Dan Johnson Cometh

I guess DJ has gotten the call.  He will take Durazo's place on the roster as Ruby is placed in the DL with his bad elbow.  I hope DJ gets some immediate playing time.  Why not?  we cannot get worse, so let the kids play.  I do not know what this might mean for Hatteberg's future, but if he is not long for the white shoes, I hope he finds a comfortable home whre the folks dont care about his D and appreciate his PPA.

Here is to hoping that that hot streak continues into the summer.

DJ
he won't come up until halfway point. at this point the season is lost so why lose a year of arbitration for one month of play?

DJ becomes eligible for Free Agency, he'll be 30+ years of age.  Not a big deal to lose a year of arbitration.

He threw a ball
From the A's official site.  Apparently his arm was not used to throwing a ball.  What a joke.
-----
ST. PETERSBURG -- As the losses pile up for Oakland, the speed at which players recover from injuries becomes increasingly important. Especially when the list of ailing players is long.
On Thursday Erubiel Durazo was added to the banged up list. Durazo, who played a game in the field for the first time this season last weekend at San Fransisco, was not available for Thursday's game against Tampa Bay due to soreness in his left elbow. A's manager Ken Macha said he wasn't sure if Durazo overworked the arm in the batting cages.

"He's been getting treatment on it for a few days now," Macha said. "It got to the point where [head trainer] Larry [Davis] thought a day off would help."

Davis said the injury came from the throwing it took to get ready for the game in the field.

Bobby Crosby, who left a rehab assignment in Class A Stockton when he heard his father was in intensive care at a hospital in Southern California, is expected to join Triple-A Sacramento this weekend. Davis said the plans are set through Sunday and the team will reevaluate the shortstop then.

Pitcher Rich Harden, on the 15-day DL with an oblique strain, played catch for the second time. His injury will likely require a future rehab assignment, Davis said.

This team is full of a bunch of...
Glass Joe's this season.  So many injuries in so little playing time.  Historically, outside one or two players being hurt (Hudson one year, Mulder the other, Dye forever), the A's have enjoyed relative health as a team.  We are just spoiled, I suppose...

throwing a ball while practicing (gasp) playing an actual defensive position...

What next  ???!!!

Please tell me that Kendall's elbow can withstand a throw all the way to second on the fly (if that event should somehow occur)...and that Charles Thomas' hand can take the sting if a pitch should one day hit the bat...

Where's Rod Serling when you need him?

Let's expand on that, Nico...

Eric Byrnes injuring his throwing hand by actually catching a fly ball with two hands.

Adam Melhuse injuring his knee by getting off the bench.

Eric Chavez injuring his hand after getting high fives from everybody in the dugout after a huge clutch home run.

Any other suggestions?

Yes and no
Yes he deserves it, but the season is lost.  I'd prefer to wait until after the break to call him up to delay that abitration clock.  If he's as good as he seems he's going to be a big part of the A's for a while so lets keep him affordable as long as we can.

Hey...yeah that's a great idea..DJ is only 25...he'll be 26 later this year....shit, let's just wait another year.If we wait long enough maybe we'll REALLY be able to keep him long term since he'll be in his early 30's and on the decline by the time he can be a free agent.

Johnson
If Dan Johnson is coming, he's playing full-time.  Otherwise, they would have promoted Cust to play DH and preserved the arbitration year.

Johnson has nothing left to prove in Sacramento.  He's not a kid anymore.  I don't see any great reason to save the arbitration year.  But he's got to play.  Every day.  Even if he doesn't hit a lick for weeks.

The A's need to know what they have in Johnson, and whether what I assume to be their doubts about him are justified.

hey if DJ
can put the ball in play and score us some runs then i could care less about the arby clock(he's damn near 26 it has to start sometime).  Plus, if is he helps us scores some runs then maybe we start winning some of the close games. And, i believe if we get that one spark plug to get things going it could spread within the team.

Props
to Elephants in Oakland and to mikedaviswhereareyou for bringing the news here.

One suggestion to Blez:  Don't make it too obvious about who people's sources are, especially when they are other people's sources.  It might make them gun-shy the next time.

