A Call For Action!!!

Ok, I didn't see this anywhere on AN yet, not even in the Daily Link Dump. Perhaps I missed it, but this seems very important to me:

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2005/12/08/SPGAEG4O4K1.DTL

(BTW, I'll save the "I told you so's" for later. lol) Granted, what I am about to say has only a little to do with the article, but it's what I got from it. I'll keep this short, but it's up to us A's fans not to drop the ball this time. Read the article, and do your part! Wolff is doing his part, unlike ownership before him, to generate enough interest to raise attendance. I respect that at least he's taking the stance, and being completely honest and up front about it. Now, I realize not everyone can make it to the games, and some here already make it to plenty. This is a call for those in-between. If you can, by any and all means neccesary, make it to as many A's games as possible this year. We HAVE to do our part. Wolff seems to be gauging interest to see if his product will be a wise investment here. Let's show him it is. I, for one, will be making as many trips possible to see the A's this year. I, for one, will spend more money on frivilous merchandise this year. Do I have a lot of money? Nope, not at all. But now is the time for the A's fans to do thier part. Let's show Mr. Wolff that we will support our A's unlike the years before. We have one of the best franchises over the last 5-6 years or so. Our attendance was 8th highest in the league. We probably won't draw more than the Yanks, Sox, etc. That is a given. But we really, really need to do our part to support this team, give Wolff a reason to keep them here and give them a new park to play in. Anyone with me?

My only worry is that the quote means some crazy is gonna go all John Hinckley Jr. on Beane ...

OK Let's channel the Kvin Costner Voiceover
specialist.  The Voice: If you build it, they will come.

Cut to James Earl Jones.

Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

Will Lew pitch me a wang dang doodle?
Because short of that Lew's howls echo hollow to this ear.  Each MLB team is gonna get an extra $20-25 million in revenue this year ($10 million MLB.com+internet profits, $2 million XM satellite radio deal, and around $11 million from the Nationals sale, according to Tom Verducci at SI).  Seems to me that a payroll boost up to that amount doesn't show any particular magnanimity by A's ownership, except in comparison to the pocket-the-profits owners in places like KC.

Wolff says on the one hand he's gauging market interest based on increased 2006 ticket sales, while on the other hand proposing to shut down the Upper Deck and reduce Coliseum capacity by 25% or more.  I'll leave my conspiracy theories aside for now, but basically challenging the region to buy more tickets while making ticket buying more difficult doesn't quite add up on my abacus.

(Reference for the younger crowd:  the legendary blues singer Howling Wolf was perhaps best known for his version of the Willie Dixon classic "Wang Dang Doodle."  A wang dang doodle is a rockin' party.)

Amen
Agree with pretty much everything you say. Another recent article noted that MLB revenues on the whole have gone up 60% in recent years, while the percentage of revenues spent on payroll has fallen from 67% to 53%. To be fair, the numbers for the A's are probably different, just because we had one of the lowest payrolls in the league 5 years ago. In any case, I don't feel the need to prostrate myself at Lew Wolff's feet just because he's willing to keep pace with the rest of the league.

And yeah, the plan to close the upper deck could well have the effect of increasing revenue (or at least keeping it constant) while decreasing attendance. Good for the owners, bad for the fans. I don't begrudge Wolff et al. for trying to make money - that's what businessmen do - but to make that move and claim that next year's attendance will act as a referendum on fan support is disingenuous at best.

Well...
I don't buy into the conspiracy theory crap, and usually I do. Can you blame them for shutting down the third deck FROM AN OBJECTIVE POINT OF VIEW? And honestly, they won't be closed during sell-out games, I gaurantee it. If people were showing up consistently enough already, there would be no reason to shut the third deck. Supply and demand. It's basic econ/business folks. You can talk all you want about how it's a slight on the fans, but the truth is the fan's have been doing thier fair share of screwing themselves as well. Support the team better. If this team had better supprot from thier fan base, dollar-wise, we wouldn't be discussing any of this. And don't give me any crap about being a poor fan, I am as poor a fan as they come. I feed my family, I pay my bills, and if I can spare it, I make it out to A's games (which requires a nice three hour drive there, three hour drive back, food, hotel if needed, etc.). It's give and take folks, and some people only want to take. If you are a frustrated season ticket holder from a shut down section, you can blame your fellow fans and thier lack of support. Pointing your fingers anywhere else is true injustice.

