A Call For Action!!!
Ok, I didn't see this anywhere on AN yet, not even in the Daily Link Dump. Perhaps I missed it, but this seems very important to me:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2005/12/08/SPGAEG4O4K1.DTL
(BTW, I'll save the "I told you so's" for later. lol) Granted, what I am about to say has only a little to do with the article, but it's what I got from it. I'll keep this short, but it's up to us A's fans not to drop the ball this time. Read the article, and do your part! Wolff is doing his part, unlike ownership before him, to generate enough interest to raise attendance. I respect that at least he's taking the stance, and being completely honest and up front about it. Now, I realize not everyone can make it to the games, and some here already make it to plenty. This is a call for those in-between. If you can, by any and all means neccesary, make it to as many A's games as possible this year. We HAVE to do our part. Wolff seems to be gauging interest to see if his product will be a wise investment here. Let's show him it is. I, for one, will be making as many trips possible to see the A's this year. I, for one, will spend more money on frivilous merchandise this year. Do I have a lot of money? Nope, not at all. But now is the time for the A's fans to do thier part. Let's show Mr. Wolff that we will support our A's unlike the years before. We have one of the best franchises over the last 5-6 years or so. Our attendance was 8th highest in the league. We probably won't draw more than the Yanks, Sox, etc. That is a given. But we really, really need to do our part to support this team, give Wolff a reason to keep them here and give them a new park to play in. Anyone with me?

you also obviously caught ...
My only worry is that the quote means some crazy is gonna go all John Hinckley Jr. on Beane ...
(The question then, of course, is who would be the Jodie Foster in this case? Jennifer? GnGG? Cindi? Alyssa Milano?)

isn't that precisely the sort of thing ...
I say, if Mike Love continues performing at county fairs, the tairsts have won. Perhaps we could have Mike sent to Syria.

OK Let's channel the Kvin Costner Voiceover
Cut to James Earl Jones.
Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

Will Lew pitch me a wang dang doodle?
Wolff says on the one hand he's gauging market interest based on increased 2006 ticket sales, while on the other hand proposing to shut down the Upper Deck and reduce Coliseum capacity by 25% or more. I'll leave my conspiracy theories aside for now, but basically challenging the region to buy more tickets while making ticket buying more difficult doesn't quite add up on my abacus.
(Reference for the younger crowd: the legendary blues singer Howling Wolf was perhaps best known for his version of the Willie Dixon classic "Wang Dang Doodle." A wang dang doodle is a rockin' party.)

Amen
And yeah, the plan to close the upper deck could well have the effect of increasing revenue (or at least keeping it constant) while decreasing attendance. Good for the owners, bad for the fans. I don't begrudge Wolff et al. for trying to make money - that's what businessmen do - but to make that move and claim that next year's attendance will act as a referendum on fan support is disingenuous at best.

Poor fan is as poor fan does
The larger issues were discussed at length last month and I'm not going to repeat myself (sighs of relief abound I'm sure). Suffice it to say that yes, I think one can oppose the deck closure objectively...many do.
A more supply side analysis which you might support was discussed here . It's a real Laffer!
And you say you don't buy my conspiracy theories, but I didn't say what they were. Here, I do so, in song no less!

My fear
However, if the stands remain empty, he'll say, "Look at all I've done for you and you guys still don't show up! That's it, I'm moving."

So far he is at last years budget
There is a whole lot left to do.
Your point is well taken though if players like Huff and Gomes start the season in Green and Gold.
Lets see.

I am with you nutbag
That said, I think there are bigger issues than getting folks to games. To help tha A's bottom line and prevent our stars from leaving, we need more season ticket holder (unfortunately I cannot help there) and better marketing. I am not talking about the cute little commercials - those do quite well. They need to be on a powerful radio station. A tv deal would be great. They need to get corporations to purchase season seats. These things have not happened in Oakland though I always remain optimistic they will (I won't get on a San Jose rant here). Sure they have fared well in attendance some years but they the consistency - more season ticket holders and better marketing!
