Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Arizona

Hey -- we're headed down to Phoenix this weekend to see the A's play.  It's my first time going to see the Elephants play in the desert and I'm wondering if anyone on the Nation has good ideas for places to hit after the games.

We're looking for good bars with A's crowds (read: if I see some donkey ass in a Barry Bonds jersey or a Kirk Gibson jersey at my bar, I'll probably toss a barstool at his forehead).  We are also looking for restaurant suggestions, bars, watering holes, taverns, pubs, corner stores (where you can buy alcohol), kegs lying on the side of the street and anywhere else where I might be able to get a beer, while sitting next to a fellow in green and gold.

Let me know if you've got any good ideas.  Maybe we'll see you down there.  I'll be the one lying face down on the bar with my credit card hanging out of the elastic of my boxers.

actually
if you go back to post #36 there are some suggestions for you.

good luck, have fun, and take pictures of all ballgames and drunken stupidness.

AZ
I went down to AZ this past weekend, and it was my first time too. I'm not aware of any "A's crowd" gathering place other than at the ballpark or at the minor league complex. Anywhere you go there's bound to be mixed crowd; I guess it's just the nature of ST. I actually went out on two nights and didn't see any A's gear. Come to think of it, I didn't see ANY sports gear whatsoever aside from the occasional ASU hoodie. Maybe it's because I didn't hit any sports bars, just a brewpub, a college bar, and a nightclub.

My site has some suggestions...

I went last year and listed places that I liked. McDuffys and the Library (both in Tempe) are total A's fan hangouts. Avoid Scottsdale if you do not want to see Bonds jerseys.

But, if you want a kickarse steak and to see the best collection of baseball memorabilia West of Cooperstown, then I suggest Don & Charlies in Scottsdale. (There is a cool story about our party there last year, dining next to Bud-Head Selig)

Late night style
"The Library" in Tempe. It's near the Hooters. Books all over the wall, girls in school girl outfits. Good times.
Network Associates Stadium: Former home of the 'Fear Mecir' sign.

heh
Why haven't I seen this place on Insomniac?  Better question, why haven't I seen this place in person

answers to my own questions
if this isn't evidence that I talk to myself extensively, I don't know what is...anyway, for question #1, I don't think Dave Attell has ever made it out to the Phoenix area (apparently too busy hanging out with male strippers in crime-plagued Baltimore (as well as with ghost-stalkers in the suburbs if I remember correctly, although that may have been in a similarly boring city such as, eh, Memphis)...guess there really is nothing going for Baltimore outside of Camden Yard and Carmelo Anthony), and for question # 2, well, I'm 3000 miles away.  Maybe spring training 2006, or if I decide to challenge Steve Nash to a pickup soccer game.  Probably have to win a contest to earn the right to the latter, heh

Actually
Attell did do a Phoenix episode. Having spent 5.5 yrs at ASU, I can safely say that it wasn't a good episode and he really didn't show any of the good spots. He went to a random apartment party and a nudist colony out in BF Arizona.

typical Attell
you do have to give the man credit for being willing to hit, eh, unusual local places

I'll cut him some slack
I saw him do stand-up in SF last year, and he was one of the funniest people I've ever heard in my life.

I put him...
right after Dane Cook on my list.  Missed my chance to see Dave live around here, but I've seen footage of his stand-up, and obviously I'm an Insomniac fan...yeah he's hilarious.  The guy can make any situation funny.
and, oh, he's not a comedian, but if you've never heard Wesley Willis, well, he's in a class by himself.

Weird
Dane Cook is #1, Attel #2 on my very short list as well. Surprisingly, Lewis Black comes in at #3 right now. I used to hate him on the Daily Show, but I have the Sirius satellite, they have a stand up channel....some of his stuff is reall fing good.

As far as Wesley, my college roommate had a bunch of his stuff downloaded. The Batman song was always good to throw on at 4 am and just trip people out at the party.

lol
glad to see it.  That whole bit about NASCAR is classic.  I saw Dane live on January 28th (yeah, I remember the date, it was a big day, just like March 20th was the day that Wesley always came to Buffalo (three years in a row...gotta stop the double parentheses))...tickets were free for students at my college.  They were gone in like 10 minutes.  Best thing UB's ever done.  Anyway, my friend had my ticket, so I'm standing outside the theater, surrounded by people looking for tickets, offering $50 or more.  No tickets were actually sold, mind you.  So I'm getting nervous, it's about 5 minutes before the start, everyone else is inside...finally my friend walks up.  He sees the crowd of people looking for tickets, so he holds up my ticket like he's going to scalp it.  Everyone's busting out their wallets, shouting out prices auction-style...then he gives me the ticket.  People were really pissed off, "what did he do to get the ticket"...great way to start the show.  Dane was hilarious; he did the Price Is Right stuff some of which I'd heard before (talking about the old women coming really close to getting their heads caught in the wheel when they spin it), otherwise it was all new material.  He's the man.

"it makes you so mad you want to punch a baby...and not just an awake baby, they can squirm away...a SLEEPING baby..."

Bars
I also recommend Dos Gringos and Gilligan's. Both have good crowds.

by Tony on Mar 9, 2005 12:55 PM PST reply actions

Ditto again
To Dos Gringos, Ive posted about this place in earlier diaries.  I went to ST for the first time last year and had a blast at Dos Gringos.

More places to eat...
Not the bar scene but good food/drinks:
the Teepee on Indian School Road ($); Los Somberos ($)on N. Scotsdale; Roaring Fork (great food and exceptional desserts, $$$) in Scotsdale.
Lots of bars in/around Scotsdale Drive - quite the scene..Pink Pony and  Don and Charlies are the "legendary" sportsbars/restaurants..
Not much choice of food at ballpark..you might want to take something in with you.
Have fun..wish I was going back again right away.
