12.06: Daily Link Dump/ Winter Meetings Rumors Thread

Lots and lots of trade rumors are floating around on the second day of the Winter Meetings. I LOVE HOT STOVE TIME!

Here are some rumors that are going around right now (all courtesy of rotoworld).

  • The Twins had conversations with Texas about Hank Blalock, Boston regarding Mike Lowell and Cincinnati about Austin Kearns yesterday.
  • A.J. Burnett will make $7 million next year and $12 million in each of the following four season under the terms of the deal he's agreed to with the Jays.
  • The Philadelphia Daily News says the Phillies asked for Mark Prior when discussing Bobby Abreu with the Cubs yesterday and weren't dismissed outright.
  • The Red Sox, Angels and Diamondbacks have talked about a three-team deal that would put Manny Ramirez on the Angels and bring Troy Glaus to Boston, according to both the Globe and the Herald.
  • Free agent Al Leiter still hasn't made a decision on retirement.
  • The Marlins may force the Rangers to give up either John Danks or Thomas Diamond in return for Juan Pierre.
  • The Angels and Devil Rays are discussing a deal that would send Joey Gathright and/or Toby Hall to Anaheim.
  • Arizona, Atlanta and Tampa Bay have reportedly discussed a three-team deal sending Julio Lugo to the Braves, Johnny Estrada to the Diamondbacks and pitching from Arizona to Tampa Bay.
  • The Padres are reportedly in serious discussions with free agent Kenny Rogers.
  • Free agent Bill Mueller has narrowed his choices to the Dodgers and Pirates, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
  • The Tacoma News Tribune is also reporting that the Mariners have offered Kevin Millwood $44 million over four years and says the two sides could be close to a deal.
  • A person familiar with the Devil Rays' thinking told MLB.com that the Red Sox and Mariners are making offers for Aubrey Huff.
  • and of course ...

* Milton Bradley could be on his way to the A's for right-hander Kirk Saarloos and left-hander Mario Ramos.

What about this one from...
ESPN Insider?!

West Coast or bust

Dec 6 - The Dodgers and Athletics have actively joined in the hunt for David Wells, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports. Boston needs pitching in return in any deal.

by CyZito on Dec 6, 2005 8:06 AM PST reply actions

A's interested in Wells
David that is.  Well, "interested" might be too strong a word, but Gammons is reporting it on the "Rumors" page on espn.com and that Boston wants pitching in return.

It's an Insider article, but here's the link

http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors

I'm not sure who the A's could be offering.  It certainly doesn't seem likely to be any of the young guys, I can't imagine Kennedy and Cruz would be enough, and Wells for Zito just doesn't make sense.

by JLeverenz on Dec 6, 2005 8:08 AM PST reply actions

Yea...
I am very interested in this rumor.  What on earth could we be offering.  I feel like this has got to be a three teamer because I assume we don't want to a)take on all of Wells's salary and b)help the red sox get younger and better.

I just don't understand it!

by CyZito on Dec 6, 2005 8:20 AM PST up reply actions

Could be offering
the newly acquired Gaudin.

And then Wells gets flipped to...?

by grover on Dec 6, 2005 8:35 AM PST up reply actions

Forgot about Gaudin
As odd as that sounds about someone we just got yesterday...

Sharon mentioned Boston could be interested in Choi, I suppose there could be a 3-teamer with

Boston: Gaudin, Choi
Oakland: Milton Bradley
LA: David Wells

That seems fair from the LA/Oakland sides, I suppose Boston might want another pitcher in which case Oakland adds one of Kennedy/Cruz/Saarloos.

He'II take the ball every 5th day, has a rubber arm, never walks anyone, really competitor.

Plus, he loves riding hogs and drinking beers...can't be that bad of a guy.

And this is a Billy Beane move. If Boston wants pitching in return, then it makes perfect sense for BB to stick his nose in this trade. This could be the birth of a three-way.

Birth of a three-way?
Usually, it's the other way around (a three-way resulting in a birth).  But it's the Winter Meetings, where everything is topsy turvy.

the new disc is great
It's as if Go4 listened to the various young bands today aping their sound, and said, "No, this is how it's done." And a far better sound mix than the early muddy stuff.

