Just a quick thought...there is a chance that Hudson, Mulder and Zito could all be opening day starters in 2005.

There goes the annual question on OaklandAthletics.com, who should be the A's opening day starter.

Then again, it could wind up being John Smoltz, Matt Morris and Rich Harden (unlikely given Zito's stature with the club as the elder statesman now, but who knows?).

I've attached a quick poll whether you think it will be Harden or Zito to throw out the first A's pitch in 2005.  This is assuming everyone is healthy and the roster remains intact, which is by no means a certainty.

The A's are *so* careful with young startes...
...that you have to think they'll go with Barry, just to avoid the pressure on Harden.

But Harden's going to be the ace next year.

I hope.

Zito a hippie?
you read too much in newspaper and media trying to sell stories. especially fox coverage

he is the most intense out of the former big 3. yeah, hudson is more intense because he grandstands more in the media. but zito is way more intense but he has the news media poking fun at his guitar playing skills, going to berkeley coffee houses, and having a pink pillow. ok, the former 2 describes college students, and the latter is the only thing that stands out in a goofy way, not hippie.

You are right Suggy
I think Zito has pitched too long in the shadows of the other two, and it has effected him, no matter what he did, he was Hudson #1, Mulder #2.
I would not be surprised to find Zito relishing his role as the ace of the staff.  I hold to my opinion that Zito will be signed long term in Oakland, always had that feeling.  He is Beane's kind of guy, and much more intense and motivated than written in the papers.  He is brushed aside by the press because of his guitar playing, but inside is a competitor.

... Carney Lansford was always my mom's favorite player--I think she just liked saying his name, "Go Carney!!"  Then she saw in the A's program we bought that day, with a little chart listing the players and their personal preferences, that the guy Carney most admired was Ronald Reagan.  She never forgave him.

That is totally uncalled for, dude.  Just remember the reason for the Season, Jesus.

Whatever happened to "Peace on Earth" or "Love thy neighbor"?  We don't seem follow those Christian values anymore.

Misfit, you've complained that us liberals have lost without any class.  It's seems that you won without class.

I'm scared of some of my fellow countrymen like you misfit.  Look at yourself in the mirror and look at all that blind beliggerent rage.  Always knee-jerk reactions without any though of the consequences.  Always the "We're right because we're Americans, Fuck the rest." attitude.

That's why the world hates us.  Why can't we be what we all claim to be, good Christians and turn the other cheek and love one another?  That what Jesus and the Bible says.  We won't because that's "gay."

One hundred years ago Great Britain was the world's dominant power.  Through external conflicts around the world the lost alot of their power and now plays second fiddle to us, the current dominant power of the world.  If we continue on this path, I wonder who we would play second fiddle to in a hundred years.

In the spirit of Christmas I forgive you and all of my other misguided countrymen, I can only hop you can do the same for me and the rest of my liberal countrymen.

I'm sorry for political rant #2 today, I try to limit myself to one rant a day.  Switching my career choice to musician (as opposed to going to law school) has been one of my better choices I've made, I don't get pissed off talking about music.

from Alyssa
Alyssa Milano described Barry Zito as "a conservative Republican" in an interview with Us magazine, after the two of them attended a Rock the Vote party together in October.  It may be that she's exaggerating.

I'm not aware of any case when Barry himself has publicly expressed his own political views. Wikipedia puts him in the "labeled by others" category. Several other baseball players appear in the "expressed support" category. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Republican_celebrities>

I think it will be Zito on Opening Day, and it should be.  That being said, was there was any discussion in here during the season about whether Barry has tried to have "too many irons in the fire" (eg. bad music, bad acting), and maybe losing the focus on baseball?  I wondered if that may have been a contributing factor to his inconsistency.

El Duque
Since this is an Open Thread, I thought I'd throw out someone we should grab - El Duque.  I was never a big fan of his, but his numbers are pretty good.  He may be 40 (rumor) years old, but he still had a 3.30 ERA last year.  And if the A's can get him for 2/$4 like the White Sox are trying to do, I'm all for it.  He would add stability to the rotation and if he's injured, we have a kid to step in.  If not, he lets Blanton or Meyer spend another 2/3 a season in AAA getting seasoning and keeping their service clock from ticking.

