FSBA Broadcasters choppin it up in Vegas

Yesterday at Treasure Island in Vegas, FSBA had their annual luncheon where people from both the A's and Giants attend to talk about the upcoming season.

Both sides have some good jokes about eachother.  My favorite is David Forst rip on the giants...

A's assistant general manager David Forst congratulated Giants executives Peter Magowan and Larry Baer for getting the 2007 All-Star Game. "I believe that'll be your 50th year here in California as an organization," Forst said. "By that time, it should also be the average age of your outfield."

Theres also more details about Greenwald broadcasting and Fanfest details.

Also funny is it mentions that Larry Bowa will a member of Baseball Tonight this season.

Are you sure. . .
This was the Hotel and Casino Treasure Island in Las Vegas and not the Treasure Island that rests in the middle of the Bay Bridge?

your probably right
I guess i just assumed vegas.  The real treasure island probably makes more sense as its in between SF and Oakland.  Whoops, Vegas is on my mind headin there for the Madness in March

LMAO!
"You know this is a naval base here," Macha said. "So for you people in the military, that'll be 14-hundred hours. And for you Giants fans, the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand's on the 2."

Wow, I'm starting to warm up to Macha... :)

That's hilarious
I am impressed.
The triple of Jeremy Brown's imagination was, in reality, a home run.

Macha
Sometimes Macha has some really funny quotes. I've never actually heard him be funny, but in print the man is pretty good.

But Glen Kuiper for 64 games? Ugh.

Good news...
"Greenwald's reduced schedule: In December, we reported that Hank Greenwald was looking to trim his A's telecast schedule significantly, and he has gotten that reduction."

Well that made my day...

Hank
No kidding. That guy ruined telecasts. He had an affinity for calling our ex-right fielder Jerome Dye.

Sigh.

Go Beach.

its funny you say that
at fanfest 2 years ago (i think), Dye was at the Q & A session.  Some old man asked him a question and adressed him as Jerome.  He was NOT PLEASED at all and quickly said its JERMAINE.  Something about old people, they think hes Jerome Dye.

Greenwald
Not to mention he'd confuse Mark McLemore with Jermaine Dye all the time. As if all black players were indistinguishable from one another...

I would reduce them all
He was just awful last year. How many times did he talk about the Giants when he was covering the A's? How many awful mistakes showed his complete lack of interest in the team he was being paid to cover?

by OaklandSi on Feb 12, 2005 2:42 AM PST up reply actions

I forget who it was
But I also remember him mis-pronouncing the name of a former player.

My biggest gripe with him is that he is just plain DULL.

Which is just too bad
because Hank has been in baseball a LONG time and really knows a lot...just too bad it is not translating to A's TV coverage.
What about Dave Stewart..has he done any announcing?

Macha Man
I almost posted a few days ago when everyone was knocking Macha, and now I notice people are giving him kudos for his little rip on Giants fans, so rather than use a diary to open the same can of worms as the other day, I'll just have my say here.

I believe Ken Macha is a pretty good fit for the A's.  He's not a guy with a huge rep (and salary), he's just a (very) professional coach, who knows exactly what he is.  He had a modest major league career, retired and became a coach.  I believe he is a superb motivational coach who fosters a very positive team attitude.  The players and inside baseball people obviously love him (remember the universal respect he got when he was bench coach?), and I have a feeling that he really is good at creating and maintaining a low key, have fun, play good baseball, and be good off the field attitude.  How many attitude problems have there been with the A's since Macha has been either bench, or head coach?  I'm grateful that there haven't been any (although I would hope that if Macha had any idea that Hudson and Zito wanted to go out to a Bahston bah, he would've checked their poor judgement and tucked them into their little beds himself that night).

I think that it's just incredibly hard to live up to the fans and media expectations (to make all the right on field moves) as a major league manager. If all the pieces of the puzzle are there (and they're ready to go every day) that would might make it simpler. Believe me, I've done my share of upper deck howling at some of his moves (most awful, I think was pinch hitting Melhuse for Dye), but I could say that about any manager I've ever watched.

Major league managers are often compared to ship captains, and I think Macha fits the description better than most. I believe that his patience in the consideration of his contract is a great indicator of what a team player, and good employee, Ken Macha is.  He knows the spotlight being on him is not a good thing for the team, so he plays it cool on the contract extension talk, focuses on the season ahead. Steady as she goes...

With Ken Macha you get a real pro at a bargain price.  His positivity isn't as effusive as a Chuck Tanner (or Ron Washington who I think is cut from the same mold), but it's there.  You can't read it in the stats, or in all the results, but I feel it's a very real, and valuable, thing.
