Sammy Sosa Flyer

With the news that the Baltimore Orioles wont be bringing back either Rafael Palmeiro or Sammy Sosa what would you be willing to spend for one season of Sosa?  His numbers last year were horrible but he's only 12 HR's short of the 600 milestone.  He would bring a lot of people out to games to see him pursue that mark.  If he were able to regain his power form he'd be the right handed power bat we've been looking for.  I'd take a flyer on Sosa for about 2.5 million.  Thoughts?

Here's a short story about that:
No.

MAYBE for a mil. or less, but Sosa is not going to take that.  I do not think Sosa is worth the risk of investing any significant amount of money in.  Trending WAY down, steroid rumors abound (and bringing him to the land of BALCo would only put those rumors to a bull horn), he's 36, only a year away from being a clubhouse menace... the list goes on and on, where the POSSIBLE benefits are farfetched and pricey.

And this is coming from a man who owns a Sosa (Cubs) jersey.

As for bringing people to the gate: ther has to be a better way... how about a winning ballclub?  Er... okay, tried and failed.  Orange baseballs?  A ball gopher?  Live Elephant?  A sideshow is not worth the proverbial 'it,' either.

And last year
he hit 4 HRs.  Booo.

Maybe people would come to boo him...

by StewFan on Nov 14, 2005 1:49 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Oops.
read the sheet too quickly.  He hit 15 last year (I read his rookie year (Eediot).

Answer doesn't change, though.

No way
I don't see icicles in hell yet

I'd rather have Reggie Jackson, Jose Canseco,  Maek McGwire, Geraldo Rivera, or Krusty the Clown.  Each of them would be more productive.  Sosa's finished.  Plus, he's a clubhouse cancer.

Hard work never hurt anyone, but I'm not taking any chances.

MIght as well go after Rickey instead
Sosa's done. No roids + no cork = no power.

Going after Sosa might make sense
if all you offer is a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training.  Otherwise, you're overpaying.

He's definitely worth a ST invite
and a minor league contract.  What do we have to lose?

by RunRickeyRun on Nov 14, 2005 9:01 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

A minor league spot
to an aging former steroid abuser.

I wouldn't even pay to see Sosa in Vancouver.

Here's the thing: if he came to Oakland and hit bulk homeruns, I'd feel dirty cheering for the A's. And if he came to Oakland and hit nothing, it'd be a waste of money.

Lose/lose situation.

Bring back Rickey. Let Sosa rot.

According to Rosenthal
Sosa is getting no interest in FA and will likely be forced to accept a minor league deal with a ST invite.

by grover on Nov 14, 2005 9:48 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'll go with that
A minor league contract with an invitation to spring training... he can earn a slot on the roster that way if he is interested.

Why don't people realize
That this guy is not only done as a player, but a clubhouse cancer, a jerk, a steriod user, and a liar.

Just because we value the undervalued, doesn't mean we have to pick up crappy over the hill players with no discernable value.

AAA contract maybe
If he wants to spend half the season in AAA proving he's not washed up, it's worth a shot. Otherwise, no.

I would not take him for free.
He is a complete selfish malcontent.  God No.
Bring back Hammer.

$2.5 million? Talk about bidding against yourself!
Here's a link to a story that suggests a much less expensive offer is in store for Sosa.

Not worth
the roster spot at any price. However, the minor league contract/ST invite might be low enough risk.

i'm feeling dizzy
I liked that lovable band of losers known as the cubs a lot when I was a kid but had to slowly cut them off in parallel to the Chicago general public's infatuation with Slamming Sammy.  I would only want him if we can sign him to a minor league contract so that I can personally be there to watch him whither away in Sacramento, with no hope of making the big club.  Well thats a little harsh but seriously, if there ever was an ungrateful clubhouse cancer, with a poor work ethic it is Sosa.  If I'm Billy Beane I somehow orchestrate a deal that would send Sammy and his oil tanker sized ego and cargo load of emotional baggage over to Anaheim.  Also, as a player, he's finished, so an aquisition of Sosa doesn't even make sense in terms of getting a bat.  I predict Keith Ginter puts up better numbers in 2006.

ah, the weekly sosa question:
no, no and no. and for next's week "...whadda think of sosa..." question-no.

It's been a while, but...
how about bringing Rickey back???  You knew I was going to say it sooner or later.

by RunRickeyRun on Nov 14, 2005 2:02 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Rickey might have more left
in his tank than Sosa.  He can still take a walk, right?
