Just off the top of my head
C Bench (D's too important here)
1b Gehrig
2b Morgan
SS Wagner
3b Schmidt
LF Bonds
CF Mays
RF Ruth
DH Williams

SP1 Walter Johnson
SP2 Lefty Grove
SP3 Satchel Paige
SP4 Christy Matthewson
SP5 Roger Clemens

RP1 Dennis Eckersley
RP2 Mariano Rivera
RP3 Goose Gossage (he hung on too long, but as a RP from '75-'85 he was incredible and he belongs in the HOF)

If I'm taking folks out of position, though ...
sub in Mantle and Cobb for Bonds and Ruth. No balls will fall in my OF.

actually ...
... if you want your last sentence to hold true, you should probably include Bonds.

I'm sheating a bit
Joe played ss in the minors with the sf seals. so in my fantasy i pick him at ss and rose at 2b.

i think i have the sickest lineup. i think if randy johnson were my closer and maddux took his spot as a starter my team would kick even more fantasy ass.

Too tough for me to compare
dead ball/new ball eras, as well as the pre-roids/post-roids era.

The game has graced us with terrific ballplayers from a wide range of eras.

Ha
You're just dying to rag on someone's choices! I don't blame you, after the crap you've been taking!

This diary seems to be more about just who your favorite guys are... perhaps without a rigorous statistical analysis and perhaps owing to personal preference.  I'm sure you've noticed it's really hard to make a roster like this and leave out someone or two. I like his choice of Carlton.  Man he was tough.

rigorous statistical analysis
I didn't become a baseball fan to crunch numbers. I mean, I like the statistical and even economic aspect of baseball, but I don't like sucking all the magic out of the game.

believe me I know it
I was a big Pirates fan back then, and I can just see Lefty dropping that nasty slider in right past Dave Parker's mighty futile swing.  You're right, no one's had as good of an off speed pitch (at least from the left side) til Zito came along.

GOOD TEAMS PEOPLE!
More of this kind of topic on AN!  I love this stuff.

SS Honus Wagner - R
LF Oscar Charleston - L
RF Babe Ruth - L
C Josh Gibson - R
DH Ted Williams - L
1B Lou Gehrig - L
CF Willie Mays - R
3B Mike Schmidt - R
2B Eddie Collins - L

..heh heh heh >:D  Collins over Joe Morgan only for defense and durability (these 2 virtually equal in value IMHO). If you choose a team with no Negro leaguers, replace Charleston and Gibson with Bonds and ....Bench I guess. Better with Oscar and Josh. Catcher is the toughest call I think.

SP Satchel Paige
SP Walter Johnson
SP Lefty Grove
SP Roger Clemens
SP Grover Cleveland Alexander

CL Mariano Rivera
LOOGY Sandy Koufax (jk! imagine though)

Tough to snub Koufax, Pedro, Mathewson, Cy Young, Seaver, Gibson, Carlton, and even Randy Johnson. But I'd feel comfortable with those five. (You could also find worthy Negro Leaguers like Bullet Joe Rogan, Cannonball Dick Redding, and Smokey Joe Williams; they're hard to compare though)

Woohoo! Bring on the second string team for an All-Time Series!

by TheBigO on Dec 16, 2005 10:37 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

wasn't the big O
Oscar Charleston?  Just kidding, I actually remember Oscar Robertson, though I only saw him at the tail end of his career (what a great bball player... and he's one of those guys who'd be just as great in today's game).

Oscar Charleston... that's a name nobody knows, and according to many, was the greatest negro leaguer power hitter of all.

by Brian in 317 on Dec 17, 2005 6:52 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah Charleston's kinda forgotten ...
...but if you read about him, it sounds like he was basically Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays rolled into one with pretty much superlative skills at everything (awesome speed, power, lefty bat, OF range, etc) except for an average throwing arm, big whoop. Plus he was one mean SOB, loved to brawl and had gone to WWI when he was like 17, apparently. John McGraw (and MANY others) said he was the greatest player he'd ever, seen so that's a pretty good endorsement.

by TheBigO on Dec 17, 2005 3:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

McGraw said that!?!!
Incredible.  I'd love to know where that quote is, if you can remember.

by Brian in 317 on Dec 17, 2005 5:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm, OK I don't have the quote but ...
it's referred to at the end of the chapter on Charleston in Blackball Stars by John Holway; Bill James also relates McGraw's "reported" opinion in the New Historical Baseball Abstract, and rates Charleston as the fourth greatest player ever. McGraw DID apparently say "If only I could calcimine him" (also from Blackball Stars). There are a lot of quotes from various folks, white and black, saying Charleston was right up there with Cobb and Ruth, if not better.

by TheBigO on Dec 18, 2005 6:06 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

After McGraw died
his wife found a list of all the Negro-Leaguers he would have liked to have signed.  He also once tried to pass off a light-skinned black as an Indian.  BTW, why the hell was it okay to play baseball with Native Americans and not African Americans?  Racism is so stupid.

