Boston now a frontrunner?

Eesh. This is just up and down and all over the place.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=fanball-athleticshudsoncente&prov=fanball&type=lgns

Maybe the Boston package is Youkilis and Arroyo. But where would we play Youkilis? Isn't he a 3B/OF?

I know this trade talk is tiring but I can't seem to stay away... :-P

Nothing new here
They're just guessing, and I think some of the ideas around here have more merit.

Beane likes Youkilis, but he LOVES Hudson.

youkilis
isn't worth hudson.  and anyway, billy always seems to get his people (i.e. D, Cust) when they are low-profile players.  but, this is the first i've heard of theo and co. in a rumor.

Yuk-ilis
can play DH. Hell maybe even LF considering Byrnes plays there with his wacky-I-dont-know-how-to-take angles-so-I-take-weird-ones-which-may-or-may-not-end up-in-alley-but-at-least-the-fans-cheer-when-i-get- one.

Boston
We need more than Youkilis and Arroyo for Hudson.

Boston
i heard that Hanley Ramirez was included in the package too.

Better if they threw in Man-ley Ramirez
I REALLY cannot picture Beane dealing Hudson to Boston.  NL -- likely.  A non-competitive AL team -- likely.  But to Boston, the Evil Empire Part Deux?  Why would he do that?

Kevin Youklis isn't good enough to unseat Bill Mueller at 3B, Bronson Arroyo's cornrows are a joke, and we don't need no stinking Hanleys.

Unless Boston gives us Manny and offers to cover 70% of his salary for the remainder of his contract, I'd tell Boston to go bark up Matt Clement's tree.

Well...
I think Beane would if Boston had the right talent, but they don't.  Hanley Ramirez/Youkalis and Arroyo for Hudson?  I don't think so.

Boston trade partner..
I believe the idea that the Boston would get AJ Burnett from Florida for Arroyo and then trade Burnett and Youkalis or H. Ramirez to the A's. This way the Sox get Hudson, Florida saves money and gets a #3 kind of pitcher and the A's get a cheaper starter ($4 million in Arb.) and a young player for the future. Maybe Beane spins Ramirez to the Dodgers or the Jays but that is the general idea.

Burnett is a good but sometimes injured pitcher that if he is a free agent at the end of the year gives the A's another 2 draft picks.

As for not dealing with the Sox, (or for that matter the Yanks) think of it as this. The Sox are going to get good players just by having the Money. Beane is probably thinking he can get involved in a deal with them a get better or not and maybe suffer. The Sox and the Yanks are not going to stop if the do not get Hudson they will just move on to a Johnson or Sheets. If you help to drain the Sox minors they may become a small Yanks; a team with no minors that spends for everyone.

Just a thought.

If
we were going to lose a pitcher at the end of the season (Burnett) why wouldn't we just keep Hudson.
My seatbelt is broken. What do you suggest I do?

by Diesel on Dec 14, 2004 7:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Two reasons
Reason one for deal is money, A's save about 2.5 million

Reason two the A's get a extra player in Ramirez or someone that will be here for a few years.

These are both important to Beane

2.5 M
You don't trade Hudson for Burnett to save $2.5M.  I actually like Burnett, but if we did it, we'd better be getting a lot more than just him.

Problem with that deal
Where is the pitcher that the A's can then develope into a starter for the next 5-6 years? Burnett fills the hole created by Hudson's departure but Ramirez doesn't help Oakland and the bullpen still needs to be addressed.

Deal Ramirez
If Ramirez is the second player behind Burnett then maybe he is moved to LA or Atlanta or ... for a young pitcher. Ramirez is the Sox best prospect or maybe it would be one of Boston's good AA arms.

The main point is that it gives the A's a good pitcher this year and other stuff, be it a young ss or pitcher.

I'd puke

By no I'm sort of jaded enough to accept a Hudson trade if it happens, but if Hudson is traded to the Blo Sux of all teams, I think I'm going to puke. After the 2003 ALDS it'd be like adding insult to injury. I'd rather see Barry Bonds in Green and Gold than Tim Hudson in a Sux uniform (and that's saying alot).

guys, i'm not hearing boston...

Thanks for the link
Sure, Giles doesn't have to be in the deal, just as long as the Braves are willing to give up a bunch of pitching in return.

I had read that Baltimore turned down the A's because they didn't want to include 3 pitching prospects in one deal.

Beane could be looking to stack the system with arms. Young arms can always be traded for offense.

agreed,
sounds like beane is collecting poker chips for when the time comes he can say "all in" and be the bully at the table.
