Just finished Aces today. Pretty good book, I want one of these kind of books every year after the season. I felt the chapter, "Hold 'em or Fold 'em?" was particulary poignant and was very sad. It made me depressed after reading it.  But it was still a great book for A's fans.

Network Associates Stadium: Former home of the 'Fear Mecir' sign.

by dboysick on Apr 6, 2005 6:09 PM PDT reply actions

He always walked at a decent rate
Down in AAA. My theory is that, last year, he felt his only shot at landing a job was to hit for average so some other team would want him down the road. He knew that with Ellis returning and Q in the minors, that his future was not in Oakland. However, this year I think he'll definitely try to walk more often.

by OaktownTribesman on Apr 6, 2005 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Scutaro looks like a different guy
OK, here's a thought: let's say Scutaro can get his OBP up around .350 or so, and proves he can do it in the next three weeks. When Crosby comes back, don't you put Scutaro at 2B?

by jrbh on Apr 6, 2005 6:10 PM PDT reply actions

no
Ellis would still be better all around. But it would make the choice between Ginter and Scutaro for back-up infielder harder.

Dotel would be
wasted for this game youth he must pitch soon.  Stick with Street or go with another just to use up staff

Street has 24 pitches...
... seems like that's plenty - I'd like to see Yabu get an inning in...

by RickeySteals on Apr 6, 2005 7:16 PM PDT reply actions

Put in Yabu
This might be a good place to use Yabu. Since he's taking up space on the roster, we have to use him for something.

Hey, Kielty had a better spring than Yabu, even with all the missed injury time.

I agree- it's Yabu time
and Kielty comes up and puts some nice wood on one.

Get him some work
He didn't pitch on Monday, and yesterday was an off day. They don't want him to get too rusty.

But maybe he is just trying to make things interesting -- like he did last year.

Hey, Karros and McLemore are calling the Arizona/Cubs game on ESPN2.  A little barely former A's action in the booth tonight.

should we get way too excited over this win?

I'm relieved that they hit
and pitched well. But we all know that Baltimore's pitching is not great.

So no, I'm not that excited. But if they do this to the Angels, Yanks, and/or RSux you can be sure that I'll be excited.

Hey, Alaska-A, what part of SE are you from?  I grew up in Ketchikan (Kay-Hi '93).

Huh, what are the odds of two A's fans from K-town (although I don't live there now)?

Albany
I live in Albany, California now, which is just north of Berkeley and hence Oakland.  I can't claim to be a long distance A's fan, although since I'm about to move to Toronto, I soon will be.  But at least the A's will visit Toronto a few times a year.

by aconley on Apr 6, 2005 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok
I thought you were living in SE AK.  Right on.  Though I have never been to Toronto I have some acquaintenances (sp) from there and they love it.

I left about 12 years ago
I left after High School -- I was the last year before they tore it down and built the current one.  My parents still live in SE, but in Sitka now.  But we visit Ketchikan every year at Christmas, so that I can get my yearly rain fix.

by aconley on Apr 6, 2005 7:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Ha
ha, "rain fix", yep that's right.  I lived over on POW Island for ten years before moving to KTN four years ago.

by ak_A on Apr 6, 2005 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions

How did you become an A's fan?
Did you live down this way before that?  Becoming an A's fan on POW seems pretty random.  Especially because it was so hard to hear anything about games until a few years ago.

Incidentally, the rumor growing up was that Curt Schilling was born in Ketchikan.  The offical line is Anchorage, but there were always rumors it was actually in Ketchikan.  I'm not saying I believe them, but it would probably be the greatest claim to fame if it were true.

by aconley on Apr 6, 2005 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Well heck,
I am a third generation californite from sacramento originally.  Very few overt A's fans here though you see a hat now and then around here but far more Mariner fans.

fun game
What a night for the young guys. I must have been grinning from ear to ear the entire game. This is a proud night for the A's organization.

And I LOVE Street and Swisher.
