A couple thoughts from Gammons...
From this afternoon's chat:
Steve (Bay Area): Peter, can I expect any quality starts out of Barry Zito this year? How does someone in their mid-20's lose velocity?
Peter Gammons: (4:30 PM ET ) Last year, Barry had lost a lot of weight and did not have good velocity. This spring, he threw as well as he did in 2000 and 2001, so I would think that he will come around and have a good season.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eric (El Cerrito, CA): What do you expect from the A's in 2005?
Peter Gammons: (4:32 PM ET ) I think Oakland CAN contend. I think Haen, Harden and Zito will combine for better numbers than Hudson, Mulder and Zito did last year -- and their bullpen is MUCH improved. The question is their offense, they desparately need Bobby Clark back, because they have no alternative.
So he thinks we'll be fine, but I don't know how much we should listen to him after that "Bobby Clark" reference... :-P

What Do You Disagree With?
The part about the bullpen being much improved?
The part about the offense struggling?
Seems pretty accurate to me.
But the "Suck it" line is classy.

deep space homer is by far the best
the only real dispute is over the second best episode: cape feare, last exit, king size homer, 22 short films, bart of darkness, homer the great, etc...

We see things differently..
2) Has to be the chilli pepper contest that results in a 10 minute acid trip by homer.....classic.
Your list is solid, don't get me wrong, just would change the top two.

union boss = "last exit to springfield"
the episode name is a parody of last exit to brooklyn by the author of requiem for a dream.

I've gotta go with
- 22 Short Films
- Last Exit to Springfield
- Homer the Great
- The one where Homer thinks Bart is gay ... blanking on the name
- Much Apu About Nothing ... not so much for the episode as a whole, but because it typifies the brilliance of having a 3 minute intro that has nothing at all to do with the actual story blend seamlessly into the plot. The first few minutes are the best intro ever, though.

Our 4s and 5s
Will Blanton be better than 2004 Harden? Doubtful. Will Saarloos/Meyer be better than Redman? Maybe, maybe not.

Harden-Haren-Zito or Hudson-Mulder-Zito?
Combined with the revamped bullpen and the 2005 ERA will be lower than 2004 ERA and in 2004 the A's were 2nd in the AL.
Elementary my dear CFan!
Tweak the A's D & Offense and you have a winner!
(BB & Wolff & co have a bit of work remaining though)

Um...who's Bobby Clark
I agree that Bobby needs a quick recovery, but fractured ribs are pretty nasty. And wow, this guy is quite the optimist. Harden definitely has the stuff to be part of the next big 3, and if Barry turns it around then there's two. I guess the variable is Haren. I'm sure they are all good enough to be the Next Big Three....but better than Zito/Mulder/Hudson? Guess we'll have to see.
