is it safe to be an optimist yet?

Somehow someway we are still tied with everyone else for 1st in the division despite the fact that our offense has been the worst in the league all year.  Our offense can only go up from here... if either Chavy or Durazo catches fire we can win a few (and would have won a lot of the last few games). If we can just stay around .500 until the July trades, then anything can happen.

The best news is long-term. We came into the year knowing our offense would be average (that's what the track record said), but not knowing much about the pitching. Well, the news is our new starters are doing waaay better than we could have hoped for. If Blanton, Haren and Richard IV keep this up, they will easily replace last year's Big Three. To me, this is the best news of all, because we are going to live or die over the next few years by (1) how fast those guys grow up and (2) how fast Swisher, Ellis and Crosby grow up.

So yes, our offense has been a nightmare (tonight excepted). But they will come around and be at least average. If our pitching can hold up, then we have a real shot this year.

ps. how the heck does Blanton do it? How far can you get with so-so stuff and great location?
