I just saw that the A's record in 1 and 2 run games last year was 35-37; whereas the Los Angeles Angels of the Greater San Fernando Valley And All Unincorporated Regions were 50-37 in the same category. I've been thinking about this since last year--when it certainly seemed like we lost a lot of games where our starter pitched great but we only scored a couple runs, and lost 3-2 or something like that. Do y'all think that an occasional sacrifice bunt or even 'gasp' stolen base might help us tack another run onto some of those pitchers duels where the sluggers just can't get ahold of one?
Now I'm as sabermetric as the next guy, and I also recognize that we don't have the best personnel for such tactics (although some of our guys are OK); on the other hand I think there is value in having a balanced attack and not always waiting for the Earl Weaver special--particularly since last year we didn't HIT that many homers. I'm not necessarily advocating, just agitating. What's the consensus?
(Of course we all know it'll never happen with BB at the controls but what is AN for if not to question the unquestionable?)
