defense...."He's raking".

"Damon throws like a girl", but "great guy and love him".

Would love to have Jason back but "maybe the guy who threw the beer might disagree".  Said he should do what he can to work out deal with NY and get out.  Best scenario for both.

He says a lot of players aks him on the bases "How's Moneyball now?".  Travis Lee just asked this series.  They both laughed hard about this.

He talks to Huddy a lot more often then Mulder.  He and Huddy are very tight.

Talked about Teammates and "TAB"..then said Byrnes is gonna be traded along with other guys....

So the good stuff...

Dan then asked who was leaving and Chavez gave a "top 5 Hit list".  They were 1) Dotel 2) Durazo 3) Rincon 4) Hatteberg 5) Byrnes

Then acknowledged Byrnes "might be leaving" and said Barry loves NY and would love to be a Yankee, esp for the run supprt.

When asked if he was leaving said "I will be in Oakland"

Said the best he's heard on the road last week was "Hey Chavez, where's the rest of your battign average?"  They then joked about his terrible stat line and he said it was coming around and they both laughed a bunch and then interview ended.

Was a great interview.....both laughed a lot..Chavy is a great guy

eh...
quite pedestrian compared to the hype

Definately not OH MY GOD!! worthy

by NYC on Jun 2, 2005 1:01 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The honesty about who was getting dealt
was something very few players would be...and he acknowledged they would get moved.  But I didnt say it was OH MY GOD..just summarized it as a great interview

Moneyball
I love how everyone attributes the A's struggles this year to moneyball.

Ummm did you notice that Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder are not pitching anymore for the A's?

Isn't that the joke?
Lee says How's moneyball, meaning it never was moneyball it was the Big 3, so how's life without them now? Just a thought.

by oakwin2004 on Jun 2, 2005 1:34 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yea...
Exactly..all the players heard about was Beane and Moneyball....The opposing players know it was a lot more than just Moneyball, altho that got so much press...time for some good natured payback.

My mind was racing.

This is typical Chavy. I, too, appreciate his brutal honesty.

Nice
Not nearly as bad as I feared. From your summary I'd give it a 2 out of 10 for "Foot in Mouth" rating. Probably gave too much opinion about trades. As if Billy would tell him the whole truth knowing his reputation for loose lips.

Glad to hear he didn't say anything about the Sox. I was pretty sure that was just a load of garbage anyway. Didn't make sense from any angle.

Zito a Yankee
we've known now for a while that he likes ny

I would hate
to see Zito a Yankee. Living in NY everyone likes the Yankees here even those who know nothing about baseball. I wouldn't want any of our big name players to go there. It's just disgusting to think about it.

Zito
He makes himself hard to love
or maybe chavez makes Zito hard to love

by NYC on Jun 2, 2005 1:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i wish eric would shut his mouth
his honesty is the thing i love and hate the most about him. eric has no business getting on a national radio show and adding to the crap of player rumors. if i'm any of those 5 players i'm talking "up close and personal" with eric around the batting cage tonight.

just shut you're pie-hole eric. the team is playing well for once and the guys are feeling good about themselves...they don't need this shit right now.

The "Free Matt Watson from Sacramento-Redux" Committee is back in business...taking new memberships...crap!!!

Chavez should learn to take a more professional attitude towards the media ...

Zito
In the AP's wrapup of last night's game, Zito was quoted as saying the following:

"I've got to be like a freshly waxed car and let everything bead right off you."

by monkeyball on Jun 2, 2005 2:06 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He is only speculating....
Doubt he is given an significant "insider" information.  Those five he mentioned are not any surprises, nor is Zito's love for NY.  However, I see him in Dodger Blue, not pinstripes.

I'm really pissed at Chavy on the laughing at "Moneyball" comment.  I wouldn't have taken that crap from DP or Travis Lee.  Have either of them been on teams that made the playoffs in consecutive years?  DP's comment about "Where's Moneyball now that Huddy and Mulder are gone?" was just pure ignorance.  And Travis Lee piping off about "Moneyball"...WHAT...TRAVIS Fing LEE is laughing about "Moneyball"??????  Dude, you play on the D-Rays, shut your mouth, you'll be going home every September, you ain't leaving the AL East celler as long as your on that team.  Even if I didn't believe in Moneyball which Chavy obviously dosen't, I would have at least stuck up for my teammates and GM......especially if it was coming from a guy on the D-Rays............Eric, grow a sack.

