Bonds out for year?

A dejected Barry Bonds said Tuesday that there's a chance he might not return this season because of multiple knee surgeries.

Bonds

"Right now I'm just going to try to rehab myself to get back to, I don't know, hopefully next season, hopefully the middle of the season. I don't know. Right now I'm just going to take things slow. I feel bad for the guys [Giants teammates] because I want to be out there for them," he said Tuesday after meeting with San Francisco Giants trainer Stan Conte for 1½ hours.

"I'm 40 years old, not 20, 30."

When asked directly if he said he might not be back until mid-season or next season, Bonds answered, "Maybe. I told you that before I left, remember? You thought I was joking."

The seven-time NL MVP, who returned to spring camp Tuesday on crutches following last week's surgery, made his remarks while sitting at a picnic table outside the Giants' clubhouse with his 15-year-old son, Nikolai, at his side.

While Bonds was defiant and confrontational during his first press conference of the spring Feb. 22, he was despondent Tuesday, using the word "tired" 14 times during his approximate 10-minute session.

" You wanted me to jump off the bridge, I finally have jumped. You wanted the bring me down, you've finally brought me and my family down. Finally done it. From everybody, all of you. So now go pick a different person. "
  -- Barry Bonds

"I really don't have much to say anymore," Bonds said. "My son and I just going to enjoy life. My family's tired. You guys [the media] wanted to hurt me bad enough, you finally got there.

"You wanted me to jump off the bridge, I finally have jumped. You wanted the bring me down, you've finally brought me and my family down. Finally done it. From everybody, all of you. So now go pick a different person. I'm done. Do the best I can, that's about it."

Asked if there was something specific he was talking about Bonds said, "Inner hurt, physical, mentally. Done. I'm mentally drained. I'm tired of my kids crying. Tired."

Bonds originally underwent knee surgery on Jan. 31. Four days later he accidentally hit his knee on a table at SBC Park in San Francisco and the knee had periods of swelling. An MRI last week revealed further tears in the knee.

Conte said there was no way of knowing whether the incident on Feb. 4 caused further damage.

"And we don't care," Conte said. "We're starting with a clean slate. We'll try to get it right."

Bonds begins the season third on the career homers list with 703, trailing Babe Ruth (714) and Hank Aaron (755).

Last September, the Giants dropped a provision that would have allowed them to void Bonds' $18 million salary in 2006 if he failed to reach 500 plate appearances this year or 1,500 combined from 2003 to 2005, including at least 400 this year.

Is there anyone in baseball that is a bigger prick than Barry Bonds? Canseco isn't a prick; he's just an idiot.

by brownln on Mar 22, 2005 11:55 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Nah, Canseco's no idiot ...
He's a pariah, and a jerk, and he stutters, and he's not afraid to polarize people and ostracize himself.  He's an outspoken iconoclast, but if you ever listen to what he has to say, he's no idiot.
Bonds, on the other hand, if you listen to what he has to say, you end up confused.  He's not the smartest guy.

Well
at least they are a young team and weren't gearing up for a run at the title this year... oh, wait...

by pseudokiwi on Mar 22, 2005 11:55 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Just retire
Barry's gotta deal with all that stuff with his ex-gf plus all the steroid stuff. I wish he would just retire and not destroy that oh so magnificent home run record. Babe ruth was the man ,Hank Aaron had class ,but this guy is the biggest prick in sports and that's counting Kobe Bryant. I guess the Giants aren't going anywhere. it's ok because they invested wisely in young talent.... oh wait half of his team will have retired if he comes back next season.

What a great excuse
To not have to show how he does with steroid suspensions implemented.

Seriously
Between the injury and the legal stuff, he may already have played his last game.

Could Bonds Injury = A's in SJ?
If Bonds does an Albert Belle and doesn't officially retire, just takes all that money over the next few years without playing -- he's entitled to it, thanks to some incredibly bad decision-making by the Giants brass -- the Giants future depends on just exactly what they were able to talk an insurance company into.

If Bonds's salary is covered, no big deal. If it's not covered, and the Giants are on the hook for scores of millions of dollars to Bonds, $100M or $150M in "terroritorial rights" to San Jose might like mighty good to Magowan and co.

$100 to $150 mil for rights?
considering the Giants got the rights for free from us in the first place, wtf are you thinking.

You reap whay you sow...
It's funny how the Giants were gearing up for a championship run with all these old guys and now their most essential part is breaking down.  This can easily be the '04 Mariners redux.

I agree with Tribesman
I think Barry needs some time to get his system cleaned up and the knee injury is a convenient excuse. IF he actually tries to come back, you'll probably see the 185 pound streamlined Barry rather than the juiced up Barry.

Barry is typical of not just a lot of athletes but just Americans in general: not willing to take responsibility for their own words or actions. Its easier to blame someone else.

by nathan. on Mar 22, 2005 1:19 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Wow
The Giants just went from NL West favorites to being just a cut above Colorado.

by dchu on Mar 22, 2005 1:38 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Give the guy a break ...
He's got a 15 year-old son that has some pretty unpleasant shit to deal with.  I don't want my kids living in shame for who I am, and I doubt that Barry wants that for his kids either.  He has a wife that now feels like a doormat and a fool.  Maybe he loves her, and he's contrite.  He may be going to jail; he probably is depressed coming off of steroid withdrawal (or whatever you call it).  He has to answer the same relentless questions from the media.  His dad just died.
I do agree that what goes around comes around, but if I could put myself in his shoes, all that money couldn't buy happiness.  Life sucks for Barry Bonds right now.  I'm sure he will get what he deserves, but I'm not going to rejoice over it, and I'm not going to derive some perverse satisfaction from his fall from grace.

by iceplant on Mar 22, 2005 1:41 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I am for sure...
All of those things you mentioned (besides Bobby dying) he did to himself. This is the way he chose to lead his life. These are the goals he set for himself. Don't athletes who are so "great" deserve all of the scrutiny of what they do off the field too? I think so. This isn't about Lamar the ball player, its about Lamar the person, and from what I have seen he is a disgrace to his family, and his son, wife, et al, and all should be ashamed of him, not just his fans.

