Kendall's power

Its not like we were expecting much power out of Jason, but even Scutaro has a couple of jacks this year.  This is from cbs.sportsline.com:

One more problem in Oakland: The A's didn't expect any power out of catcher Jason Kendall, and they're not getting any. As in, none. Kendall owns the longest active streak for any position player in baseball without a home run -- a career-high 114 games and 447 at-bats.

Flat out, Kendall needs to get going, if not hitting homers, then hitting those doubles and triples into the gaps, especially now that he is leading off.

I voted "2hr"
But after watching him play several games, I don't think I've ever seen him hit the ball to the warning track.

once
I saw him hit it barely to the front of the warning track. I don't see him getting any hr this year unless its going to be inside the park.

Just your Average $10.5 Mil player.....
weak doesn't begin to describe his hitting. We have a Jermaine Dye without any power what-so-ever.

What Power?
You can't expect him to be something he's not. I preferred last year's catcher for offensive productivity. This is ridiculous.

Melhuse
Even he hits homers every now and then.  I actually like him better than Kendall.  But if you sit Kendall for tem minutes, he's gonna cry like a little b***h.

I feel bad for Melhuse.
He's a good backup catcher, he really needs to be getting more playing time -- given how Kendall's hitting, the dude should be volunteering to sit once a week and let Adam smack the ball a bit.

by Kyli on Jun 17, 2005 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is gonna cry like a bitch?
So you would prefer the ho hum attitude of some players.  Forget that.  I love that when he sits he is pissed.  He wants to be out there.  Kendall did not forget how to hit.  Also all those people who crticize him behind the plate, out staff loves him.  Now who am I going to trust about kendall?  A bunch of people on an A's blog or the A's staff?  Sorry I am going against AN here.  I just trust the guys throwing to him. I was very upset when I thought Melhuse was going to be our starter.  Also when Suzuki comes up having a vet like Kendall will help him develop.  Get off his back, he is a singles doubles guy.  Not a HR guy.

No
It's cool and all that he loves to play the game, no player should want to take a day off, but if you do get benched for a day to rest you don't have to complain like he does.  It's somewhat selfish to never take a day off so the backup catcher can get in the game.  If he were tearing it up and hitting .330 this would be a moot point of course, but right now he's right around .250, and that isn't anything Melhuse couldn't do, or Jeremy Brown, John Baker, maybe even Kurt Suzuki for less than a tenth of the money.  Kendall has been doing better recently so lets hope he's getting comfortable in the AL and will soon be putting up his career norms.

Kendall is a huge waste of money
The only threads he deserves to have dedicated to him is how to best get rid of this guy before he costs us 25-30 million dollars in salary.

How many good players
are not on the A's roster because of his salary. He is a slap httter at best, has a piss poor arm and don't give me any crap about his calling a great game. The pitches get called from the bench. All this for just south of 11 mil. Billy you are one smart dude.

The game gets called by the catcher
When you see him look into the dugout he is looking for play signs, not pitches.  Like pick off, pitch out,  defensive alignment.  Things are  a little different in pro ball then it is in HS or college.

Kendall
He'll finish the year batting .275 - .290 w/ 0 Homeruns.

His defense is sketchy.

I think he's done a great job w/ our pitching staff, so far.  His work ethic is unmatched on this team.  He's a "dirtbag" of a player, and the young guys can all learn from him...  Playing the game the right way.

With the help of Kendall:

  • Haren has exceeded my expectations.
  • Blanton looks to be coming around.
  • Harden will become a better "pitcher", rather than just a thrower.
  • Meyer will get some work w/ Kendall before it's all said and done.
All said and done, I think we'll look back on the "Kendall Experience" as a positive one.

Wow
A lot of statements based on nothing. I doubt he has the best work ethic on the team (Crosby, Kotsay), and I question what he has done for any of these pitchers besides make their job harder by not being able to block a ball or throw someone out.

No matter what, Im almost postive the "Kendall experience" is not going to be viewed in good light when its all said and done.

I doubt that he will even get to .275, but if he does, we are paying him close to 10 mill for batting .275 with no power and terrible d. Sounds like a bargain. We would be better off without him.

by ChavyGoldX4 on Jun 17, 2005 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Statements based on Nothing
You're absolutely Killing Kendall!

