Question about the comments

is it my imagination, or do the comments in a story switch from 'nested' to 'threaded' when the number of them crosses a threshold?
It's particularly strange, since there is no 'threaded' selection in the comment preferences, like in some other scoop sites.
What I would really like would be the 'dynamic threaded' option.
