05 Projected Lineup and predicted stats.

I recently bought a copy of 2005 Major League Baseball Yearbook and Fantasy Guide at a local establishment and thought it would be interesting to post the predicted stats for (just about) every player on the A's for next season.
Here they are:

  1. Jason Kendall (.305, 5Hr, 48Rbi, 74 runs, 163 hits.)#4 ranked catcher
  2. Mark Kotsay  (.295, 14Hr, 55Rbi, 75 runs, 168 hits.)  #56 ranked outfielder
  3. Eric Chavez (.283, 31Hr, 93Rbi, 92 runs, 153, Hits)  #11 ranked Third Baseman
  4. Erubial Durazo  (.293, 24Hr, 86Rbi, 87 runs, 154 Hits)  #2 ranked DH
  5. Bobby Crosby (.265, 22Hr, 75Rbi, 81 runs, 147 Hits)  #16 ranked shortstop
  6. Nick Swisher (.253, 23Hr, 87Rbi, 90 runs, 133 Hits)
  7. Eric Byrnes (.280, 17Hr, 63Rbi, 80 runs, 137 Hits)
  8. Charles Thomas (.292, 4Hr, 26Rbi, 27 runs, 54 Hits)
  9.  Keith Ginter (.263, 17Hr, 50Rbi, 45 runs, 92 Hits)
  10.  Scott Hatteberg (12Hr, 62Rbi, 66 runs, 131 Hits)
  11. Bobby Kielty  (7Hr, 34Rbi, 35 runs, 54 Hits)
Pitchers.
  1. Rich Harden (3.65  15-8) Ranked #16 (Hudson #12)
  2. Barry Zito (3.85 16-10) Ranked #24
  3. Dan Haren (4.01, 12-10, 29GS) Ranked #43 (Mulder #44)
  4. Joe Blanton (4.28, 11-9, 26GS)
  5. Dan Meyer (4.02, 9-6)
  6. Octavio Dotel ( 3.07, 6-4, 43-49SVs) Ranked #5 Reliever
  7. Kiko Calero (2.91)
  8. Juan Cruz (3.09)
  9. Justin Duchscherer (3.49 85 Inn)
  10. Chad Bradford (3.34)
  11. Huston Street (3.42, 4-0, 2 SVs, 50 Ips)
Ok, well thats about all I can find.  Remember these are just predictions from a fantasy baseball guide and are supposed to be based on the strength of the team as much as the strength of the hitter.

What do ya think?

fantasy position rankings
Are you sure you didn't swap Kendall and Chavez's rankings?
Haren 43, Mulder 44, these guys have a sense of humor

3B
  1. Rodriguez
  2. Rolen
  3. Beltre
  4. ...Chavez...
don't tell me...
pre-11. Blalock
pre-11. Mora
pre-11. uh, Lowell?
pre-11. definitely uh, uh, David Wright?
pre-11. 3 more ahead of Chavez?  Chipper at 3B?  Let's just say yeah...
pre-11. GLAUS?
pre-11. last one...this is absurd...Aubrey Huff w/ 3B eligibility?
Heh, that was actually 11 "pre-11", so at least I can take solace in knowing that one of those inferior players isn't ahead of Chavez...still

Chavez #11
These are fantasy rankings.  The usual fantasy stats are Runs, HR, RBI, BA and Stolen Bases. Chavvy doesn't steal a ton of bases and doesn't hit for a massively high average.  Defense, walks and slugging percentage, for the most part, don't factor into the discussion.

but
I'll take those numbers from the pitching staff anyday

Chavez
Ya, they have Aubrey Huff, David Wright, and Mike Lowell in front of Chavez--right after him, Dallas Mcpherson.

no way
even just for the standard 5x5 categories...funny to think that in a 10-team league Chavez would be a backup.  So if they're severely underrating Chavez based on those categories, then in fairness I think Kendall should be lower than #4, at least after Posada and Piazza, probably after Varitek and Estrada too.  In real life I'd take Kendall over any of those guys, but for fantasy, no...

lineup
Where is Mark Ellis?  The 2005 golf glove winner at 2nd base is going to be the A's 2005 starter.  Believe it!

Ginter
Is the man!  He's on 5 of my fantasy teams.  I got to see him play for two years with the Brewers, and he's an excellent hitter.  I was sad to see him leave MIL, but at least he went to my AL team, and the Crew got a decent return with Lehr and Cruz and they have Weeks in AAA this year, and in the bigs by  August probably.

HR
I think both Chavez and Druazo will hit more HRs.  Durazo was originally acquired in large part because he showed he could hit a lot of HRs.  Chavez almost hit 31 HRs last year despite missing a a month and a half of the season.

projections
The kinds of models used to develop these projections tend to flatten guys out - that means they'll be pretty close on most, but they won't pick up the big breakouts or the collapses (due to injury, for instance).  If Kendall and Kotsay stay healthy and hit near .300, they'll both have upper-.300's OBPs.  As a result, Chavez with drive in a lot more than 93 runs.

I do like these projections for the rotation and pen - better than some others I've seen.  If these were to pan out, you're looking at a real contender.

I'll take 'em
I'll take these projections. They don't look too unrealistic, yet they look like they'd make for a good team.

those look like the numbers of a 90+ win team...

Pitching
The pitching projections project pretty optimistic scenarios for our young guys.

Why wouldnt Huff be ranked ahead of Chavez?
I dont get the posts saying that is stupid.  Huff has had better stats the last two years.  It's fantasy baseball, fielding doesnt matter, just pure numbers.

Ellis
They didn't include Ellis in the projections.  I guess it's hard to project a players year when they haven't played in over a year.

Avg
My Bad. Kielty is projected at a .251 avg.  Hatteberg at a .267 clip.