If you were to ask every player in the league about Kendall's work ethic, you would get the same answer.  He works his ASS off!

  • He's a hard nosed player
  • Breaks up double plays like no other (just ask Matsui w/ the Mets).
  • As a leadoff hitter for this team, we are an above .500 team
  • He's probably the fastest catcher in the AL
  • He'll end up w/ a .375 OBP
I think you're giving too much credit to Curt Young when talking about the young starting rotation.

Blocks
I was watching a Giants game about two weeks ago (hey, I just like watching baseball) and they mentioned that Mike Matheney was 2nd in the majors in balls in the dirt blocked with runners on base.....Kendall was first.  So it appears that Kendall is blocking pitches or else he's just had exponentially more chances than Matheney.

Melhuse is just better ...
all around.  He throws runners out, and given regular at bats he'll hit as many home runs as anybody on the team.  He may not hit for average, but even if Kendall hits .300 (which he won't), it will be the weakest .300 in baseball.  No extra base hits, and his singles don't even drive in runners from second because:
1.  they don't go out of the infield
or
2.  the outfield is playing so shallow the runners have no chance to score

by iceplant on Jun 17, 2005 11:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I wonder why the NL teams
didn't play him shallow...or did they? He's been a slap hitter for at least a couple of years, but til now that's been good enough for .300 averages.

What makes u think he will
hit as many HRs as anyone on th eteam?  Projected stats?  Those mean nothing.  Look at Durazo's projected stats hen we got him.  Check out Ginter's.  When you play more teams see your weaknesses.  Melhuse is a back up catcher and will never be much better,  Think of what Kendall needs to do in his firrst season in the AL
Learn about a new staff
Learn about all the pitchers in the league
Learn about all the hitters

Kotsay started off bad and came around in june and he only had to learn about one of those things.  KEndall will put on below average numbers this year.  After one full year he will be comfortable in the AL.

comfortable in the AL ...
with all due respect to you and Kendall, that's a load of crap.  Tell Vlad about comfortable.  It's great to know tendencies, but see ball, hit ball is the best approach if you're good.  (And if you bring up that Kotsay slumped at first, I would respond that yes, he did, but his defense was always stellar, AND he was conspicuously quiet as far as quotes and such until late in the year when he was hitting.)
As far as being a gamer, also a load of crap.  Nearly everybody in the majors is a "gamer", or they wouldn't be there.  And even if they're not, they know where their bread is buttered, and they all play hard.
That the young pitchers love him may be true,  but they'd love Melhuse just as much if he gunned down some would-be base stealers and kept their era's down ... I guarantee it.
As far as him being a singles and doubles hitter, he's not.  He's a weak singles hitter at best, from what I have seen.  I hope he gets it going as much as the next guy, but I think Melhuse should be getting ample playing time ... especially against power righties.  You can tell I'm wrong when Kendall starts throwing out runners and hitting .300

by iceplant on Jun 17, 2005 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You missed the point
as many people do.  IT IS HARDER ON A CATCHER TO CHANGE LEAGUES.  HE HAS MANY THINGS HE HAS TO LEARN, NOT JUST HITTING.  Vlad is different because he is vlad.  I am not going to compare anyone to that guy.  He is a freak when it comes to hitting.  Nobody seemed to watch this guy on the Pirates.  Do you think he forgot how to hit.  And with Kotsay, you do not need to learn how to play center in a new league.  Ciaches can dictate placement.  OBP with RISP .364 and with RISP with 2 outs, .407.   So when he needs to het gets the job done.  He is now in the spot he should be, leadoff.  Also in exchange for him we got rid of 2 guys who did not want to be in Oakland.  Melhuse has a CAREER avg of .236 and OBP of .292.  Are those the numbers you want from a catcher?  Last year with 250+ abs he hit a whooping .257.  Not sure if you are getting my point.  But he is mediocer at best.  I realize some people hate kendall but do you really think Melhuse is the answer?  Come on now, be realistic.  It was like saying DJ was  going to cure our offense woes and he has not ( I do like him in there though.  Across the borad, in Kendalls worse year, he is better than Melhuse.  "Lucky for me too, I have Jason Kendall calling my pitches, which simplifies it even more."- Huston Street.  While you may not see his value our closer sure does.  So disagree all you want but the pitchers love this guy and respect him.

