Crosby has cracked rib

http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20050406&c ontent_id=1001806&vkey=pr_oak&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak

Note also that Saarloos has been added.  Anyway, it's a good thing that we got Ginter after all, since having another infielder around is now necessary.  I guess Scutaro will take SS and Ellis 2nd, with Ginter backing up Ellis and Ellis backing up Scutaro?

This is actually kind of encouraging...

How did this happen?
Is this from the HBP he took about 1 week ago?

Ken Korach....
....mentioned that Crosby said it's in the exact same area the he got hit but i think it's still speculation at this point.

wow
That sucks. How do you get a stress fracture of your ribs? Ginter is in tonight's starting lineup, but I still expect we'll see Ellis most of the time. At least all three guys will get a shot at significant regular-season playing time, which might help sort out the situation for when Crosby comes back - which I hope is soon.

stress fracture
But this is a stress fracture. I wonder if he won't be ready earlier. They placed him on the 15 day DL, but that means little. I'm hoping he'll be ready by the 1st of May.

When I had stress fractures
in my legs it took about 3-4 weeks to heal. It should be quicker for him, since he won't be walking around on his daily.

That's good news
I was concerned that he had a more serious chronic problem with his back. this at least explains the pain.

you can get a stress fracture anywhere on your body. he probably aggravated the original injury from when he was hit by the pitch.

stress fracture
They vary a lot from case to case. My Friend had one along her shin but she still ran craws country. They can be more serious though and because it is in the ribs there will probably be a significant amount of pain and I don't think he will be back this week. But I am still hopeful for just a stint on the 15 day DL. BP is great with injuries and they will have a good in depth look at this in the next couple days. I will post it if no one else beats me to it.
This is better then say, a ruptured disk but still not exactly good news.

re: rib injuries
Generally speaking, whether it's a contusion(bruise), fracture or as noted stress fracture...these can cause pain for up to 6-8 weeks. The problem with the thoracic area is that with every breath he takes, he will feel discomfort. Ribs and intercostal muscles move with each respiration. Ribs interface with the thoracic vertebrae, and in these types of injuries, the pain can refer to his back.
As he heals, he can become more active as the discomfort will reduce with each passing week. There are things that can be done to get Crosby fuctional before that 6-8 week window, but factors such as swinging a bat will dictate how much pain he can tolerate.
   Let's hope he's a quick healer!

Just wondering...
Hey Gerard,

Are you a chiropractor?  Your comments sound like they come from that perspective.  If so, have you treated rib fractures before?

by Nick on Apr 6, 2005 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually...
I am a physician who trained at an osteopathic medical school. Within the specialty of family practice I treat a considerable amount sports related injuries ranging from football to golf.

A D.O.!
I live near Philly, which of course has the Philly College of Osteopathic Medicine (very close to my aikido dojo).  My PCP is a DO, and I really appreciate her approach (as well as the occasional adjustment).

Spring training fall?
I mentioned in another thread that I saw Crosby fall hard on his back and do an awkward back summersault during the last week of spring training. He was backpedalling for a pop up at the time. It sure looked like the sort of fall that could cause some injury.

Stress fractures do heal, however, so I guess it's not terribly bad news.

cracked ribs
man, I either bruised or cracked my rib once, and it hurt for a long time, and i wasn't hoping to swing a bat.

damn, that sucks for Crosby - I feel for the guy, and hope he gets better as quick he can>!

Good luck, Bobby!

It's not a good thing
but I was relieved to see it, especially after reading the stories in today's papers.

Ribs heal, and then they're fine.  Bad backs are a chronic problem.

Also, on the bright side, Crosby's absence will give the other players (Ellis, Ginter and Scutaro) a chance to show their stuff.  We should have a decent idea who deserves to stay by the time Crosby returns.

With Harden and Crosby sidelined
We now get a chance to see how Oakland has improved its organizational depth...and youth (heal faster). Nobody likes to see injuries. but they can and do happen, and I think Billy has worked hard to make sure that the team can  handle them and keep playing well throughout the season.

Cracked ribs in the back are dicey
could be 4 weeks.  He's young and strong, which will help him way more than any PT.  PT generally won't do anything for this type of injury at first, just time to heal.  The bad news is that if there is damage to the soft tissue or intercostal ligaments, it could linger (as in all season).  That would be more likely in the case of a stress fracture, which I do not believe any more than Jerry Rice's cracked patella was unrelated to his knee surgey (from which his patellar tendon was harvested!)  Two big extenuating circumstances are that he can't do anything to maintaining fitness for at least 3 weeks (again, issue minimized since he's young) and the motion of swinging a baseball bat, especially his swing, will keep sidelined longer than many other activities would.  From what I have read, 6 weeks sounds optimistic - I'd expect 10.

I meant ...
that "stress fracture unrelated to being hit in the back" is BS.
