Dan Patrick reporting Huddy Traded

He's reportedly close to being shipped to St. Louis, though I'm not sure who is involved. I've yet to find any Internet sources on this - just that Dan Patrick said on ESPN radio that it's "close."

Are you kidding me
IF this is true, we better be getting some hitting. If its Dan Haren, Kiko Calero, and their best young hitter whos in triple A, then this is not so bad. I still would have preferred Giles, but i mean i guess not...

No Top 50
The cardinals do not have a single offensive prospect in the top fifty. (1 pitcher Wainwright)

The only names I've heard are pitchers
Marquis, Suppan, and/or Haren.

The rumor
Hudson to STL, Giles to OAK, Haren & Suppan to ATL. That's the rumor on the internet boards, anyway (MLB's & ESPN's). But this makes no sense, in that the meetings haven't really even started yet, and Pedro & Pavano haven't signed yet. Once those 2 are gone, our market is much more clear & defined, and teams will be bidding against each other for Hudson only. Does not sound like Beane at all to make a deal right away, without leveraging clubs against one another by waiting, even if only for a few days. So, I for one don't believe this one.

by sign arenas on Dec 9, 2004 12:46 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Forgot to mention
Why wouldn't ATL just deal Giles for Hudson and keep him for themselves? Just doesn't make any sense.

by sign arenas on Dec 9, 2004 12:47 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

if it's the equivalent of Giles for Huddy
Beane could have done it already.

and Giles is not enough. the a's would need starting pitching also.

by OaklandSi on Dec 9, 2004 5:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If thats the case
I think we may as well try and steal Kiko Calero from the cards....

If Jocketty can get this done
He is a hero in St Louis, even more so than he is now. They have got to be the national league favorites for the NLCS title this year. And the thing is, this is close to Huddys home. They made the WS. I think he extends with them. I think part of this must have been the fact that BB wanted to give Huddy a good place to go..

Giles is legit
And I'll be excited to get him, but we need something else in addition to him in exchange for Huddy.

by Tony on Dec 9, 2004 12:48 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

When is Giles a free agent
When is Giles a free agent? Will Oakland lose him after the 2005 season to free agency?

I like the extra bat in the A's line up but I have to admit I kinda liked the deal Hudson for Polonco and Myers. OH well we will see what happens.

by CDN Athletics Fan on Dec 9, 2004 12:51 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

The A's would have Giles' rights
through the '07 season.  Also, we couldn't have traded for Polanco.  He's a free agent.

Giles Contract
Wouldn't they only have him through 2006? I'd like to see his contract.

by nhayhoe on Dec 9, 2004 1:04 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

He just finished his third year
He has no contract, he's a 4th year arbi case - we'll extend him for 3 years, 2.5, 4, 5.5.

trade makes no sense!!!
everyone wants hudson, billy'd make them all bid against each other to get the best package if he was even going to deal huddy anyway, right? this sounds like a rumor, not a legit beane move...waaay too early to make this deal.

HUDDY'S PHYSICAL DURABILITY
If BB really moves Huddy, it has to be a calculated thought that Huddy's physical problems caused because of the huge amount of torque the guy has to exert to pitch puts him at greater risk than Mulder/Zito . . .

He could be right. It will be interesting to see how long Huddy remains an ace. I could see helping STL win a championship then fading into mediocrity.

Also, could Huddy's ultimatum have been a move to spur a trade so he could get an extension set before he potentially injures himself again this year?

by Josh on Dec 9, 2004 1:01 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Huddy
How can you put Huddy and mediocre in the same sentance?  The guy has a .600 winning percentage.  He wins on determination alone some nights.  He has all of the intangables that make a great ace type pitcher, except for being a bit short.

Long live Huddy and Joe Morgan.

I believe I said . . .
"fad[e] into mediocrity."

It's right up there. You can see for yourself.

The reality is that every player is going to tail off as he gets older. Because Huddy weighs a buck-fifty, he has to push his body more than other pitchers. This could have led to his problems the past couple years and could cut his career short.

by Josh on Dec 9, 2004 1:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

but if the report comes out tomorrow and we got Dan Haren and Kiko Calero, I'm gonna be pissed.  I don't see BB doing that, but the possiblity is killing me.  Pleeeeeease tell me we didn't get two mediocre pitchers for Huddy.  Tell me there's a third team or we get half our payroll subsidized or something!  They don't have any prospects worth trading for.  Someone explain this to me, tell me its not true, or buy me a drink.

La Pinata
I love La P.  Except for the one in Hayward, the food's been getting worse and worse troughout the years and starting about 2 and a half years ago I started getting sick whenever I ate the chicken.

All the other La P's (Alameda, SL, Newark, Fremont) are awesome, food's good (but I don't know why they include burgers on the menu it's a MEXICAN place) and there a full tequila bar.

The Alameda one is clearly the best.

I have to pay people to be my friends.

by Jennifer on Dec 9, 2004 7:07 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

How much do you pay?
I'm always looking to make a couple extra bucks.

by grover on Dec 9, 2004 7:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It depends.
We have a few options.
  1. The Fall Guy/Gal (Deluxe Package) - Basically, this plan is designed to make me look good (which is a really difficult job, hence having to pay). If I stick my foot in my mouth, it is this person's job to distract everyone else. For instance, I say something stupid, the Fall Guy/Gal and I exchange hand signals, and the Fall Guy/Gal, we'll call this person Ryan, blurts out predetermined phrases. A popular choice is, "I like brownies," and "I like to wear ladies underwear on my head while singing Prince songs." I leave it up to the Fall Guy/Gal, though. The pay is based on the responses given and how I feel after. We have a smiley face poster like hospitals to measure my emotional pain. Pay is determined accordingly.
  2. The basic package. This one is a simple plan to make me feel good. The "friend" and I shop together, go to the movies together, and play with paper dolls, for example. The "friend" is also required to send me various gifts for special occasions and phone calls are required daily. Again, the Emotional Pain Scale is used to determine pay.

by Jennifer on Dec 9, 2004 7:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

paper dolls
I'm up for that.

by Sharon on Dec 9, 2004 7:47 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm certainly qualified for the job
Ptu me in a situation were only one thing could screw up the deal and I'll say exactly the magic words. What kind of benefits do you offer and do you cover expenses? Movies ticket can add up.

by grover on Dec 9, 2004 7:55 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, all expenses are covered.
I have dental and health insurance, and the "friend" gets use of the company car. There are no holidays and the "friend" usually has to work weekends. It's tough job.

Cardinals officials are now telling TSN's Ken Rosenthal that no Tim Hudson deal is imminent.
It looks like the Orioles and maybe the Braves and Indians are still in the running. Rosenthal also mentions the Phillies, Dodgers, Red Sox, Mets and Yankees as other potential suitors for Hudson. No AL West teams are viewed as candidates because it's assumed the A's won't trade Hudson within the division.