Yeah. Then Selig calles it in extra innings when
each team runs out of position players, and an irate Billy Martin and Earl Weaver charge the stands with bats and let him have it. The baseball Gods look down on this, smile, and give us Bart Giamatti back. All is good in the world again.

I like the 25 man roster idea
So here goes

C--Josh Gibson, backed up by Yogi Berra (can play LF)

1B-- Lou Gehrig, backed up by Keith hernandez (defense)

2B-- Joe Morgan, backed up by Bill Mazeroski

SS-- Honus Wagner
3B-- Mike Schmidt

ARod backs up both of them

LF-- Bonds. Barry Bonds
CF-- His Godfather
RF-- Babe Ruth

The 3 OF backups are Rickey Henderson for basestealing; Ty Cobb for overall orneriness; and Henry Aaron, to keep Cobb in line.

And Oscar Charleston for good measure

4 starters

Train
Lefty Grove
Clemens
Satchel Paige

In the bullpen for various reasons are:

Dennis Eckersley
Goose Gossage
Hoyt Wilhelm
Sandy Koufax
(Babe Ruth-- he's our 10th pitcher)

and Jim Bouton to write about the whole thing.

Thanks for including Mazeroski-the greatest doubleplay guy in mlb history, and author of the greatest WS ending in history too (though not according to ESPN). I almost put him on my roster, but I didn't go to 25.

Yeah, Babe Ruth in the bullpen would be an incredible asset.  I assume you might ph him in certain situations?

why do
people love clemens more than martinez?

when one looks at the stats, pedro dominated like few have ever, including clemens.  I mean from 97 till basically even now he has been downright sick.  clemens can't even touch that.

Based upon sheer dominance...
...during the era in which each played performed.  And considering that I need a real lineup with a legitimate leadoff hitter, etc.

my team
C -

SS - A Rod
3B - Mike Schmidt
LF - Barry Bonds
CF - Willie Mays
RF - Babe Ruth
DH - Ted Williams (though I'm sure he'd DH over his dead body... so to speak)

In order...
     Lajoie
     A-Rod
     Babe Ruth
     Lou Gehrig

     Barry Bonds
     Ted Williams
     Mike Schmidt
     Johnny Bench

Ruth's D
People think that because he was big he couldn't run... but my professor played in the Senators farm system in the 30s and he says that the man was graceful as a swan in RF... you couldn't get a ball by him and if something did get to a gap... he of course had an unbelievable arm.
I was shocked by this too... and though I don't know exactly how many stolen bases he had... I doubt there's anyone in the history of baseball one could  possibly rather have in RF than Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth - 123 SB, 117 CS
The Babe was pretty fast when he was young.  Problem was, he kept trying to swipe bases when he old and fat.  The 1926 World Series ended when Ruth was caught stealing with 2 outs in the 9th inning of game 6 - with Gehrig at bat!

Ever seen that old pic of Ruth?
I think it's from when he was pitching with Boston. It's notable because it's from before he acquired the gut--he looked like a fit, trim, strong athlete.  For his time he was a big guy too, 6'2 and up to 215 (or more, later on). Also I think he swung like a 40 ounce bat!  Crazy.

by TheBigO on Dec 18, 2005 11:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Ruth swung a big stick, but ...
I've read that a few years back, one of his bats was shown to some major leaguers at an all-star game.  One of them examined the bat and exclaimed, "Hey! This bat is corked!"  Whether it was or not, I can't say, but there really isn't anything new under the sun.

Love this diary and thread.
I love these sorts of discussions.  Personally, I think Babe Ruth was the best player of all time. Outstanding pitcher in his youth (2 20 win seasons, ERA title), best run-producer ever, and someone who transformed the game.  My all-time team:
C Johnny Bench
1B Lou Gehrig
2B Joe Morgan
3B Mike Schmidt
SS Honus Wagner (it could have been A-Rod, if he hadn't switched to 3rd)
LF Stan Musial (Ted Williams was a better hitter, but I'll take Musial for defense and good clubhouse chemistry, plus he hit .331/.418/.559, which is pretty damn good.)
CF Mickey Mantle
RF Babe Ruth
DH Rickey Henderson

SP Walter Johnson
SP Lefty Grove
SP Juan Marichal (has better stats during the 60's than Bob Gibson)
SP Roger Clemens
SP Christy Matthewson
