A's Interested in Frank Thomas?

Looked back to see if there was anything on this board, found only this, which is pure speculation.

This is in Jerry Crasnik's latest column:

6. Of the following "oldies but goodies" -- Jeff Bagwell, Mike Piazza, Sammy Sosa or Frank Thomas -- which player is most likely to have a productive, bounce-back season next year?

Responses: Thomas 8, Piazza 5, Bagwell 1, one no-decision.

Thomas was wearing a walking cast and playing spectator when the White Sox swept Houston in the World Series. He became a free agent last week when Chicago declined to exercise his $10 million option for 2006.

Before going down with a broken foot in July, Thomas hit 12 homers in 105 at-bats to give teams evidence that he has something left in the tank. He compensated for a .219 batting average with a .590 slugging percentage.

"Bat speed really isn't a huge issue for him," said a National League scout. "He controls the strike zone and he's going to find ways to get on base. I don't think you're going to get the Ted Williams version of Frank Thomas, but he still can be a very productive veteran player."

While Thomas might fit as a DH in Anaheim or Baltimore -- or even re-sign with Chicago -- his most intriguing suitor could be Oakland. Thomas lives in Arizona and apparently likes the thought of playing for a West Coast club. He's looks like the kind of bold move that Billy Beane enjoys making to shake things up a little.

Now I have heard absolutely nothing about this so it might be pure speculation on Crasnik's part, but he refers to Oakland as one of Thomas' "suitors," indicating that there might actually be something to it (however small).

My gut feeling is that he'll resign with Chicago, but you got to think that if the guy's already guaranteed a $3.5 million buy-out next year, he'll probably be willing to take less from another team.

Thoughts?

I'm not worried about his bat
I just don't think he can get on the field. Injuries make him a risky buy at any price over $1 million, and that's only if you can get him insured.

I've read that if his ankle looks healed
then the White Sox will try to re-sign him.

he has been injured for the last 6 or 7 seasons
would we wanna take that risk?

I am not sahying go get Thomas, but your
assertion of his injuries is not true.  He has been injured the last 2 years, the previous 2 he played in at least 148 games. 01, 04, and 05 were his injury years, other than that he has played in over 100 games his whole career

So what you're really saying is...
..he's been injured pretty much for the last two years.

Or: He hasn't been really productive since 2003.

Anyone have Cecil Fielder's phone number?

I've been saying for about a month
the a's will target bradley out of LA and look at signing thomas at DH. It's good to see some of the National Sports Writers begin to think along the same lines...or is it?

Frank Thomas
at 90%, would be an incredible addition to our lineup. Plus: he wouldn't want to play the field--and take away PT from DJ.  Plus: he absolutely kills LHP:  1.090 OPS 3 yr. avg.  Plus: 1.174 OPS at McAfee.  Plus: Clutch .989 OPS with runners in scoring position.  Plus: cheap because of injury history. Minus: the Thomas surname.

I like it
It's probably gonna come down to money, and whether he would accept a mostly performance (games played) based contract, which is what BB would probably offer, were he so inclined.

Big Hurt
How apt...

Can anyone reassure me that Thomas can stay healthy all season? 'Cause really, what's the point of signing a guy who isn't going to leave the trainer's room.

by grover on Nov 14, 2005 5:17 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I don't care if he can stay healthy all year
Thomas is low-risk, high-reward, if his contract is reasonable. I would consider as high a salary as $4-5 mil for one year The logic is that if he gets hurt, yeah, he costs you some money, but the A's have enough financial flexibility in 2006 that it wouldn't hurt that much. Also, if he gets hurt, then you have anybody from Barton to Ethier to Kielty who could probably fill in.

Now, if he doesn't get hurt, you have the legit right-handed power bat that we've needed since Jermaine Dye broke his leg. I say that's worth the gamble.

by jmoney on Nov 14, 2005 5:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

My problem with that logic
If you're willing to spend $5 million on Thomas why not spend $7-8 million on someone you can count on?

If it's $4 million over two years with
incentives doubling that for reaching and exceeding his 3 year averages in doubles (18), hRs (24), and At Bats (300) Frank becomes interesting.

Frank is a gamble for sure even as a parttime DH and pinch hitter so the base salary has to be low. At the same time I can't help thinking this veteran's presence on our young A's roster is the right type of role-player to have around. A guy like Frank can add a lot of confidence to the A's lineup. And confidence is what all good hitters have, it is the common denominator. Frank's health keeps him part time and part time confidence isn't enough for 2006.

I see Frank as bench, playing as available and someone to keep healthy going into the post season. Frank is not a full time anything anymore but the temptation is there for the A's to fool themselves into thinking Frank IS the answer.

As unsavory as AN may find it the A's really need bench and DH. A minimum acquisition of two power hitters. The real need is still crying for an EVERYDAY veteran bat such as Huff that can play in the field when strategically acceptable. That need does not go away by acquiring Frank but is complimented in big fashion by adding him to the roster. (I guess Ginter has to go guys).

Of course the A's really don't need to add either or any power at all. We can go as is and enjoy Arte's Anaheims losing to someone new in the first round of the 2006 playoffs (that the A's probably could have beaten).

It's a simple question of A's priorities.

I know...

Instead of Frank let's play Ginter three months instead. As soon as he flashes a couple doubles and home runs we'll trade him for peak value!
Maybe get a $1.5 million veteran we can spin off or maybe even a career AAA player!
Wowie!
What a season that would be!

I guess we should trade Harden then, right?

by carp on Nov 14, 2005 6:47 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Poor comparison
Harden is younger so he has a better chance to recover from his injuries. He only has to make 35 appearances vs 162 over the course of the season. He's scheduled to make $1 million next year vs how many millions to get Thomas. Harden is already on the roster and his salary is already factored into the budget.

But yeah, if Harden can't hold up the A's should trade him.

I know the salary comparisons (of course)
and the positions they play, but this team needs TO TAKE A CHANCE ON SOMEONE, otherwise the status quo is just not getting it done over a full season.

If this mandates Zito being traded, so be it.

Why not
Of course its not the obvious or preffered choice to obtaining more power but if the price is right, why not.  The A's have to be creative in finding power because power bats are expensive.

He can still hit, I dont think anyone here questions that.

I also like adding another veteran player to the clubhouse.  Thomas seems like a class act despite any negativity around his injuries and I think the young guys might even feed off of playing with a superstar player that they grew up watching.

So sure I would expect him to get hurt at some point, but sometimes you gotta take a risk.  As others said it will all come down to dollars.

Frank Thomas is a Beastmaster
A friggin lumberjack. Worth a gamble. If BB says this team is on track, anything Frank Thomas doesn't do isn't going to fold the house.
How much? Done. Let's get this party started.
