Harden preparing for shoulder surgery

I don't think this has been posted yet, but it looks like our young stud will undergo the knife this week:

"Athletics pitcher Rich Harden will have surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder this week. Harden's shoulder, which has slipped out of place several times, is so loose that there is concern it altered his throwing motion this season, perhaps contributing to the oblique and lat strains that sidelined the A's top starter for more than two months, combined."

He should be ready to go by Spring Training, but it's still a concern... all the more reason to sign Z to a new deal.

I had the same surgery on my left shoulder....
Not fun, but with heavy rehab, he should be ready to go by ST.

It's not his throwing shoulder
So it's not as bad as it sounds

by gdubb925 on Oct 4, 2005 6:39 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
But it's still surgery.

but if this helps balance him out
and the lat and oblique problems go away, then it's all good in my book

I think this is from the time...
...he dislocated his shoulder waking up, if I recall correctly.

Really? You think I'd remember such things.
But I DO have a really bad memory, so maybe I shouldn't be so surprised. That just sounds crazy to me! I knew his shoulder had been a problem, but that sounds weird. I hope his surgery and recovery go smoothly. I thought I had a lot of injuries. :\

Yeah,
He did it reaching for his alarm clock.  Think about that next time before you so callously reach for the snooze... ;)

by As Man on Oct 4, 2005 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow...
That's special. I suddenly feel less injury prone. Reaching for an alarm clock? Yikes. :X

Yeah, I think 2 people
injured themselves turning off alarm clocks that yr.  Maybe I'm just misremembering, but at least Harden did it.  I guess the injury is better than Barmes's at least.

Yeah, he paritally dislocated it while
reaching for his alarm clock in ST.  I think he kind of did it again during the regular season against the Giants.  He tripped while covering first base and left the game.  I think he missed one start because of that.  But it wasn't a big deal.

When it's written like that
he sounds like such a clutz. :) Thanks for the info! Appreciate it. I can't even remember what I ate yesterday, much less previous year(s) injuries.

Yeah.
I remember that game. :-( It was bad.

It actually happened three times -- the Chronicle reported at the time that it also happened while he was at AAA for the first month last season.

Dotel made his A's debut in that game
He got out of a bases loade, 1 out jam in the 8th and blew a four run lead in the 9th.  AJ hit a 3 run HR.  Dotel pitched the 10th to get the W.  Guess who had the GW hit?

i remember that game
i was at my buddy's house and we were thrilled to get Dotel as he just shut down the other team in the 8th and then blew it in the 9th.  We looked at each other and just couldn't believe it, and I guess it was a sign of things to come.

if dotel had a 3 run lead in the 9th, he'd give up at least 2 runs to make it "interesting" again, whereas Street just shuts guys down.

Dotel's injury was seriously the best thing to happen to the A's all year.

Ahh yes, that game
I got real jacked about our new savior, Dotel (Dock Ock - exciting) and then that blown lead came and I was the epitome of mixed emotions but thought that was just a fluke.  hah.

Gahhh.
The horrible memories! I needed therapy after that game. :-( ...I was there with a Giants fan. Which made it so much worse.

and Sosa's
when he injured himself from sneezing. Dont forget Menechino from walking up the dugout steps.

I laughed at Sosa for that
Then about a week later I sneezed and my back was killing me for about a week, no joke.

Another weird "injury"...
NBA player Drew Gooden (then of the Orlando Magic) missed a game against the Kings last year because of infected hair follicles in his leg.  I'm not making it up.

"Why?"
"Oh, it's the hair follicles again."
"What?!"
"Hair follicles."

heh heh.
Red Sox rookie Clarence Blethen thought he looked older and meaner if he took his false teeth out when he pitched. He forgot to put them back in his mouth when he was batting. While sliding into second base to break up a double play, his own teeth bit himself in the butt.

Took me a while to understand that one. Must have been painful.

funny, but(t)....
there are 2 problems with this story:
  1. Clarence "Climax" Blethen pitched for the Red Sox back in 1923, and only batted 6 times, not reaching base at all.
  2. What 29-year old has false teeth, even back in 1923??
Ok, sorry I am a buzzkill, it's still a funny story.  And let's be real: Only a Red Sock would be dumb enough to do that.

My favorite...
Outfielder Vince Coleman missed the entire 1985 World Series after being rolled up in the tarp machine at Busch Stadium.

It begs the question...did they leave him in there all season?? ;)

Add a new one....
Apparently Jake Peavy pitched for the Padres today with at least one, and possibly two, broken ribs.

His teammates were unaware of this.

How did he break his ribs?

By jumping up and down in the 25 man crush of humanity last week as the Padres celebrated winning the NL West with their awe-inspiring 82-80 record. ;-)