Now THIS is Billy Ball

Oh cmon....
Chavez made it clear it was a joke....There is a lot of ribbing each other in baseball.  Its a big fraternity for the most part.  There was nothing malicious about his comments.

Barry in So Cal
Barry can't handle the pressure in NY. He might do better as a Met than a Yankee cuz he'll have Peterson, but he's a bit of a head case and would not do well with the Skanks. A better fit for him would be the Dodgers or Padres. He's a SoCal boy and would dig being so close to home.

If it were me
the honesty would be out of pure delirium.  When you're on teh A's, you know how it goes.  You've seen all your friends get traded around you.  You've got an early dose of business if you start your career with the A's.  The funny part is that it isn't hidden by anyone.  Chavez just named names, being realistic.  It's too bad, but that's ust the way it is and it's probably Chavvy is so candid.  If I'm Chavvy, I'd take off too.  Check the next diary for a related story.

by RunRickeyRun on Jun 2, 2005 2:29 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He seemed to really be thinking about them tho..
And had thought about it...Didnt feel like he was just naming names.

by OaktownPower on Jun 2, 2005 2:30 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I heard it too.
He seems to have mulled over it quite a bit.  I think this adds to the rumors about him being traded and not wanting to be in Oakland.  I don't think he gives two shits about who he pisses off in the organization, be it Beane or anybody else.  Imagine going to your job and looking over your shoulder constantly, only to see everybody you eat lunch with and talk to about A's stuff with is getting fired, only to bring in some zit faced interns.  It makes you not care.  It makes you hate where you are, and it makes you want to go somewhere else.  Who can blame the guy.

That being said, I hope he stays.

The only good thing that could come from Chavvy getting traded is that it will kill all of teh Miggy vs. Chavez diaries.

by RunRickeyRun on Jun 2, 2005 2:56 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

but then...
we would have the "player to be named" Vs Miggy AND Chavez diaries.  Hehe.

I cant imagine Chavvy wanting to play anywhere else.  He obviously doesnt care for pressure and doesnt seem to want high pressure situations.

I think hes happy just chillin, got a huge long contract, playin baseball in Cali, what could be better.

by pickinmachine on Jun 2, 2005 3:02 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i too was surprised with his 5 players
i know those arent names that surprise anyone, but it didnt seem like something other guys would say. typical chavez i guess.

RunRickeyRun, i dont' think he HATES being an A. the trades havent been ideal so far, but if chavez wants some blame for how badly the a's have done so far, he should look at himself and not just beane and the trades. even with all the trades, it was hard to anticipate that level of offensive ineptitude.

and zito on the yankees? UGH. no wonder he has sympathy for giambi running off to the evil empire.

chavez has the unique ability to get me annoyed at him and others.

by nycfan on Jun 2, 2005 3:15 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

To be fair..
KNBR interviewed Chavez Tuesday or Wednesday morning. He seemed more than accepting of his early season troubles. Furthermore, he was convinced it was just an early season slump-thing. He thought he had things figured out and was convinced he would hit his homeruns in bunches. So, even the lack of power to date doesnt bother him. He did think the team was better than its record, but didnt seem "optimistic" about a playoff run anytime soon.

"Zen" Macha
Speaking as someone who hasn't said much positive about Macha in the past, I do think that the influence of Macha on Zito and Chavez has been extremely positive.

(I'm putting on my asbestos suit right now in anticipation of the "where's the fiery competitive leadership from Zito and Chavez?!?" and "these guys should hate losing so much it gives them ulcers and makes them steal lollipops from children!" posts.)

Now, it seems as though Z&C are both pretty level-headed guys anyway, but I think that they've both said some impressive things this year about really learning how to deal with adversity and to prepare themselves for the regression/progression-to-the-mean long march that is the 162-game season. And this, to me, seems a reflection of Macha -- and a big reason why Beane values Macha so highly.

I still think Macha has his tactical shortcomings, but in this aspect at least he seems to be a very good strategic match for Beane's approach.
