Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Matt Lawton?

Hearing somewhere that Lawton will almost certainly be traded by the Pirates by the trading deadline, I'm wondering why not to us?(well, besides the obvious reasons).

I don't know what his contract looks like, but I know he hits for power, has speed and good defense.

He could be just what we need.

The question is, what do we give up for him? (or Kearns, or whoever). Will BB trade for a proven player to make this year's team better?

Your thoughts, please.

Should of had in in the off season now.....
First I full supported the Redman/rhodes deal until I heard that Rhodes was being traded for Lawton, as for a while I have really liked this kid.

Now however I really can't see him being an upgrade to our outfield. Kielty is out performing anyones expectations but even when he comes down a bit he should be able to put up Lawton type numbers, 771 OPS. Kotsay clearly will stay above 771 and I think a Byrnes/ Swisher Platoon should top a 771 OPS.

Thus have a hard time giving up anything of value for him. Now if the injury bug continues to bite then he could be a of value but if the bug continues we are not going to contend this year in which case I would be opposed to trading any prospects.

The next time I slap a guy's ass, can we all just assume it's because I wish I was a baseball player?

Wow, we're really slumming it ...
Lawton has hit 20 homers exactly twice in his 10 year career is that what counts for power these days? Despite having good patience, his OPS hasn't reached .800 since 2000. He does not hit for a high average and he has decent speed, but is not a quality base stealer. He actually sounds quite a bit like the guy who started the season for us in RF ... only Lawton has zero upside and makes nearly $8m.

Lawton is a joke
I live in ohio and my brother is an indians fan so i'm very familiar with Mr Lawton. My brother was THRILLED when the tribe finally found a taker for Lawton in the pirates. The guy is perhaps the worst outfielder in the majors. Definitely has the weakest arm. And most of the damage he does offensively comes at unimportant times. In other words his stats are padded by meaningless hit and homers in blowout losses.
