WHO'S THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE 2005 A'S?
Hudson's gone; I think he wore that mantle well, especially last year after Miggy left.
So: Chavez? Zito? Who? (Kendall maybe?)
I'm looking for the heart of this team. I see a lot of potential; but a team is more than a collection of individuals. It also needs to be more than a collection of rookies (average age of the starting rotation= 24?)if it intends to compete.
I'm not a damn Giants fan; you know they're going to haul in some gimpy free agents that will sputter out in the stretch. I like the fact that we mainly rely on home-grown talent.
I just want to know where the leadership is going to be on this team, this year, as our veterans continue to depart.

Don't think Kendall
The popular pick is probably Kotsay, but I'm going to go with Crosby or Swisher. One of them is going to have to step it up big. Like it or not, for us to have success in the future it's going to have to be on their shoulders.
Then again, Harden has some fire in him. Could be the next Hudson. We will see.

I'll go with...
Didn't Harden destroy a clubhouse bathroom in anger once? Thats the attitude we need.

Byrnes
As for clubhouse leader, I would think it's now between Kotsay and Hatteberg.

I agree...
There is no rule that says your "team leader" has to be your best player, and losing Byrnes would be a big mistake for the A's.

nicely said force :)
PS: another reason I watched the best damn sports show period till one was because Barry Zito was supposed to be on one day during the week Byrnes was on. I went into the garage every school night (i'm not allowed to be up past 11), snuck down the stairs and sat myself down on the freezing cement while it was pouring outside for two hours to watch Byrnsie and wait 4 Zito. Finally, on Wed. of that week, I see before the commercials, BZ's gorgeous being "Up Next." ahhhh that made my week. Tight brown pants, band tee and hair that looked like he hadn't combed it for days with a hat on top. SOOOOO hot.... Byrnes deserves to stay. He's proved himself enough.

Remember the BB interview with AN
BB: When people comment on chemistry, it's usually people who've never been in a clubhouse. And I don't mean that in a negative sense. It's like me commenting on the drinking water in Mongolia. I've never drunk the water in Mongolia, therefore I don't know. It may be good, it may be bad, but I have no right to an opinion. Things like that, subjective things, things you can't measure are all subject to people's opinion. And the farther out you go, the more off it is. When it comes to chemistry, I've got a promise for you. If you win, you have good chemistry, if you lose, you've got bad chemistry. That's the bottom line. There's no one who can evaluate a guy who can say, "That's a chemistry guy."
Blez: You've got to measure tangibles.
BB: Yes, you can measure tangibles. Tangibles you can rely on. Intangibles are all over the map. Not to name names, but I've seen guys who people thought were the worst clubhouse guys come to our clubhouse and they were unbelievable. I've seen guys who people perceive as great team leaders who didn't say a word and yet the published perception through the media was, "This guy's a veteran, he must be great." Maybe he didn't say a word. One guy who the perception was not favorable about was David Justice. He was probably the best veteran we've ever had in our clubhouse. Unbelievable. He was worth every dime we paid him. But I was worried with him coming over to the small stage, a guy who had been in New York. He was unbelievable and everything you would want. I was concerned because of him coming to a small market club. There's been other guys that people thought were team leaders that were not at all. That was the perception. They had nothing to do with chemistry on the team. They hung out with no one on the team and weren't particularly close to anybody. But the perception was, this guy was awesome, they have to keep this guy he's the team leader. And you were kind of going, "No, he's not. If you were in here, you'd know it and you would know the difference."

Why are you guys knocking Chavy?
He's a professional, who excels at what he does and has a bright future. Give me a quiet, talented player, with a shelf full of gold gloves and a hitting resume that grows each year any day.

My vote goes with
Let's face it - we don't keep the clubhouse leaders - at least, not because they're clubhouse leaders. We keep players that make sense from a performance/budget standpoint. New leaders will emerge from those who remain.