I guess I'm hearing your point ,
but I'm disagreeing.  I am not concerned with his career numbers with the Pirates.  He was younger then and most of that time was before he hurt his ankle.  While I agree that changing to a new staff could be tough on a catcher, it should not affect his bat.  I am not saying that Melhuse will hit for higher average than Kendall, but he doesn't need to.  His average and OBP divert one's attention from the fact that he doesn't produce runs because he hits so weakly.  I would venture a guess that he would be responsible for as much production as Kendall.  That is, maybe he would be slightly less productive offensively, and reasonably more productive defensively.  I don't know, but I'm not at all impressed with Jason Kendall's game.  I didn't really watch him much when he was with the Pirates, but I always thought he was overrated because of the derth of decent catchers in the NL.  Just because he gets praise from some of the pitchers doesn't mean the team wouldn't be better with somebody else.

by iceplant on Jun 17, 2005 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I get what you are saying
He has not produced since comming here.  But that doesn't mean he is a bad player.  Learning a new staff and a new league's hitter will affect his hitting.  He only has so many hours in a day he can watch film and learn a league.  Other postions come here and can focus all that time watching film on the leagues pitchers.  He on the other hand needs to watch film of our pitchers, the leagues hitter and the leagues pitchers.  I guess I am just more willing to cut him slack.  I just have seen his track record so I trust him to come around.  I think this year he will hit .280 and next year will be back above .300.  And he is a singles hitter because he is a slap hitter, but so is ichiro, so was wade boggs and many other greats.  Slap singles hitters server their purpose, leadoff.  but AGREE TO DISAGREE

So after all that catching in his career up to last season he was still able to hit .300 with an even better September. Then he shows up at ST, without any games caught over winter, and all of a sudden he can't hit? That makes worlds of sense.

the decline may be starting to show up
(in September everyone has played all season -- in April everyone has has the offseason to recuperate.

I don't think he was a fraud, I do think he has played a lot of games as catcher. that does catch up.

I would love it if there was some other explanation. But this one makes sense.

Kendall is doing a great job of it so far
He age is advanced by his postion. I feel confident in saying Jason Kendall will never hit .300 in a season again.

If he isnt hitting .300 he isnt worth half of what he is getting. He must be dumped this offseason, if for nothing more than his defense costs us runs.

by ChavyGoldX4 on Jun 17, 2005 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Confident he'll NEVER hit .300 in a season again??
Maybe you mean literally hitting 300 on the button.

For a guy that is just over 30, with career avg of .303 including .325 in '03 and .319 in '04 I don't think you can quite say he'll never hit over 300 again.  I didn't see him play last year but his 3hrs  would indicate he didn't have much more power then as he does now.  So, what happened between this year and last that has mysteriously made jason kendal incapable of hitting over 300 for the rest of his career?

I'm not unconditionally defending his aquisition, but you can't make assumptions on the entirety of a player's career based on what you've seen in his first 60 games for a new team, in a new league.

Kendall Should Be Traded!
While we were all hopeful that he would be an improvement over last year, it hasn't worked out. So what are the options?
  1. Contract Buyout- not BB's style but in the long run frees up big buck$.
  2. Trade him. For what? Hard to say for a weak armed slappy singles hitter who plays hard. But his absence does open up other roster possibilities-see below.
3.Keep him. With Kotsay, we realized that we picked up a guy that exceeded our expectations. Kendall's play in comparison has been disappointing on all fronts.

4. Budget Issues. If we assume this year is lost, then I say let's see some of the minor league talent develop. If not what about next year when some of the younger catchers in the organization may step up and peform. Freeing up his contract to address other team needs would be great. Options such as resigning Kotsay, or improving bullpen/starting pitching would be beneficial. I'm actually for resigning Zito. His youth durability and experience solidifies the rotatation.

by Gerard on Jun 17, 2005 12:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

good luck trading him
maybe in 2007, when the Pirates pay most of his salary, it will be possible to move him. I'm not sure that any other team would take his contract on before then...

by OaklandSi on Jun 17, 2005 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Options ...
1. No it doesn't. He is guaranteed to make I believe about $27m over the next year and a half.
Why would he even consider a buyout for less than about $22m?
  1. As the Pirates showed over many years of trying to trade him - the only way they could move him was by taking on equally bad contracts in exchange.
  2. Yes, that's an option.
  3. There is no way to magically free up the money. No one would take his contract off our hands and he isn't going to volunteer to give back millions of dollars that we are contractually obligated to pay him.
The next time I slap a guy's ass, can we all just assume it's because I wish I was a baseball player?