Dave Allen is my favorite rock bassist ever.

frightened
entertainment! is one of my favorite records. The bass lines are indeed butt kicking. But they never quite hit that peak for me after. Solid Gold was good, but not mindblowing. The other records did nothing for me.

I remain too scared to listen to the new CD.

by Apricot on Dec 6, 2005 12:27 PM PST up reply actions

just do it
I was browsing in a record store 2 weeks ago, and suddenly I noticed a new sound coming over the store's speakers. "Hm," I thought, "these are Go4 songs, but they sound much more ... forceful and 'human' at the same time. Well, that's definitely King and Gill on guitars ..." The clerk confirmed it was, indeed, the new album.

Really, it sounds fantastic. Totally kicks ass. I had precisely the same doubts I'm projecting that you have (old-fart ex-socialists trying to cash in on their newfound currency as touchstones; dino-rock-reunion crap; no new songs). It's ferocious.

My only quibble is that "We Live, As We Dream, Alone" (my favorite song of King/Gill's) wasn't re-arranged.

by monkeyball on Dec 6, 2005 1:04 PM PST up reply actions

gone funky, huh?
Speaking of which, I'm listening to the new record now (thank you Apple Store... I hope no one knocks on my office door for the next half-hour). It's been enjoyable so far on a first pass...

The thing is, entertainment! is like a holy relic to me. Thinking of this record as a redo is dangerous. However, thinking of it as a revisiting is letting me embrace it more. And I'm enjoying the Solid Gold songs better than the originals... the production makes the songs atmospheric instead of muddy.

The singing in general seems stronger and more human. The drum lines seem identical, though cleaner. The bass lines are a little different but nice and fatter. The guitar sound is an improvement in the post-e! songs, but again, I consider that original brittle guitar sound of e! holy distortion, so I'd rather not compare.  The new rambling on "Anthrax" is amusing.

Thanks!

<loosens mb's ankle>

Have a good hop around.

by Apricot on Dec 6, 2005 1:18 PM PST up reply actions

there's definitely a certain value to ...
... the original sound of the "We are abstract alien beings and we are here to understand your so-called 'punk' rock by dismantling it piece by unrecognizable piece."

But the new album sounds much more conventionally like an actual "band." Which is, I know, a bourgeois conceit and all ...

But seriously, I always treasured Peter Buck's comment from the early '90s about how touring (albeit briefly) with Go4 in '82 "taught REM how to be a band" (or something to that effect). I don't think the sound of the early albums ever captured that "essence." And of course there are now the obligatory comments from Gill/King/Burnham/Allen about how they never liked the sound mix to begin with.

(And I know this is heresy, but I always considered Go4 to be more of a "singles" band [ok, an "anti-singles" band] than an "album" band.)

As for Wells
A wells acquisition would 100 percent mean that Barry is gone. Acquiring Wells would tell me something else as well: If the A's traded Zito and got Wells seperately, the A's would haev just as good a chance at winning it all in 06 (providing we traded Zito for something more than A ballers) I would love to have Wells. He's got 1 year left. He's a durable lefty who walks nobody (a nifty 5/1 K/BB rate) who's 1.6 G/F ratio fits nicely with the A's. He's also got a 3.18 career postseason ERA (15 series')

THe three way (snicker) seems much more likely, but i'd love to have both him AND Bradley.

If I recall correctly ...
... the Federal Folk-Rock Act of 1965 mandated that at least 3/4 of any band had to wear squared-off colored-lens glasses; a rider attached late in session amended the requirement to also allow round granny glasses. (Unfortunately, when the bill was about to expire in 1975, Tom Hayden pushed a renewal through with a new provision dictating that David Crosb y would be provided with fresh organs in perpetuity. That clause alone, more so than the oil crisis or the recession of the late '70s-early '80s, was what pushed the US into deficit spending.)

McGuinn was the lead guitarist. Signature "chiming" 12-string Rickenbacker sound.
