Mano a Mano

Well, it's down to this.  Three games, winner of the series gets the reward of facing the Red Sox or Yankees in the first round of the playoffs.

If I told you at the beginning of the season that The Big Three would have a chance to lock up a playoff spot in the final weekend of the season, would you take it?

I know I would've.  Yes, the pitchers have struggled, but remember these are the horses that have taken us there before.

And the Angels pitchers will be going on three days rest...each.

If the A's offense can score some freaking runs, our boys could still be playing next week.

That's All We Can Ask For
This is up for grabs now. I like the A's chances if they can get to the Angels starters. Let's Go Oakland!!

by RudiFan on Sep 30, 2004 3:43 PM PDT reply actions

Scoiscia's gamble and today's surprise
It isn't paying off so far.  Escobar pitched well Tuesday, and he only threw 80 pitches.  But Washburn (Sunday's starter) and Lackey both were knocked around and out early.

I mentioned last night that we had a couple of advantages: home field, and Scoscia's four-man rotation.

The offense was still lousy today.  We just managed to get the right kind of hits (run-scoring double, homer, homer).

I was a little surprised by Durazo's absense from the lineup.  Did he have bad numbers against Franklin?

Much credit to today's pitchers.  Redman came through when none of us thought he would.  Rincon threw two shutout innings.  Bradford and Dotel were both fine.  They deserve the credit for today's win, along with Bobby Crosby.

It's a good thing Crosby can't bunt.

Today was an unexpected and heartening boost all around.  Anaheim lost when the Rangers were playing several light-hitting scrubs and had R.A. Dickey as a closer.  We won on a day when Redman pitched at home and we got a grand total of five hits.

Mulder still shouldn't be starting tomorrow.  But if Redman can surprise me, maybe Mark can too.

Tomorrow's game is the most important
The A's win it, and then the Angels perhaps grip their bats a little tighter and become more aggressive which could help Z on Saturday.

The A's lose and the opposite happens.

It'll be interesting to see how Colon pitches on three days rest.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Sep 30, 2004 3:45 PM PDT reply actions

MORE aggressive?!?
Blez, you're absolutely right, but if the Angels hitters got any more aggressive, they'd all be coming to the plate with 2-strike "handicap" counts.

Can you imagine Bad Vlad even more aggressive than he already is? Scary.

by monkeyball on Sep 30, 2004 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Speaking of Vlad
He is absolutely the hottest hitter in the league right now.  Question is, do the A's intentionally walk him in any situation where he represents the go-ahead run (as we all know, there is no such thing as pitching around him)?  Otherwise one figures he is probably due for at least two home runs in this series, the way he is going.

My lucky Miguel jersey worked!
I got home from work totally unaware of what the score was, went straight to my closet and put on my lucky Tejada jersey...THEN turned on the t.v. It was the top of the 9th. with one out. Dotel took care of it and then you know the rest.
During the Baltimore series when Miggy said, "Those guys don't need me any more, they got a great one." and that he watched and pulled for his old team, I knew his jersey would be good luck for Crosby.
I ain't EVER taking this son of a bitch off till we WIN it all.

after attending yesterday's loss i was feeling physically sick.  seeing the angels down in the ninth when we had the lead....then the angels won and we lost to fall a game behind - i could hardly take it.  but to the degree in which i was down yesterday, i'm at the same degree just joyously happy.  considering how Redman was able to pitch so well at home today, i'm all but expecting a Cy performance from our other starting Mark.  i think it's time for Mulder to get his groove back for the post season.  hell, the post season has already started....this series against the angels determines if we advance the next round.
i'll be at all 3 games this weekend in my green and gold, blowing my horn in support!

in fact, if they make the playoffs, somebody needs to brainwash these guys into thinking it's still the regular season...
somebody needs to sneak into their houses and change all the calendars to "august"

by xbhaskarx on Sep 30, 2004 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions

The Big Three
Mulder, Zito & Hudson should be able to take 2 of 3 from the Halos.  The momentum has clearly shifted and AN will have large energized fans half way to Mount Davis for these games.

We can't underestimate the power of the fans in the ballpark.  The Big Three will pitch in top form under this spotlight, especially Zito. They should play well to the packed ballpark and Crosby's walk-off homer is a preview of a resurgent offence.

The A's also can turn to Harden in late innings if needed this weekend.

(Thanks for this great site Blez.)

Washington Senators
The Yankees broadcasters just said on YES that the rumor going around baseball is that the Orioles are getting a $100 million payoff from MLB to accept the move of the Expos to Washington. "Is this a great country or what?" Jim Kaat added.

That's good news for the A's staying in Oakland, I think; Schott and Hoffman can squeeze a nickel tighter than anyone, and I'm pretty sure they're not going to give Peter Magowan two billion nickels to let the A's move to San Jose.

by jrbh on Sep 30, 2004 4:41 PM PDT reply actions

Chump change
Attendance up by M people per game
81 home games per year
Ticket prices probable also going up.

81 * M * AveragePricePerSeat ... I bet that $100 million ends up in MLB's coffers in pretty short order.