Albatross...(Only good in golf)
RE:1 Devo, do you know if there is a club option or not? I suggested buyout b/c I don't know all of the details of his contract.
  1. I don't think he'll be an easy trade. 6 months ago+ we got rid of 2 headaches ( really 1 1/2 b/c Redman was good on the road)  for a guy that we all thought was an improvement. On paper it looked great. If he does go, I expect a NL team would be preferable at this time. As it stands, he's worse than when we had Dye on the team (post injury). At least with Dye, his hustle produced results, defensively.
  2. I expect he'll be on the team minimum until next year's all star break when his contract will be that much smaller.
  3. There might be a team that will be willing to take on his contract,if he meets their needs without expecting Oakland to take on an equal contract. Lower tier teams in terms of budgets won't but those with higher payrolls, hence deeper pockets may not consider it as much of an issue. I think with football and basketball we've been conditioned to expect trades to automatically equate into both teams trade an equal amount of $$ along with the players involved.

by Gerard on Jun 17, 2005 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

what I remember of the trade terms
is that Oakland pays all of his salary in 2006 and Pittsburgh pays most of his salary in 2007. It's still the same contract that he had in Pittsburgh, the A's just have him for the last three years of the six year contract.

if moving the contract to the A's doesn't change any thing else he would also have a no trade clause (don't know if the transfer changed that).

There's a Par 6, Albatross waiting to happen
on the 18th at Chabot Golf Course in Oakland.
  1. There's not. He's signed through '07 - all guaranteed.
  2. I suspect Kendall is a positive influence on the pitchers. His contract is also a few mil smaller than Dye's and he has the chance to improve, whereas Dye kept up pretty much this level or worse (relative to position) all three years.
  3. That's true - with each passing day the likelihood of a trade increases, mid 2006 is probably about where we might get to the point where there is some chance of it happening.
  4. All of the upper tier teams are set at catcher. 'tek, Posada, Molina, Piazza (eek), Lieberthal.
The next time I slap a guy's ass, can we all just assume it's because I wish I was a baseball player?

Iv'e played #18 at Chabot many times...
...back in college but my handicap was so high(meaning I sucked at the time) I was never able to get on in two. Fun hole, interesting course.
I thought about Piazza and Posada. These guys are getting up there in age, especially Piazza. I could see him as a DH/1b in the AL. Heck, getting Kendall would be an improvement in throwing runners out. Posada's contract and the A's?Yankee needs wouldn't be met. How's that for a deal Kendall and Durazo for Piazza? Now I'm hallucinating...
I don't knock Kendall's experience, especially with the young arms we have. I still am hopeful he produces in ways both satisfactory to  management (BB) and to his constituency (us). Otherwise...("off with his head"-Wizard of Iz)

That's true
but we're both more of short game specialists. I once parred the short course at Chabot using nothing but my 9 iron. I couldn't reach the 170 yard 3rd green in one, but I could still par that one pretty routinely with the 9 and from there on out, it was smooth sailing.

More recently, though, I came to be more in love with my 7 iron.

I still miss Ramon
And then there's Ramon Hernandez of the San Diego Padres, a former All-Star with the Oakland A's. Hernandez is hitting .280 with seven homers and 32 RBIs and has been terrific defensively and behind the plate, working hard to turn the Padres' pitching staff into one of the best in the league.

is if Milton Bradley and Jeff Kent get in a fistfight, and Depo decides to ship off Kent because the Dodgers are going nowhere fast anyway.  I could see that happening, but then we'd be stuck with the wannabe redneck for awhile.  But at least he can hit.

I can genuinely say that I cheer every time he hits a hard line drive to the outfield.  Even if it's a lineout.  Most of his hits seem like infield hits.

Signing Rhodes and Redman, or trading them for Kendall? At least we were able to move Redman and Rhodes; from what I've seen of Kendall so far, good luck getting somebody to take on that contract Billy.
