Swisher Streets

John Sickels has a mailbag on Down on the Farm, and he talks a little bit about Swisher and Street.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?id=1929139

Basically he says that Street is one of the better pitching prospects around, but he expects him to start next year in AAA. He also says that Swisher might have even more power than we have thought if he can play with a fully healthy thumb.

swisher..... :) happy feeling..... :) he's gonna have an awesome rookie season.... i see a ROY! ahh.... swish..... :)
Personal grooming has never been a strong point for the A's but Barry's unkempt appearance once prompted Beane to ask him if he combed his hair with a rock.

Swisher
Did he play too many games this year to qualify as a rookie next year?

by Tony on Nov 22, 2004 10:11 PM PST up reply actions

I think he's still eligible
He can't be on a major league roster more than 45 days (he was a September call-up so no worries there) and he can't have more than 130 ABs... I think he had something like 50-60.

Yeah
Swish has 60 ABs, checked on MLB.com

RookieS of the Year
The A's had a string of three straight A.L. Rookies of the Year in the latter part of the 1980's.  Now with Crosby '04, Swish '05 and (You fill in the name for '06!!), here's hoping we can do it again.  All of which leading to World Series' victories in the immediate future.

RE:
Equally impressive: the two ROTY winners previous to this year, Angel Berroa and Eric Hinske both came out of our farm system.  Granted, Berroa robbed Matsui because a few writers decided to impose their own thoughts on eligibility into their results, but that's impressive nonetheless.

One-hit wonders
Yes, but it's now looking more and more like Berroa and Hinske are marginal major-leaguers.

Remember, Beane does trade quality players to get quality players -- but most of the guys he gets rid of end up being the right guys to have gotten rid of.

True
Mario Ramos, Jason Hart are two names that come to mind. I think the talent of these guys is hoped for, but when they don't pan out Bean somehow keeps that impression alive for a trade. Jason Hart was supposed to be everything we lost with Giambi, and now you have to really go searching to track him down. Ramos was highly touted, and when we traded him it was like, how can you trade that guy? Short time later you see his stats and smile, Bean made a good move.  We got Ramos back, but we are not talking about him anymore as a future starter.

Thats why they are called prospects.

Cut Hart some slack
He was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He couldn't play because of surgery/treatment.

by grover on Nov 23, 2004 5:23 PM PST up reply actions

Well, maybe...
But remember, he traded away Hart and Ramos (and Laird and Ludwick) in a signature "fucking-A" trade (wherein Billy ships bucketloads of detritus in return for some pearl)...

...in return for Carlos Pena, A's First Baseman of the Future...

...of the future 2 months, as it turned out (if that).

Bottom line, none of the 5 guys involved in this trade will rock your world, although a couple can still aspire to adequacy.  This trade was not a ripoff, it winds up being not much in exchange for not much.

Oh yeah
As for Ramos, Texas ruined him. I know someone who pitches in their organization and he says what the big league pitching coach says is entirely different from what the AAA pitching coach says which is different from... etc etc etc.

And the 2006 ROY is...
Kurt "Klutch" Suzuki! :)