Why exactly
is it any of our business what "Lamar" the person does? The 'roids thing is certainly fair game, but other than that the only business he has with us is as a ballplayer.

I agree if...
it was 1950. Why do we care who Jenifer Aniston is dating or if PDiddy was at a party where Pam Anderson went skinny dipping? In this day and age we demand to know everything about someone we root for, believe in etc. It's not just me but society in general. Why are all these paparazi payed so much to harrass movie stars? Why is Pedro Gomez's sole job this year to report every action of Lamar? Because people want to know everything, because there is money in it? Not sure, but I can pick up any magazine and find out who Jeter is dating. Why can't I know about Lamar's financing his girlfriend illegally? Or that he is associated with Balco and uses their cream? In this day and age, not many ask why, they just ask for more.

Ok ... I agree ... people WANT to know ...
the preponderance of tabloids pretty much proves that. But that doesn't tell us anything at all about whether athletes "deserve" scrutiny for what they do off the field.

"Don't athletes who are so "great" deserve all of the scrutiny of what they do off the field too?"

My answer - athletes DESERVE only a small portion of what they receive, positive or negative.

So let him be a disgrace to his family ...
He has to reconcile that with or without your judgment.  How does it benefit anyone else to  celebrate his misery?

by iceplant on Mar 22, 2005 1:54 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Celebrating?
Hold on let me take off my party hat. In no way am I dancing in the streets, I am just commenting on that it is well over due for people to finally admit what a bad person this guy is. I have gotten that for a long time, and I hope that more light bulbs go off in people heads, or they pull the sticks out of the arses and realize they are rooting for phony.

the testing's not strong enough to...
keep Barry from using... He'll just manage his cycles accordingly, because he can/will be tipped off about when he'll be tested.

However, I do think he might be done.  He's mentally sick of being in the limelight.

I think he should have pulled a Steve Carlton years ago... been courteous but aloof to his teammates, and NEVER EVER TALK TO THE PRESS.  He would have been just as disliked as he is now, but he would have been a lot happier in the process.

by K56 on Mar 22, 2005 1:54 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

He says he might be done for good...
This from the MLB.com article on the giant's site:

Later, as he walked to his car in the parking lot, he told MLB.com that he was upset, clearly alluding to published reports of steroid rumors and the leaks of grand jury testimony in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO) case. "I might not be back at all," he said.

"I'm just going to go home and try to enjoy my family. I'm sick and tired of seeing them so upset," said Bonds, who has two years remaining on his current contract. "I'm done. Finished with it. Certainly, I'll be gone after 2006."

i can't say i'm surprised by this
the guy has serious personality issues that fails to permit any shred of reality into this his thinking.

don't be surprised if he never comes back and lives a resentmentful and bitter life always blaming "someone" else.

Recommend watching it
I just caught him on espn.com. I read his quotes, but seeing him say that to Pedro made me laugh out loud. Are we suppose to feel sorry for you Lamar? Man, do a round, get fired up again, get mad, jees, what a depressed man. I can see how a 16 year old couldn't handle the swings of the steriod withdrawl. Or is it the IRS called? Or the DA investigators called to get you for perjury? Uhm, ya get on with that life dude, and have a good time playing cards with Peterson and Jacko....

Good luck with your life, I for one will be a happy person if I never see ya again.

BTW, even Ralpy Boy at the sports leader is bashing this attempt at ...not sure what you call it, empathy? Sounds right. It's a landmark day, Ralphy has to eat his words for the last 6 years....crow served rare.

I cant
but feel like that he brought all of this on himself, and for that I cannot feel sorry for him.  I do however feel bad for those that are effected by his actions, but maybe he's just realizing that a bit too late.  I realize that he's hurt and all, but it's no excuse to hide from the roid scandal and shelve yourself just to get the media off you back, which will never happen. And for him to claim he's "tired" of the media, well...he pretty much invited them into his problems...all I have to say is stop whining already.

Why he's so tired...
  1. If he's too tired to play baseball, he can't be tested
  2. We finally got to him. You happy now? You won. It's over.
  3. He's been signing so many autographs
  4. He's tired from saying he's so tired
  5. Former mistress / gold-digger Kimberly Bell drank all his man juice
  6. He's heartbroken because he "really loved the bitch."
  7. Without the juice, it takes him longer to recover from injury.
  8. He's 41.
  9. Just like everyone else, he hates the Giants.
  10. Doesn't want get struck out by Oliver Perez for the umpteenth time.
Got anymore?
Look at the Gibson replay...his eyes are closed.

More for the list
  1. He actually has to use the cream everyone else is using
  2. It's very tiring "being on base all the time, and standing around in left field."
  3. His son wearing a Barry Sanders jersey, who represents everything that is right with an athlete, the complete oposite of his dad.
  4. Pedro Gomez reporting every bowel movement and what the slugger was reading
  5. He misses Dusty
  6. His lawyer is on the phone more then his agent or his family.
  7. He can't locate anyone at Marvel Comics to get his head right for the statue that's being constructed at SBC Park.
  8. Its tough to pop those zits on his back
