WHO'S THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE 2005 A'S?

Hudson's gone; I think he wore that mantle well, especially last year after Miggy left.

So: Chavez? Zito? Who? (Kendall maybe?)

I'm looking for the heart of this team. I see a lot of potential; but a team is more than a collection of individuals. It also needs to be more than a collection of rookies (average age of the starting rotation= 24?)if it intends to compete.

I'm not a damn Giants fan; you know they're going to haul in some gimpy free agents that will sputter out in the stretch. I like the fact that we mainly rely on home-grown talent.

I just want to know where the leadership is going to be on this team, this year, as our veterans continue to depart.

It cant be Chavvy
he was not insprinational like Kotsay was and was like Macha was scared he would be thrown out of the game.

who cares?
I wish we didn't have to do this stupid subject line anyway, but I guess there's nothing Blez can do about it.

Don't think Kendall
I don't think it could be Kendall, coming to a new team and all, but he could surprise me.

The popular pick is probably Kotsay, but I'm going to go with Crosby or Swisher. One of them is going to have to step it up big. Like it or not, for us to have success in the future it's going to have to be on their shoulders.

Then again, Harden has some fire in him. Could be the next Hudson. We will see.

by RichardP on Jan 10, 2005 10:16 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Well
Kotsay represented a lot of our heart last year, IMO, and it was his first year with the organization.

I'll go with...
Crosby or Harden.

Didn't Harden destroy a clubhouse bathroom in anger once? Thats the attitude we need.

Pfft
I don't care who the "heart and soul" is.

As long as Billy Beane's the brain, I'll keep watching.

Byrnes
As much as I admit Byrnes is not a spectacular player, he's slowly evolved into the "heart and soul" of the team in the fans' eyes. I don't know whether he has that much influence in the clubhouse, but then again neither did Miggy (Huddy was the real clubhouse leader). So I'm going with Byrnes as the "Fans' Heart and Soul".

As for clubhouse leader, I would think it's now between Kotsay and Hatteberg.

by OaktownTribesman on Jan 11, 2005 6:38 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I agree...
Along with all this "trade Byrnes" talk, it may seem strange, but he is leadership material. His recent stints on KNBR and BDSS gave a great look into the man's psyche, and some of the things I saw in him were pride, loyalty, integrity. Now sure, he's a Californian, and most of us from the Golden state are a little laid back that way, but Byrnes struck me as a man with leadership qualities.

There is no rule that says your "team leader" has to be your best player, and losing Byrnes would be a big mistake for the A's.

nicely said force :)
Byrnes is the biggest fan attracter we have. Girls love him, guys wanna have a lot of wat he has and he's absolutely adorable. He seems like an awesome guy and he's been invited to be on "The Best Damn Sports Show Period." thats cool right there. I remember staying up till one in the morning to watch byrnes on the show because he made me laugh. He's not a typical dumb blonde :)

PS: another reason I watched the best damn sports show period till one was because Barry Zito was supposed to be on one day during the week Byrnes was on. I went into the garage every school night (i'm not allowed to be up past 11), snuck down the stairs and sat myself down on the freezing cement while it was pouring outside for two hours to watch Byrnsie and wait 4 Zito. Finally, on Wed. of that week, I see before the commercials, BZ's gorgeous being "Up Next." ahhhh that made my week. Tight brown pants, band tee and hair that looked like he hadn't combed it for days with a hat on top. SOOOOO hot.... Byrnes deserves to stay. He's proved himself enough.

My best friend- "I can't wait to go to A's games again! then i can be like...look at Crosby's buns... i mean... look at crosby run!"

Remember the BB interview with AN
Blez:  Or the cries of disrupting "clubhouse chemistry" which was big thing when it came to dealing Lo Duca.

BB:  When people comment on chemistry, it's usually people who've never been in a clubhouse.  And I don't mean that in a negative sense.  It's like me commenting on the drinking water in Mongolia.  I've never drunk the water in Mongolia, therefore I don't know.  It may be good, it may be bad, but I have no right to an opinion.  Things like that, subjective things, things you can't measure are all subject to people's opinion.  And the farther out you go, the more off it is.  When it comes to chemistry, I've got a promise for you.  If you win, you have good chemistry, if you lose, you've got bad chemistry.  That's the bottom line.  There's no one who can evaluate a guy who can say, "That's a chemistry guy."

Blez:  You've got to measure tangibles.

BB:  Yes, you <u>can </u&gtmeasure tangibles.  Tangibles you can rely on.  Intangibles are all over the map.  Not to name names, but I've seen guys who people thought were the worst clubhouse guys come to our clubhouse and they were unbelievable.  I've seen guys who people perceive as great team leaders who didn't say a word and yet the published perception through the media was, "This guy's a veteran, he must be great."  Maybe he didn't say a word.  One guy who the perception was not favorable about was David Justice.  He was probably the best veteran we've ever had in our clubhouse.  Unbelievable.  He was worth every dime we paid him.  But I was worried with him coming over to the small stage, a guy who had been in New York.  He was unbelievable and everything you would want.  I was concerned because of him coming to a small market club.  There's been other guys that people thought were team leaders that were not at all.  That was the perception.  They had nothing to do with chemistry on the team.  They hung out with no one on the team and weren't particularly close to anybody.  But the perception was, this guy was awesome, they have to keep this guy he's the team leader.  And you were kind of going, "No, he's not.  If you were in here, you'd know it and you would know the difference."

Why are you guys knocking Chavy?
Because he isn't the loudest guy in the lockerroom?

He's a professional, who excels at what he does and has a bright future.  Give me a quiet, talented player, with a shelf full of gold gloves and a hitting resume that grows each year any day.

I think it's because
they don't see him as "Bonds Scary" or "Vlad Scary". But you're right - he's only just started. He was the one BB wanted to keep - for a reason.
The triple of Jeremy Brown's imagination was, in reality, a home run.

Yabu
If 36-year-old Japanese righty doesnt loosely translate to "heart and soul," I don't know what does.

I think it's the Bad Sax Player on the BART bridge
Let's hear the Flinstones theme again! Man, I hope BB never trades that guy!

Or take me out to the ballgame
It might also be the bootleg A's hat vendors.

It used to be the Red Rope Man
But I haven't seen him since 2000.

It's Roy Steele!!!!!
The one constant through all these years.

by kaweahkaweah on Jan 11, 2005 2:38 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Damn, you're right!
I felt really lost when they had a replacement stadium announcer for a few games last season. I like how Roy has been getting a little weirder in recent years...

My vote goes with
Jason (whoops, gone); ok, Miggy (whoops, gone); ok, then Huddy (whoops).  Ok, then...it's either Byrnsie or Hatteberg (whaddya mean they're both on the block?)

Let's face it - we don't keep the clubhouse leaders - at least, not because they're clubhouse leaders.  We keep players that make sense from a performance/budget standpoint.  New leaders will  emerge from those who remain.
