Offense comments
First, Diary...
Yes, it is early, but...
OBP/SLG/BA
Kotsay .438/.483/.379
Ellis .467/.429/.429
Hatty .385/.500/.333
Scutaro .348/.350/.250
Chavez .355/.375/.208
Kotsay is a stud.
Ellis is making his comeback.
Hatteberg is showing why Spring Training doesn't mean that much.
Scutaro is proving he really did learn to take pitches in the off season.
Chavez isn't getting pitches to hit.
Durazo has to start hitting again. Make teams pay for putting Chavez on at a clip .150 higher than he is hitting.

My thoughts
Buster Olney has this to say about the A's in his latest blog entry:
"Oakland got pounded, 10-3, as Eric Hinske ripped into them, and the small sample of games indicates the Athletics may have trouble consistently generating runs."
Well, maybe. We've certainly have had offense issues at times during the last two years. Here is where our hitters are at in this young season:
(Numbers are at bats, BA, OBP, SLG, and OPS)
Mark Kotsay 29 .379 .438 .483 .920
Jason Kendall 28 .250 .276 .250 .526
Nick Swisher 26 .192 .222 .423 .645
S. Hatteberg 24 .333 .385 .500 .885
Eric Chavez 24 .208 .355 .375 .730
E. Durazo 24 .167 .259 .167 .426
Eric Byrnes 22 .227 .292 .500 .792
Marco Scutaro 20 .250 .348 .350 .698
Keith Ginter 15 .133 .278 .533 .811
Mark Ellis 14 .429 .467 .429 .895
Bobby Kielty 10 .000 .091 .000 .091
C. Thomas 7 .000 .222 .000 .222
Here's what will likely happen:
Kotsay: slight decrease in offensive performance.
Kendall: large increase overall. There is no way he will carry anything close to a .276 OBP throughout the season.
Hatteberg: decrease. He typically carries an OPS in the .700s.
Chavez: large increase. His BA, OBP, and SLG suggest he is slumping right now.
Durazo: large increase. Same reasoning. I don't think Durazo has had any extra-base hits.
Byrnes: slight increase in OBP.
Scutaro: probably not much change overall.
Ginter: increase in OBP, and maybe a slight decrease in slugging.
Ellis: large decrease in performance.
Kielty and Thomas: large increases for both. Even Kielty won't have these numbers for long.
Team Stats: 248, .238 .314 .363 .677
Opposing team: 227 .242 .317 .374 .691
The good news is that I think what we can reasonably expect to see is a lot of upside from our offense as the season progresses. We're experiencing some early bumps, but naysayers predicting offensive doom are saying nay too soon. The season has just begun.
(BTW: has anyone noticed that Damian Miller is leading the NL in batting at .471?)