If people are afraid of El Duque because of injuries, I'd suggest Jose Lima Time for the same role.  Less likely to be injured, but probably will have a higher ERA.

by jubjub on Dec 22, 2004 1:26 PM PST reply actions

Jose Lima could be a spark
...of exactly the kind that A's were lacking at the end of this past season.  I was at a Royals game in KC in 2003, and could not help but notice how he came out of the dugout after every inning to high-five the guys coming off the field.  He's nuts, but mostly in a good way.

His record was solid last year:  13-5 with a 4.07 ERA, and he had a tremendous start in the post-season (a CG shutout, I believe).  He'd be a nice 4th/5th starter and veteran presence, as long as they don't ask to do any STD counseling in the community.

Zito all the way
opening day starts always = seniority. not skills, but tenure. This isn't opening day in baseball video game land, its real life. real life you have to massage egos and recognize loyalty and veterans.

besides, what insane manager would give the opening day start to Harden. Not to mention that you upset the psyche of a former Cy young winner, but you are also putting tremendous pressure on a kid who got hot at the second half. No way Billy Beane signs off on this.

And Hudson getting opening day start? yeah right. only if John Smoltz has a setback in spring training or declines.

Mulder in St. Louis? Matt Morris and his inflated contract is still there.

But of course, that would be degrading Zito. He deserves #1 for at least a season. Next season, who knows?

As for me, I love Zito. Everyone on AN knows that. I love his quirkiness and his... i don´t know... out there personality. It´s... hmm... horrible that people critizize him for having a satin pillow, collecting stuffed animals and playing at bars. That´s damn sexy if you ask me. And it also shows he´s not some stupid jock. Perfect, godsent man right there.

p.s. Alyssa Milano is one lucky b*itch. I wonder if she sold her soul to the devil? Or maybe she left it with Carl Pavano. He probably took his and Alyssa´s at the same time when he signed with the Yankees. Alyssa Milano doesn´t deserve all that gorgeousness.

I give it to Zito. Dude's a veteran, and to me, he's done his time to earn the Opening Day spot. Give him his shot to be the number 1 guy, put some faith in him on day one.

Besides, Harden's already going to be getting a huge promotion -- suddenly bumped up from 'that kid' to '#2'. The expectation and pressure on him will already be extreme, let's not put EVERYTHING on him.

I SO agree with Athletics Fan and Runner's post of not wanting to know players' political views (especially given that the average MLB player is a wealthy white male, without a college degree, from the middle of the country).

Why It's Best To Steer Clear of Politics...!
From Misfit's comments (or should I say, comment's), it seems that...

 1. If people with a vested interest in electing your opponent make unsubstantiated claims, you are a "war fraud."

 2. If you claim a link between Iraq and Al Qaeda, go to war on that premise, then change your tune when you're called on it, your opponent is a flip-flopper.

 3. The media, largely owned by ClearChannel et. al., and totally disinterested in overwhelming statistical evidence that the election was fraudulently won, is liberal.

Gosh, I can't WAIT to hear any thoughts on the A's rotation--surely 'twill be a reasoned, fact-based analysis. Whoops, can't chat: someone's trying to die with dignity in Oregon, gotta go stop them!

Baseball players are all male, mostly white, mostly suburban, mostly wealthy. That's not a demographic Democrats usually do too well in. So I try not to think of their politics too much.

Ill have just turned 18. Rudy Giuliani. I hope to god he runs in 08 and keeps this country sane. I bet a lot of people here probably hate Michael Savage, just cuz most democrats and radical liberals do. I like him though, and when i was in the US, i would listen to him all the time. Even most of the analysts admit that Kerry was just not a good candidate, and the democrats didn't have anything better. Bush has faith, and he has a belief and he's willing to stick by it. And after what happened to us on 9/11, he was couragenous to act and go to everywhere to stop these mother fucking psychos. we are in Iraq, because Bush finally decided to clean out those douches. I am personally familiar with the situation out here, because I'm Israeli. My country is full of terrorist dickfaces blowing themselves up for a "cause". Apparently their ause is to convert everyone to islam, as every ongoing conflict in the world has to do with muslims fighting with their neighbors. Bush realized that the world is a better place without these people, and it is fantastic that he still stands by that feeling. Those people do not deserve to be on the earth. While were at it, why all this stuff about being good christians? America is full of not only that but Jews and muslims (the non death loving ones).
