I believe that the last two A's captains have been Lansford and D.Murphy. I think that it is time that the A's named a new captain and I think that they should be co-captains.
Everything went wrong in the game tonight (last night) against the white sox and both Kotsay and Kendall were a large part of a comeback that led to an important win for us. If we would have lost it would have been crushing to the team's spirit. It would have been easy for team to just stick its collective head between its collective legs and hide. But at the end of the nightmare inning Kotsay came up with a good play, taking charge of a fly ball to right center and making a clutch throw to home. This was the play of the night in my mind. Both he and Kendall were part of A's rallys also.
But it isn't just last night that makes me want to say this. Kotsay has always exuded effort in every way. He seems like he is a take charge type he will step up when the stakes are down.
The same can be said about Kendall. He has been that for his whole career and I am very excited to have him here in Oakland. Both of them also do everything fundamentally properly which is something that leaders have to do to be an example to younger players.
One thing that I can think of that would stand in the way of their captainship would be the fact that they are not likely to be around for all that long. I hope that Kotsay gets signed to a deal but that might not be likely. Kendall might not be around after next year. I also don't think that Beane would be big on naming a player captain....
What does athletics nation think of this?