... and that doesn't include the increased revenue from broadcasting in a better market.

by sfodoug on Sep 30, 2004 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Now There's Something We Can Agree On....
Exactly. Anyone who thinks this truly opens up the possibility of a San Jose move is, saly, dreaming.

There won't be any payouts under current ownership. I don't see anything wrong with a new stadium in the Coliseum parking lot.

It would be even better if they could somehow point it towrd the Oakland Hills, like the Coliseum used to be before "they" came back.

by LongGone on Sep 30, 2004 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree...
If the A's move to San Jose, the value of the franchise will go up by at least $100 M.  Why wouldn't they want to increase the value of the franchise for a measly $100 M.

The D.C. could lead to a San Jose deal.

Bottom Line:  The City of Oakland does not deserve the A's

Let's Go Oak-Land!

Playoff Match-up
IF the A's make the playoffs, they could steal the second seed from the Twins. The A's beat the Twinkies five of seven times during the season, and right now, it looks like there's a decent chance that the AL West winner will be tied with the Twins for the #2 seed and go to the head-to-head tiebreakers.

(If the Twins beat the Yanks tonight, they're a game ahead of Anaheim and Oakland; if they lose, it's a three way tie.)

by jrbh on Sep 30, 2004 4:47 PM PDT reply actions

would we even want the 2-seed?
If we get the #2 seed, we'd have to play the Red Sox.  If we get the #3, we play the Yankees.  Right now I'd rather take my chances with the Yanks.

Not that we're getting ahead of ourselves here or anything.

by bigthree17 on Sep 30, 2004 5:02 PM PDT up reply actions

The Twins
Jeff, I have kept an eye on the Twins - if for no other reason than I've got tickets to the hypothetical second playoff game (Wednesday if against Boston; Saturday if against the Yankees).

But it's all hypothetical.  I don't know what the Twins will do this weekend.  More importantly, I don't know if we will even care, depending on the outcome of this weekend's games.

As for the preferred opponent, I don't know.  I'm not particularly eager to play either one of them.

by bear88 on Oct 1, 2004 12:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Looks like AL West winner will play Boston
Not necessarily something you want, but this is how the cards are dealt. Twins, Angels and A's have identical record (at 90 wins). The winner of AL West will have at least 92 wins. Twins has a losing record against both A's and Angels. So Twins will have to sweep the series against Cleveland so that it could have a chance of being the #2 seed (after #1 Yankees). It could happen but does not look very likely (Twins split 2-2 at Cleveland recently).

Twins were swept by Yankees while A's and Angels were swept by Sox.  Twins-Sox and AL West-Yankees match up should be more interesting.

Please go Twins!

Not to get ahead of myself, go A's!

If we win this weekend, it'll be one of the greatest clinches to watch. I mean, at least this is a situation where the team has it in their own hands to win or lose -- and they had BETTER win! It seems like this is what baseball is all about, the last weekend being the showdown of the year. All of California is gonna have one crazy, crazy weekend, between our games and the Giants/Dodgers series.

My friend text messaged me that they had won,  I almost jumped up and screamed!!

This is really great... I am soooooooo proud of Crosby, as I have been all season.

BTW, as a funny note, someone actually tried convincing me that Bubba Crosby (of the Yanks) was as good as, or even better than, our Bobby!! ~I chose to ignore them!!

I agree with everyone that wants Bobby as Rookie of the Year... there's no question about it!!

Feel much better now.

As for this game, great job by Redman.  For some reason I was very optimistic about him starting a day home game ;)
Crosby came up BIG!  Now if the rest of the A's bats can find life.  It was painful watching the A's make Franklin look like Cy Young.

Scared to see the attendance figures this weekend
I'm not sure what scares me more - the thought of only 20-25,000 at the Coliseum this weekend, or having to listen to all the talk radio boneheads talking about the A's horrible attendance all next week.

(Which, historically, isn't bad at all. It's sad that some very important baseball people seem to have short term memories. Can you imagine what it would be like if the A's drew 336,000 like they did for the entire 1979 season?!?)

Here's hoping they draw at least 35,000+ for the last three games.

Could anything be sweeter? Oh, wait! What's that? Bobby Crosby, the coolest rookie the A's have ever had in my 27 left coast years, struck the winning blow. Oh, man! And he says that he didn'let himself go up thinking about a home run or anything. But he admitted to thinking in the eighth how cool it would be to hit a walk off and win the game. Idunno...
...what to think anymore.

I've spoke many times on this blog throughout this season how the A's seemed to lack that "Magic" that has been such a big part of the previous 4 years.

But today, against all probability and recent history, when the forces of evil had amassed to thier most wicked endeavor and the flame had done all but it's final fatal flicker, the young Padawan who has become known as "Croz" transformed the Coliseum back once again into that wonderous cataclysm of kharma we all know and love with one mighty swing of his sabre.

The stage has now been finally set for the most magical moment of all, and the script could not have been written any better by George Lucas than it has now been done by the baseball gods themselves.

May the Force be with us all...go A's.