I have never seen Johnson play, and am awfully curious at this point.  As I said above, Johnson needs to play every day for a month so he has a chance and so the team has an idea of what it's got.  I don't care who sits, even after Durazo is healthy enough to return.  My assumption, though, is that a healthy Durazo would play instead of Hatteberg.

by bear88 on May 27, 2005 1:51 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

great news if true
Forget this season, Crosby will be back in a week or two, Swisher has three months of playing time, get DJ in there for 3 months and let's see what we have.  Hell, I would put Thomas in left for a week or two and see if he is a complete bust or not, we have to find these things out this year so we don't go through the same pains next year with a whole lot of players we think are major leaguers but who are not.  I don't think Thomas is, so if he isn't, find out right now, and if not, ship him out fast, and bring up Cust.  And just remember, we are playing for a very low draft pick next year.  We do have some tradeable players so might get some help there also.

Keep DJ at DH
I agree with most of AN in hoping DJ hits bigtime with the A's. But from what I've seen of him, it would be best to keep him at DH. It's appropriate that "Madagascar" is open just as DJ is called up because when you watch him in the field, he resembles a water buffalo and makes Hatte, even on his worst days, look like a gazelle. In a couple of games I've witnessed, DJ bears a likeness on D to the worst firstbaseman I've ever seen, Dick Stuart--Dr. Strangeglove. I'm not sure that even our so-called miracle worker, ole Wash & Dry, can make pearls out of that sow's ear...

So give DJ Durazo's 15 DL days to hit and if he doesn't, bench him and hope Ruby returns to form. Of course, if DJ hits as we hope he will, then BB should send The Holy Flail packing.

DJ's Hitchcock Curse
In Johnson's first game, I'm expecting him to be mysteriously attacked by a murder of crows or blackbirds.

Then he'll miss the plane, have to take a bus from Cleveland across Illinois, stop and disembark in a corn field, and get hit by an errant crop-duster.

When he finally gets back on the bus, the bus will detour through Phoenix and then into the Sierras in California, where DJ will be stabbed in the shower by a momma's-boy innkeeper.

Finally, he'll arrive in the Bay Area, where he'll delude himself into thinking that he's the reincarnation of his maternal great-grandfather, the slugging Philadelphia A's 1B Carlo Valdes, and then he'll jump into the bay under the GG Bridge. After being fished out of the water by another team's scout who's been tailing DJ (played by Tom Hanks), Johnson will be pushed out of the tower at San Juan Bautista by Billy Beane, who will then call up a DH/1B who looks suspiciously like Johnson's double.

AAA pitching ain't Big League pitching.  Dan Johnson is not the cure for all that ails this team.  Remember how sure you were that the moment Swisher came back he'd turn the team around in the direction of Nirvana.

Take the emotion out....
As previously stated, just because someone does well in AAA does not in any way mean they will be a stud in the bigs.

The A's farm system hasn't exactly been fruitful when it comes to guys who can pound the ball to say the least.

Look at Nick Swisher. He's supposed to be a great prospect but at this young point in his career I just don't see it yet.

How many guys do you know who run into a wall on a play they have no chance to make and then put themselves out of action for a few weeks?

Folks, it doesn't happen too often.

Kendall leadoff ...
good to see.
The next time I slap a guy's ass, can we all just assume it's because I wish I was a baseball player?

THANKS
Stuck here at work, and it is such a tomb, I don't get any radio service!  And I'm not supposed to be online, but. . . I have to keep up with the current situation!!

I loathe DJ ... we haven't won a single game
... with him in the lineup yet !!!

... just kidding, I hope the kid breaks a leg (figuratively, NOT literally) !! ;}

Kotsay
has always said he doesn't like batting leadoff, so it isn't surprising to see him 2d.

Nice to see
that they (Kotsay & Kendall) got listened to.  Seriously, what can changing the line-up hurt at this point?!?

I am glad to see it!  I hope it will work out for us.

It's kind of offensive...
to put too much into the "Don't Start The Arbitration Clock Too Early" point into personnel decisions.

I go to games, and watch them. Should I stop until the clock starts for when the team is ready to put its best players on the field?

Winning games is hard enough without playing accountant on the number of days of MLB service. If DJ's ready, he's ready. Period.

And finally, put yourself in the employee's shoes. Would this excuse do anything for you while you were spending your life in the minors?