Poor fan is as poor fan does
Dude, whatever else one might think about this, it is rude and arrogant to assume what someone else can or can't afford, and to diss them because of it.  Fact:  my kids are going to fewer ballgames next year if my average ticket costs go up much. And we gave plenty more than we took last year, to the tune of maybe 80 tickets bought for family and friends I dragged out, who would otherwise not have gone at all.  Check yourself...who in this discussion is pointing fingers?

The larger issues were discussed at length last month and I'm not going to repeat myself (sighs of relief abound I'm sure).  Suffice it to say that yes, I think one can oppose the deck closure objectively...many do.

A more supply side analysis which you might support was discussed here .  It's a real Laffer!

And you say you don't buy my conspiracy theories, but I didn't say what they were.  Here, I do so, in song no less!

Fair enough...
True, my comments about what people can/can't afford do not come out right at all. I apologize if I offend anyone with that an example. A truly poorly thought out example in hindsight. Also, for the record, I tried to make sure that I recognized that some did more than thier share, sorri I didn't get that across better. I do not buy into any negative theories here at all, something I should have thought longer about prior to putting into text as well. I don't think Mr. Wolff is perfect or anything, but this team has needed better fan support for years. I think it's a two way street. They do thier part, we do ours. It seems as if they are more than willing to do some things, and I just thought I could attempt a bit of a rally to support that. People are going to have bitter feelings about some things, true enough. Furthermore, they are certainly entitled to thier own feelings and opinions on said matters, that is thier right. Again, I was merely attempting to rally some support for the A's. Sorry if I touched on any negative subjects, it's not the intent. I'll keep it plain and simple with this: A's fans could do more to better support thier team, in my opinion. Some do, and it's great! Hopefully in the future, more of them can to.

More fan support=good
I'm definitely down with your theme:  more A's fan butts in the seats to support this great team we have.  From each according to their abilities, ya might say.  Thanks for the reconsideration.

No, thank you...
Indeed, I figured we'd be able to find the middle ground. Good for A's, good for us! And seriously, not a problem at all with reconsidering. I actually thank you for pointing it out. I never attempt to offend anyone (nor sound like an a$$), regardless what side of the fence we are on. I really like that to "From each according to their abilities". Very well put.

My fear
Look at what Wolff is doing right now.  He's loosened the purse strings and is honestly trying to imnprove the quality of the A's, instead of just contending, he want to win.

However, if the stands remain empty, he'll say, "Look at all I've done for you and you guys still don't show up!  That's it, I'm moving."

So far he is at last years budget
Frank Thomas's condition makes him a bench player, not a 162 game DH.

There is a whole lot left to do.

Your point is well taken though if players like Huff and Gomes start the season in Green and Gold.

Lets see.

how inflated are our attendence numbers
because of $2 wednesdays and the deep discounts you can get for tickets. Nutbag's diary hits the chord that I heard when I read this article too. Lew is raising the ceiling ever so slightly. (Enough to resign Z long-term with a hometown discount). I've come to agree that closing the upper deck is a bold true step to test the East Bay as a major league market.  Filling the seats with butts is a better 10th man than crazed drumming and flagwaving. I'm tired of the A's being thought of as a Yankees/Red Sox farm system by the national media.  We have excellent pitching, defense and most importantly, "chemistry." Convert your friends, trick your enemies.  Gnats are on a downturn, A's on a constant upswing.

The best I can do is hit the A's at Mariner's games.  The nice thing will be that it should be easier to get tickets than A's at Anaheim.

I am with you nutbag
Hell, I live in SoCal and I make it to 7 or 8 games a year in Oakland.

That said, I think there are bigger issues than getting folks to games.  To help tha A's bottom line and prevent our stars from leaving, we need more season ticket holder (unfortunately I cannot help there) and better marketing.  I am not talking about the cute little commercials - those do quite well.  They need to be on a powerful radio station.  A tv deal would be great.  They need to get corporations to purchase season seats.  These things have not happened in Oakland though I always remain optimistic they will (I won't get on a San Jose rant here).  Sure they have fared well in attendance some years but they the consistency - more season ticket holders and better marketing!
