Thomas to A's? (ESPN)

Well it looks to be an Insider only story.  So anyone who have ESPN Insider could tell us what Buster Olney and gangs are reporting?
http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors?CMP=ILC-INHEAD&action=login&appRedirect=http% 3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fmlb%2ffeatures%2frumors%3fCMP%3dILC-INHEAD

It seems that Twins are looking at the same group of hitters (including Piazza) as the A's.  I guess this is good news/bad news.

"Oakland Big Hurt-ing?
Dec 9 - The A's are expected to sign right-handed slugger Frank Thomas, reports ESPN's Peter Gammons.

Oakland won't formally offer him a contract until after Dec. 7 -- the deadline for teams to offer their own free agents salary arbitration.

According to The Baltimore Sun, the Orioles are considering offering Thomas a one-year, incentive-laden deal.

The Twins say they'll review Thomas' medical records before continuing negotiations, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports."

A's sign 3 minor league free agents
On the ESPN transaction page the A's signed two pitchers Jason Karnuth and Scott McClain and an outfielder named Doug Clark.

But maybe more interesting is that Jason Perry was sent down to AAA removing him from the major league roster. Making space for Thomas?

Scott McClain and Doug Clark
McClain Is the new Matt Stairs.  He's 33 (will be 34 most of next season), bats right and hit 30 HR's in AAA last year.

Doug Clark put up good numbers in AAA, bat left, and  will be 30 next year.

Signatures? We don't need no stinking signatures.

Doug Clark
He's a good story. The AAA season had ended, and he was back home in Massachusetts working as a substitute teacher when the Giants called him up for the first time. He ended up scoring the winning run against the Dodgers as a pinch-runner in one of his first games.

Where's Pickering?
I really don't get the fact that no one has picked up Calvin Pickering. With the exception of last year's slow start, the man has flat out raked for the last two years. He could be had for the cost of a plane ticket to Arizona. Why wont anyone give this guy a chance?

Room for Thomas and ...
The Perry move leaves two spots open on the 40-man roster.

by Hot Corner on Dec 9, 2005 5:37 PM PST up reply actions

Well, two spots according to ...
... this.

But only one according to this.

by Hot Corner on Dec 9, 2005 5:47 PM PST up reply actions

Only one spot
The latter is correct. Komine is on the 40-man roster, but isn't listed there for some reason.
