Nomar signs 1 yr deal with the Dodgers

According the the Boston Herald its a 1 yr deal for 6 million in base salaray but filled with incentives that could increase that to around 8 million

Now the A's werent a part of the Nomah sweepstakes, but this could send NY into a frenzy on signing Damon.  If they fail to sign Damon, I wouldnt be suprised if Beane gets a call regarding Payton.

Another thing to think about is how much Frank Thomas could command if Nomar is getting a 6 million dollar 1 yr deal.

for not blocking his top prospects with ridiculous contracts, as  his cross-town rivals have done.

this saves colletti's ass in LA
especially with the media.  To give them something new to talk about (and talk up...think about how Nomar'll be welcomed in LA!) other than let them potentially grumble about how he got fleeced by BB in his first 15 minutes on the job is a good thing for him.

Now, we'll see if Nomahhhh can stay healthy; maybe the 1-year deal will be added incentive for him...

Less than I thought
Nomar signed only a 1 year deal? He's risking a lot but he can be Mr. Dodger now and hang out in Manhatten Beach.  He also is assured he won't be relegated to DH.  What an infield the Dodgers have cooking.

1-year deals
I think there is a reason for the 1-year deal.  First, Arn and Nomar are really good friends (Arn started to cry when he was addressing a group talking about what happened to Nomar in Boston) and they both believe Nomar is a really good baseball player.  Because they think he is still very good, they will keep signing 1-year deals because one of those years, he will stay healthy and put up good numbers.  Then, having just had a good year, and being a free agent, he'll pull in a huge 3-4 year deal.  I'm sure he had multiyear offers this year, but 1-year deal maximizes his chance for a much large payoff in the future.
Signatures? We don't need no stinking signatures.

Personal Relationship is Nice
If Nomar lives in LA and is friendly with the Dodgers, why wouldn't the Dodgers sign Nomar as their SS instead of winning the Furcal sweepstakes? Is Nomar willing to concede that his defensive skills are that diminished? That would make it harder to negotiate for that big 4 year deal in the future. Was the Dodgers move that much an afterthought? Anyway, is it a given Nomar will be playing 1B? Mueller could swap wouldn't he?

Finally!
I don't have to read about that Yankmee 3xSS infield anymore.

Once again,
the Yankees are runners-up for someone they go after. Interesting. I think it's a good pick up for the Dodgers. I'd say Nomar's chances of rebounding are better than 50/50.

Frank Thomas' value may be dropping...
He's been available for a long time, nobody is swooping him up.  When was the last time the Big Hurt actually played a full season?

Given his "baggage vs. pop," I think our chances of getting him improves with every day.

Jose Rijo still haunts me.

I think with Thomas
every team, A's included, is just in a "holding pattern" until his medical reports come back in January. Fans are impatient, but all the GMs know that the season doesn't start tomorrow and they aren't going to make a solid offer without sufficient knowledge about Thomas' health.

Health reports not available til Jan?
Do you have this on good authority, Nico?  Of course, that explains a lot.  Wasn't he undergoing exams in early December? He's waiting a month for the results? What is he have, Kaiser?

LOL
My pastrami sandwich used to be on Kaiser, but it recently switched to Health Nut.

I think the holidays have something to do with the delay, turning "two weeks" into "over a month," but yes, I've redd more than once that all the reports won't be back until January. Could just be that some tests are actually two tests that have to be done with some time in between.

Payton?
I'm pretty sure that Mr. Steinbrenner won't be interested in Payton.  After all he isn't worth over 10 million dollars.  And Payton is a good solid player, but his stats were only good for part of the year.  If anything, i might suspect big Swisher.  He is young and a Switch hitter (the Yankees love that) and in his rookie season he hit over 20 bombs.  With Don Mattingly as his hitting coach the future for Swish in New York would be good.

I would rather keeo Swish
than any of our other OF. Plus swish is not a CF, although I've recall something about him playing CF in college. However swish has too much upside power wise, for us too give up. I would rather Payton go, or even Kotsay. I don't see what the yankees have that would warrent Kotsay or Swish, but i'm sure they have something worth Payton.

Nomar
at least it ain't the Yanks. Say what you will about Nomar, but he used to kill the A's.

And i'd hate to see him all buddy buddy with Jeter and A-rod.that stuff makes me sick.

He belongs with the dodgers he's from LA that works out for a hometown boy playing on that stage.

It's hard to levy
too much criticism on a guy who has been in the league for years and has a lifetime batting average of .320. (Though I suppose one could make a compelling counterargument by saying "Alex Sanchez".)
