The Affects of a new Stadium

I have a cold today, so no work.

But I began reading an article mentioning a new stadium coming along with our new ownership group.

http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/sports/baseball/mlb/oakland_athletics/11256301.htm

Then theres this quote at the end.

"As for Wolff, he's expected to devote himself primarily to finding a new stadium. The A's lease with McAfee Coliseum expires after the 2007 season (the team has three one-year options after that), and Wolff was brought into the A's organization in November 2003 to oversee the club's efforts to secure a new venue."

"The stadium issue is going to be the major focus of this ownership group," Young (A's PR guy) said. "But that's no surprise there."

Anyways I started thinking, what could this mean to the A's.  We have a payroll of what $55-60 million.  Now a mere 15% increase in profits per year, with the team we already have in place, and the others in the minors with potential, I see few more trades needed, other then the current high dollar contracts already on hand, for any significant moves for at least 5 years.

2010

After our three one year options and the lease running out in 2007, we get, 2010.

15% at that point will end up being more like 18-19. Money able to keep contracts on hand that are wanted, ie Chavy, who will be in his last year of his contract, added to the increased revenue, we can resign people like Harden, Blanton, Crosby, Swisher, Haren, Meyer, you name it.  We can have a set core for the next 10 years.

I believe this sort of logical opportunity has already been thought up by BB, at least setting us up for a great run when maturity hits.

Summary

Increase fan attention, means increase in revenues.
New stadium, with a good view of the Oakland Hills, again, means increase in revenues.

Higher payroll.

More money to play with.

This year, 05 may be a transition, we may be great, we may have a few rookies show why they call them that, but we have the tools put together to move and transition seamlessly for the next ten years.  Like I said, Majors and Minors.

And of course this is a highly optimistic view of the A's current standing, but the mere fact that we are in this position is a result of the intellect of BB.  Long-term.  Of course there will be trades taking part during those last years, cause BB needs to have some fun.

I recall reading that the A's only pay 500K
to lease the current stadium.

I doubt that they would realize any real revenues while paying off a 400 - 500 million dollar stadium.

40,000 seats is what they are talking
maybe 15 years of payments

Saint is correct. A's enjoy extremely low rent at the moment and when that changes the tickets are going up quite a bit. (Compare other sportrs venues)

When it comes to building stadiums and casinos , only the builder is assured of making a profit for sure.

The construction companies doing all the "Indian" casinos are quite happy.
They are probably the same fellas
doing the stadiums and entertainment complexs

Yep, and Woff is a builder!!!
There is alot more here than meets the eye. It is a good thing that a Bay Area company like Gap is buying the team and is holding the highest interest.

Will they stay in Oakland?
The thought of them going to San Jose makes me queasy. :(

send the Raiders to San Jos
the 49ers don't own territorial rights there.

Tear down Mt. Davis and give us our East Bay Hills view and ice plants back!!

(sigh! I can dream, can't I?)

Yeah...
someone call San Jose's mayor and find out if he would like the raiders instead(cuz the A's aren't moving.)
This is my "second" family

Uh, right...
There's still $180 million in debt outstanding on the Coliseum renovation project. Unless someone feels like cutting a check to pay off that debt, the Raiders aren't going anywhere.

Let's wait to hear the ballpark proposal before we prematurely say anything about the A's. I'm guardedly optimistic.

About having more revenue
If the A's ramp up ticket prices 15-20% on average, eliminate the Double Play Wednesday promotion, and bring in 2.5 million a season in a new ballpark, the A's could get an extra $20-30 million in revenue per year. But they also wouldn't receive the revenue sharing payment that they've been getting the last several years. When you factor that in with debt service on a privately-built park, it's a wash unless the A's can get other private, non-team sources to help foot the bill. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.

before we bash the collisseum
tickets are cheap and plentiful.  anybody who wants to go to an a's game can.  any game you can make it to, you  can get a ticket for.  that is not true of the giants and if a  new stadium comes around it woun't be true of the a's.  all the team needs is for the fans to come out and show the team love like they have done now for some time.  and more fans just like them.  what's to say that a new stadium would guarentee 3m fans a year.  i say people should quit their bitching and just enjoy the colliseum, which has seen as many world series as any stadium othher than the bronx in the last 30 years.

it would be nice if something could be done with the raiders, who are my team as well.  sorry, can't root for sf.
