Time to update AN?

Since the new season is just around the corner, I thought it would be a good time to discuss any potential updates to the site.  Awhile back people talked about having box scores, or some scoring type system on the site that we could follow all season long.  Basically something unique that we couldnt easily get from yahoo sports or anything like that.

Another idea I had was updating AN user account info.  When you post comments it could show on the left side a little bio such as when you became a member, where your from, total number of posts, maybe a picture of something along with your tag line.

Another idea mentioned was a place to put pictures, or any other media that could be possible.  Im not sure what the server status is of AN, but Id be down to donate some money to help defray some of the time/cost of things.

AN is the best sports blog site out there, but theres always things that could make it better.  What do you think?

What I would like to see
is the ability to edit posts.

Nah
then we don't get to weed out the non-speelers and bad-grammarists.

YES!!!!
I want the ability to edit when I are using poor grammers and spelling.

by kvn on Mar 31, 2005 3:53 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

We just added the ability
to edit diaries yesterday.  We're one step ahead :-)

But there isn't any way to edit comments.  Sorry.

Trust me, I have contacted them
but I haven't heard anything back.  I've even tried my other media sources by several of them have the day off.

What about a spell check?

get thee a Mac...
... and you can have spell check for everything you type in your browser. Or, I'm sure there's a FireFox plugin somewhere that can do the same thing.

by RickeySteals on Mar 31, 2005 4:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep, safari...
There's a preference somewhere (I'm at work, so I'm not in front of my mac) where you can have it automatically spellcheck everything typed into a textarea. It may be a system wide setting (as opposed to just safari), I'm not sure...

Or, I believe there's a spellcheck service where you can select any text and use the service to spellcheck it. I think both have been available since 10.2, but for sure they're around in 10.3.

Blez, ........A couple ideas;
1. A choice of viewing diaries as
  • Newest to oldest (The current option)
  • Most popular to least popular. Recent diaries  posted within a 2-4 week span or the current month. Helps drop weak postings out of view.
  • Any month; 1, 2, 3, or (?) years ago. Since our baseball past time is cyclical it is fun to re-visit the dealings, rosters, AN reactions to similar past events. It will be fun looking back on the current activities of AN and new A's ownership in the years soon to come!
2. Search AN Function;
  • by date
  • player
  • person
  • topic
  • subject
3. Game audio
  • live via AN so we can comment on live games, while (live) on AN! The ST "webcasts" of games by ANers was great
  • Option for "text" of the audio or sound or both.
  • Choice of local or visiting team broadcast of course!!!
4. Audio option;
  • "comments to diaries' (Computer voice?)
  • AN interviews. (Recorded interview).
6. AN & A's: attending of A's games by AN "en masse"
  • game of the week?
  • games of the month?
  • AN Tail gate party?
  • AN Group commutes?
  • AN Bleecher's Day?
  • Mt Davis Day?
  • pregame or post game visits with players? BB? others?
7. AN "Pac Bell Day";
  • "Ferry to the Barry" Day?
  • 1st annual "AN Swarming" to support A's Vs Gnats at PacB.
Wow!
Got Late!
Gotta go!

How about
7. AN "Pac Bell Day";

Oh c'mon, Captain,
there isn't that manny of them.

I'd enjoy a "bio page" where you could see each member's pic, age, city, and credit card number. OK, but at least the first three.

I like my anonymity
Am I a 32-year-old woman in Oakland?
Am I a 14-year-old boy in Israel?
Am I a 67-year-old man on death row?
Am I too damn shy to show up for AN day this summer?
Am I Billy Beane?
Actually, I'm Bobby Crosby and I can't see a damn thing.

Baker, this is sounding eerily
like my last experience with online dating.

As for the notion of Crosby being blind, it reminds me of my childhood, when my dad caught me masturbating and warned me, "Son, if you do that, you'll go blind," to which I replied, "Dad, I'm over here."

Beat it!
This forum should not be used by its members to discuss the root of self-gratification.  I suggest you shuffle your humor on over to another thread - another thread that could use a comedic hand to stimulate it along.

hear, hear
I have enough trouble being myself in the real world. Can't I be an A's fan and simply an A's fan on AN?

It might be nice
to have someplace where we can glance at the stats of our AL West competitors.

by kvn on Mar 31, 2005 3:59 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

ANTV
The most logical step: ANTV! Instead of Blez posting just photos and transcripts of interviews, he can capture his A's-centric life, AN outings and meetings, player and staff interviews, etc, all on video and put it up here. It's blogging meets reality television.

spycams!
we can even put them in the clubhouse for GnGGirl...or is she too young for that?

Instead of ANTV
Why not Radio. There are many Web-Radio stations out there. Hell, a forum I used to admin on had one on 3 seperate occasions (though the first two died to server meltdowns, both problems not having to do with the Radio).

Why not do an AN Radio with a bit of music or whatever, some taped Interviews, try to get some old games on it maybe. Or have someone man it live. Hell, you could even have someone do the Play by Play on it during the games for those who dont have access to the game on TV or Radio, and I guess are too cheap to get MLB.Radio.

It's all about the image
Radio might be a good idea, but remember that many of us belong to the MTV generation that will only listen to radio as sort of a last resort.

And BTW I don't think MLB would be too happy about AN doing play by play broadcasts of games without paying for the rights.

by OaktownTribesman on Mar 31, 2005 5:25 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, we arn't selling it
but I mean more like what we are already doing with the gameday threads, just having someone speak it over a webfeed. Considering the feed will hold somewhere between 10-40 people at best, I dont think there will be a huge drain on the MLB.com financial budget. Especialy since this will mainly be used by those who cant hear the Pro's playbyplay it.

Still
I think Blez will be asked to "cease and desist". People have been threatened by lawsuits for lesser things.

by OaktownTribesman on Mar 31, 2005 5:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

And everything I've heard about MLB
is that they are absolutely fanatical about their properties.  That's why the official logo has completely disappeared.

How 'bout something simple
the ability to access other diaries from within one.

BTW how come the posting time is about 10 minutes fast?

Other ideas
How about an AN chat room? Though then I would have even less of a life than I already do...

To compelement that, how about a an AN "A's Game Date" service so those of us spending too much time in the AN chat room can try to get a life?

And how about more coverage for our prospects and minor league teams, maybe in collaboration with Brian Durack and Bobby Lee.

I like the idea
of a Chatroom, and especialy the idea of being able to access the Recent Diary list from within diarys. Makes it so you dont have to constantly return to the main page to go to a new diary.

How about a Roster Diary area?
How about a separate Diary Area that lists the roster. Then when you click on the link, at the top of the page you get a basic chart of stats, then below it a diary area anyone can post in. The diaries wouldn't pop up in the main diary area but would be off on their own so that if we want to check up on a specific player, we can go into their page and read recent posts about the guys. This roster page would also have a list of guys in the organization but not on the team so that if we wanted to check up on a guy like Quintanilla we could.
