Brian Cashman's Resume

The Yankees just gave Tony Womack 2 years and $4mil, and they gave Jaret Wright 3 years and $23 mil.

Read that again.

The only explanation I can come up with for these ridiculous contracts is that Brian Cashman has finally had it with Steinbrenner, and he's decided to MAKE King George fire him. I wonder if he'll even show up at the press-conferences, or is he going to be in the office sprucing up his resume?

Good news, though. These are both going to end up being bad moves for the Yankees. It's going to be a while before they win another World Series.

George loves George.
even after he took the trophy around the parking lot.

but Brian is a different matter.

Baseball is a market game. This site helps create a market. Blez makes the site. Blez is helping the A's win the world series.

3 years/23 million?!
Wow...destined to be the latest high-salaried Yanks free agent pitcher that stinks up the joint and is dealt away after a year...

i wouldnt
sign tony womack to a MINOR LEAGUE contract....brian cashman should trade derrick jeter to the a's for ricardo rincon if he wants to get fired...

explanation
i mention this theory in another diary, only half-fecitiously:

maybe the Yanks have decided that by giving out huge contracts to crappy players they can drive the price for GOOD players even higher, eliminating would-be contenders for top free agents.  For example: If Wright is worth 7 mil a year, Pavano's gotta be worth a lot more.  If enough of these contracts drive the price up even higher, the Yanks will be the only team left with enough cash to sign the real blue chippers....

That's just wrong
That's a sick, demented, and unethical plan... which is why I think you're right, the Yankees would certainly go with such a plan! :)

We should encourage it ...
Why? Because there is only so much money to go around. Every team - even the Yankees - only has so much money in their budget. The sooner they hit that ceiling, signing players we could afford anyway, the sooner they get out of the market for other players, driving down the costs of the next tier of players - allowing smart GMs to find more bargains.
Relax alright don't try to strike everyone out. Strikeouts are boring besides that they're fascist. Throw some ground balls it's more democratic.
